I love Anime (the films and tv shows) and Manga (the comics and art) because the story telling and techniques used are just amazing. My favourite anime is Cowboy Bebop, something that continually amazes me every time I watch it. I suggest to you all that you check out that show. Other things like Ghost in the Shell (the movies and series) amaze me because they've affecte how we percieve film, life, and everything in between. I don't agree with people who don't like the stuff because of the "eyes and noses" or whatever, I think thats a superficial view, and that you shouldn't be stuck on those kind of details. It's the story that counts. And yet Rob Liefeld still sucks.

Anime is like the bikini or hip hugger jeans with visible thongs. For every good looking girl in a bikini there are 99 who should never walk out the door in one. For every nice butt cleavage and tight ab girl you have 500 muffin topped nasty beasts. For every Robotech, Ghost in the Machine, and Akira you have thousands of really aweful anime episodes. So I have to say anime sucks because the bad so outweighs the good.
I also think it is finally fading as a fad in America.

Good anime can be spectacular and innovative.
Bad anime can be like eating someone else's puke with extra horseradish.
Then again, most TV shows and movies follow the same rules.

I was a big fan of Robotech when it originally aired in the US (it can on 630AM, and I would watch it everyday before school, like a kiddie soap opera), and I just recently bought the complete epic (Macross, Masters and Invid Invasion), remastered on DVD--- and it's aged well! But I equate this series more with Thundercats, Voltron and that sort of thing than anime. I've seen Ghost in the Machine (which was excellent), but every other bit of Japanimation has gone right over my head (and the stuff on Cartoon Network is just seizure-inducing).

Not a real big fan here. Although I guess two of my favorite cartoons while growing up was Speed Racer and Kimba. (I'll give an exalt to the first person who can tell me what Kimba was) I suppose they were considered Anime at the time. But nothing since then.

well I just hate it. for more than just one reason too.
-when i was in high school, it was cool for people to walk around with stupid paper back graphic novels all packed with angst and what appeared to be very subtle forms of pedophilia, but it was considered "immature" to be reading DKR or something like that. i
-it has become SO over-saturated that every new cartoon has to at least have some form of that style in it or its not cool to the little ones who will grow up never understanding what good cartoons used to look like. have you SEEN the new fantastic four cartoon? if not you're lucky.
-every no talent jerk I know who wants to draw but can't does a very crappy body and an acceptable body and says "hey its my anime style" I can excuse stylization but when your "style" is the same as about oh... 34528956284 billion OTHER peoples, it just becomes a moot point. the whole look is cliched, boring, and obnoxious.
-the old cartoon's may be nostalgic and there maybe some "good" new movies, but really its like saying there are a few tasty morsels of corn in a truckload of crap- just not enough to convince me to try any more out by this point.

I do wanna say though that I don't hate the artists, i hate the style for the reasons above, there ARE anime pictures that I look at and like but I don't read the comics or watch entire movies. Thor's work here really makes me eat those words I said here because it is fantastic and can be considered in that style.

I like anime, and I don't think the entirety of it should be effected by the many bad ones out there. One could say the same for comics, that there has been many, many bad comics out there with bad stories, but it should effect the emdium of comics.
Anime for me is good if it's either thought provoknig (Neon Evangelion), has great animation and ideas (Ghost in the Shell came out years ago and was ahead of its time), has good action (earlier Dragon Ball Z, before the coutless episodes of monotony that followed, and Naruto), or a mixture. I'm forgeting things I like so don't judge me if I'm missing good things about it.
Some of thse animes are annoying. I mentioned how I liked Naruto, but Naruto himself annoys the hell out of me because he's always yelling. But then again, many of our animes are dubbed, so we hear the annoying english actors and not the cool, deep japanese voices that are in so many of these shows.
Overall, I think anime has good and bad to it. Many american shows try to make bad anime copies with no substance, and so I feel like our cartoons are missing the soul that I grew up with during the 90s on Saturday mornnigs and weekday mornings/afternoons. I also hate most manga because I like american comics format. But anime can be really good (some of my faves being Neon Evangelion, very thought provoking, GundamWing, cool mecha stuff, Narruto, lots of deception and action, Vampire D, so unique and gothic that it rules, Comboy Bebop, again unique that it has a jazzy nir feel to a futuristic anime setting, and Outlaw Star, cool space faring adventures, just to name a few).
Tell me your thoughts.

Anime is great. Americanime is horrible (which takes up a bulk of american cartoons today). I don't like anime just because it is anime. I like some based on there stories, which are usually deeper and aren't afaird to kill characters like in american cartoons. Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the greatest shows I have ever watched. The storylines and charatcers were great, but the animation didn't fall into that cookie cutter anime either, by that I mean you could still tell it was anime but the style was like none I had seen before. Akira was great also, and I would say that or Steamboy are probably the most well done animation I have ever seen. The artwork was extremely detailed and amazingly done. I think the last American cartoons I got into were Batman TAS and Beast Wars (the greatest show of all time).
Anime, like making cars, if best when done by the Japanese. The only complaint I have against it is sometimes they all look alike and I like to see indivisualism. Still, even if they all look alike, they still look a million times better than Spongebob or whatever cartoons America produces nowadays.

As some of you can expect I agree with the points made by the pro-anime posters 100%. Fullmetal Alchemist is wonderful and it holds the top spot in my heart. I have a habit of catching animes towards the middle or the very last ep, but this was the first that I saw from start to finish and the movie. I recommend it to ANYONE on the planet. Well...maybe not everyone, like my grandparents. Cowboy Bebop is the first anime that I ever knowingly watched. I say knowingly because I watched Speed Racer and other cartoons that I didn't know was anime until later. I watched the last episode and my jaw hit the floor. Everything was so engaging, the characters, the environment, story, even the final ending credits that slowly panned up to the night sky as one of the most moving songs I've ever heard played in the background. I love emoitonally driven animes with a good amount of depth (not too complicated) but they also need some humor. On the other hand, I don't like animes that are totally ridiculous and have no plot. That's why Fullmetal and Cowboy Bebop are so popular. They have a good mix of both. Depth is what I think most American cartoons lack today. The plot revolves around the goal of selling toys. That's what drove me away from the Batman, not the animation. BUT there is HOPE! With the intro of Robin, The Batman has gotten closer to the spirit of the comics. The episode is called "A Matter of Family", you can watch it on youtube in 3 parts: Part 1: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrpCRohwREUKevin Conroy voices Dick's Dad and we get to see more of John and Mary here than I have ever seen in any media. Another reason I love anime is the soundtracks! If you listened to one like Fullmetal or Cowboy Bebop, you would think it was done for a major motion film. Some (the good ones) are done with orchestras. The theme songs are usually done by popular japanese bands, and listening to anime opening and ending songs is what got me into J-pop and J-rock. So, that was longer than I thought....Anyway what I'm trying to say is, don't condemn all animes/mangas based on a few bad experiences. That's like saying "Comics are just for kids." And we all know that's not true.

The Cat Returns is another anime, I think by the same studio that did Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, but I wouldn't hold me to that. There was a film season on last month, and as I was ill... I watched quite a few films of the anime kind!

jrfan, i agree with you points. Couldn't have said it all any better. And I'm glad to see they have Robin/Dick, I think he essential to the Batman mythos. I was disappointed because the movie/studios don't want anything to do with Robin, and I can see their view, but I thought it'd be cool if they could make Robin cool and dark without reminding the world of the campy nature of their 1950s to 60s run. I loved the idea Jim Lee had in one of his sketchbooks to make Robin have a red hood (play on words) and pants and such, kind of a mixture of medieval tunics and traditional Robin garb.

I think we can thank Joel Schumacher for the attitude the studios have towards Robin. I'd like to see Robin(in a teen age Dick Grayson form) be brought to the big screen someday. I don't see any reason it couldn't be done well. I watched Gangs of New York and if Hollywood can make it believable that Dicaprio would ever win a fight then I don't see why Robin isn't possible.

Also, I never posted my response to my poll. I don,t like anime. There are very few exceptions to this. I like the Teen Titans cartoon that was on for awhile and I like Thor's work(but it looks more anime influenced than strait anime, correct me if that seems wrong Thor). There are aspects of different shows that I liked but I've never really sat down and watched an anime and been like wow this is freaking cool! And I've seen stuff here and there that I liked (couldnt tell you by who). It's not the lack of realism or the different styles cause I think even realistic types have their own styles. As a whole I just don't dig it. Maybe its the eighties thing. I grew up watching He-Man, Thundercats, etc. and reading DC and Marvel comics. I think Ramon and Artteach both put it very well and colorfully I might add. I am not opposed to reading something in that style if its a good story, but I just can't get into it based on the art.

That's kinda the reason I can't get into the manga. No matter how much I love the anime that could have come from a manga, I can't get into their format and art. The manga for me is largely similar to each other by look, and so I don't feel like I'm reading new work. With american work I love the uniqueness and individuality of the look. A bit superficial, but I can't help it.

I personally do not enjoy it due mainly to it's (IMO) over-exposure in main-stream media. There was a time when anime was still confined to the island of Japan, and was treasured due to its rarity. Times have changed, and since then, you can't walk down the street without seeing the stuff...

ROFL! *exalt* As for Anime/Manga, I can't paint with a broad brush. I am very selective and like bits here and there. I grew up with Star Blazers. My best friend hooked me on Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 and Gunsmith Cats. I saw Spirited Away and Princes Mononoke, but while both were good, neither one "spoke" to me.
