Fantastic second issue. Jonni is growing into one of my favorite characters here. Her selfdoubts during the fights made her so real, especially, because like it's said, she's the only one without powers in this group. She's the Batman-Detective-Leader-type character with selfdoubts. I like that. I really love it. Zenobia is just too cool. This is only the second issue I read about her, but I love her. She knows that she has anger problems, but she also knows when to keep calm and save her power for the real fights. Her scene with Hawkgirl was really nice. Dawn, my favorite character of the first issue. She didn't get a lot to do in this issue until the end. But when she finally did something it was great. I love what you two do with these characters. Gabrielle is such a cool new character. I wonder if the spirit will bond with her and give her powers. Maybe she becomes Kole or Amethyst or somebody like that. I checked both these ideas on Wikipedia, but none of the girls was named Gabrielle So I look forward to see the story conclude. 5 stars. Edit: And I forgot to mention the fantastic cover by Steve. Man, you were born to draw these girls.

This is basically a "how-to" on forming new teams, on writing perfect three parters, on just presenting a package that is the best it can be. This "pilot arc" has grabbed the attention of everyone that's read it, and rightly so, the characters are compelling, the story thrilling, and the identity of their mysterious benefactor a complete conundrum to those intrigued! You quite simply have to read this title!
I'm a big Hawkgirl fan, always have been, and your use of her in this series guys is one I'm thoroughly enjoying. Dawn too fast became a favourite from Don's Justice League run, and now Jonni? She's pretty damn fantastic too! I wasn't expecting it! Not one bit!
Zenobia, of course, is a favourite, not only because I've used her and I know what kind of conflict and drama her presence can create, but because she's part of the DC2, and this series is ingrained completely into the mythology, just as Danger Trail fast became, another example of nigh perfection when it comes to fan-fiction.
Great work, Sam and Don-- and a fantastic cover Steve, I always look forward to your art, and today was no exception, that was a brilliantly composed piece of work, and I want more because I'm greedy! Lovely.

There was nothing that was not perfect about this issue!
Some very strong characterization and plot, exciting action, thrilling mystery (who is this Gabrielle character?!?) and laugh out loud dialogue. Oh, and that cover practically made love to my eyes.
The villainous SPIDER feels like a shadowy pulp evil-conspiracy-type organization (which can only be good). Zenobia adds a nice edge to the team, but like Charlie, I am really enjoying Kendra here, and I expect their clashes will be amusing. Jonni Thunder has just that right balance of arch wit and earnest intelligence, and I am even enjoying Dawn, who was not much more than a name to me before last issue.
Well done Sam and Don and Steve. I am well and truly hooked now!

Second issue was even greater than the first one. Zenobia is a breakout character in this issue, but Hawgirl had the best line.
Loving SPIDER as well. Keep up the great work.

Not much I can say that hasn't been said already, so I'll just chime in with "Keep up the good work!" and "When does the regular series start?" ;D

Thanks for the support, everybody Rest assured, we've got a whole lot of plans brewing for the regular series, once we've finished up our first adventure against SPIDER! Riz- you're on the right track Go and check out Steve's cover for All-Star #16 for a better clue about Gabrielle. Everyone, I'm really glad to hear that the characters are resonating so well. Dawn and Jonni are a lot of fun to write, and Kendra and Zenobia both have a great spark to them. We're gonna keep right on adding obscure characters to the team, and hopefully each new addition just highlights everyone's personalities even better. Personally, I'm looking forward to the regular series to have a chance to slow down and get the Birds getting to know each other better

Thanks a lot for the high praise from some of the site's great luminaries. We work hard on these issues because the characters and concept means a lot to us, so it's great to see it really resonating with the readership.
I got to really enjoy Zenobia from Charlie's use of her in Wonder Woman, and then I tracked her original appearances down for further inspiration. She's a very liberating character to write, that's for sure, and she definitely will continue to make life interesting for our heroes as the series continues (and it will).
I have truly fallen in love with Manitou Dawn as a character, and it thrills me to see she's being accepted by the readers here. I felt she got badly mangled over in the DCU, treated poorly in all the worst ways, for what should have been a break-out, innovative character. There's lots of drama ahead for her as she continues to figure out her purpose and role in the greater DC2 mythos.
Hawkgirl was sharply defined from the very start under Dave's hands, and to just take her forward from that foundation, to take the nuggets and hidden depths he set up in her, is a delight. That he agrees with it all is possibly the best compliment I can get in this regard. She's got a lot of drama headed her way too, and some of it may be coming from a surprising, non-Birds corner, so keep an eye out.
Jonni Thunder is a great obscure Roy Thomas Earth-Two character: how could I not show her love? She's a bit different from her original portrayal, and those people familiar with the Maze Agency comics may see some of Jennifer Mays slip in (her fashion sense, for one thing LOL), but Jonni is in a strange place, by her own choice and by the machinations of Mockingbird. And Boris, she does have powers, and next issue, we see them in action...and why she's not a fan of them!
The mystery of Gabrielle is almost all Sam's doing; she took a germ of an idea and ran with it in such a fascinating way. She's not going anywhere, and Steve's recent reveal of the third cover offers a peek into her future, and wait until you see what comes next.
And for the final question in the queue from Susan: January. We're not planning on missing a beat, so be prepared for Birds of Prey #1 in January when we see two new cast members and a dangerous new enemy appear!
Thanks again for the great comments and questions and critiques and here's hoping part three lives up to it all.
Take care Don
