Great issue! Once again Grant gives us a very intriguing history lesson of Bruce and Ra's that slowly brings things into focus. I love the feeling that I get with the writing in this issue. Batman is obviously on top of the situation, but there's a definate underlying feeling that he's actually nervous... dare I even say... slightly scared? This is exactly the feeling that should be there, since Ra's has really always been the "other side" of Bruce, in many ways. Great characterization all the way around, and what the heck is going on with the Joker?! Geez, maybe we'll find out in this months issue of Detective Comics. (Yes, shameless plug, couldn't be helped.) 5 stars, partner!

Thank B!
Is Batman scared? It's possible. At the very least, he sees an extreme threat that knows him as well as he knows himself.
I agree with you about Ra's too. He is just as driven by a mission as Batman is, and like Batman justifies his means with an end he thinks will ultimately be a benefit to everyone.
As for the Joker...that was alot of fun to write. I think once one gets past the idea that the Joker is funny, defined by silly gags and puns, and get to the heart of the character which is that of a completely deranged killer, you can write something much more interesting....Mind you, I don't think anyone wants to stay in the Joker's head space for too long.
I can't wait to see the next issue of Tec to see how things develop!

Nice find, Mark! I wish we had some sort of official relationship or liaison with HEROES, as they seem to the the Wizard Magazine for fan fic--- and they really seem to like us! Might be something to consider... Great review you got there, Grant. Check out what the reviewer had to say about the "brinksmanship" gambit between Bats and Ras that was so controversial last issue. A glowing recommendation, and just more evidence that this title is in good hands!

LOL. Hey cool, at least we know some people are reading DC2, hey?
What is this Heroes thing all about and is there a way we can promote DC2 through them?

I just wanted to say that the glimpses of the Joker's "origin" as Patient 666 (in Cell 13 no less!) made for some gripping reading!
Some truly disturbing stuff--- in a good way!

A very good read. Solid writing and the 'flashbacks' into Joker's past (in the guise of old reports) was great. Chilling stuff to say the least.
As I said over in 'Tec... something big is coming... I can feel it. Should be a hell of a ride.
Love the way the Joker is coming across. That put the story over the top for me.

A very good read. Solid writing and the 'flashbacks' into Joker's past (in the guise of old reports) was great. Chilling stuff to say the least. Thanks! One of things we are doing in Tec and Batman, I hope, is to make the Joker truly scary. The character is pretty fluid, so he works when interpreted in several different ways, from cold stone killer to campy clown. But I wanted to try and push him into a place where he really became chaos incarnate. There is no grand scheme. No end game in mind. Just a man driven to make others suffer because he can and because its the only thing he gains pleasure from. Well stayed tuned to Tec 30 and Batman 30 because we are turning the dial up to 11! Well he is interesting to write because he doesn't work like other characters. I wanted to try and get some insight into the character, which is hard to do when you write the Joker from his own perspective. He is too insane to be introspective or to even really care about his own motivations. I don't think the Joker cares about himself anymore than he does others. Its also hard to get some deeper insight into the Joker from Batman's point of view. As I see it, Batman is no longer particularly concerned about WHY the Joker is the way he is. he only wants to stop the Joker. He probably hates the Joker. But he doesn't waste time trying to understand why the Joker enjoys killing. So I rather liked the idea the taking a look at the Joker from a more clinical point of view, use that to explore the character a bit and hint as to how the Joker ended up as an unwitting pawn of Ra's Al Ghul. Of course, the Joker is now a free agent again and as we will see in Tec #30, he's not particularly happy about it...which is bad news for everyone involved.

Loved this issue, and the flashbacks of not only Bruce, but Joker too - although I found his excessive use of 'lulz' a bit, I dunno, forced? He just doesn't seem the chatspeak type to me...especially back in 1999. But thats just a speck of a gripe really, and nothing to detract from the five stars I gave this story! ;D
