I'm really proud to see David Charlton on this title. It's been through a few hands, originally I was going to hack at it, then Brian and I were going to team-up, but when Dave offered to step up and write it, I couldn't have been happier-- Dave, after all, has chaperoned the "Young All-Stars" into the DC2, and is irrevocably tied into the Golden Age and the JSA on site-- and after reading his first few pages, I knew we'd have a hit on our hands.
Dick Grayson's continuing investigation is superbly written, and Dave gets the tone of the event pitch perfect, and with his nods to Lovecraft and his mythology (a perfect fit for the event, considering it's partly inspired by him!) the story reads fast and effective. The issue fits into the main mini with precision, and, though I don't want to ruin anything, the open and end are shocking, harrowing, and give a hint at the Hell to come for our intrepid heroes. And topping it with a cover by Boris?! This is what the DC2 is all about!
Five stars, Dave. Keep up the good work...!

Thanks for the kind words, Charlie. I was very pleased to participate in the DC2 Nemesis event, even in this small way; I am a fan of the story, and hope my contribution lives up to the rest of it!
(And I hope Don won't mind that I took a page--- literally!--- from the Danger Trail to fill out the Ray's Golden Age origin!)

This was a great story. Excellent take on Dick and The Ray. Of course, Obsidian was my favorite moment, and it's terrific how you were able to bring him in and show us how he's been doing (expecially with the crisis). Awesome cover, by the way.

I thought you would like the Obsidian bit--- and it only makes sense that he'd be feeling something in regards to the Crisis (though to be precise, his powers spring from a completely unrelated source, one I look forward to exploring soon in the pages of JSA). In keeping with the recent status quo, I tried to make this a Batman tale, and not necessarily a Dick-as-Batman tale; the focus needed to be on the Ray, and how he relates to this event in the grand scheme (and it just so happens that I was able to sneak an origin story in there, too). Glad you liked it, sir! And that pic by Riz is of his usual phenomenal caliber! I think he particularly "gets" that character, or at least how he should be visualized! Looking at it helped to put me in the mood to write this story! And a lot of credit has to go to Charlie: he is the mastermind behind this story (as well as the chief architect of this event), and his are the broad strokes here--- I just filled in the details! Thanks for the feedback, buddy. Much appreciated!

Ah, even then, this event wouldn't be what it has become without the input of Don Walsh, who helped create the final story beats that have become so irrevocably important to the ongoing tale from day one. The villain of the piece wasn't always going to be Nekron, but it was Don's amazing ability to mine the past that planted that seed in my mind. His help in the early planing stages was too important for words. AndalsoKevinFeeneywhoputsupwithmymonthlypanicwheneverIsendinanotherissue...

this issue was great, then again I expect nothing less from a Charlton/HoM team.
It's real easy to let Batman overpower a story, which the character tends to do whenever he's involved (same with Superman and the other big heroes). But Dave did a great job keeping the focus on the Ray and not letting the current situations going on the the batbooks overwhem it.
Just a great detective story...bravo!

Seems to me it's important to carry on with Batman-as-Dick, otherwise that aspect takes over the story, but to treat Dick as the character he's always been. Glad you enjoyed the mystery aspect of the issue. Now that you know what happened to the Ray, tune into Nemesis to find out what happens next! Thanks for the feedback, sir!

Both Dick and Ray are awesome here.
I've been following Ray, off and on, since DC did their origin/bring him into our continuity-style ministeries in the 90s. I don't read any DC now, of course. But I am still very fond of the character, and am glad to see David using him in JSA All Stars; and that he has a role to play here as well.

I was hoping you'd read (and enjoy) this one: in doing some research for this story, I dug through some Ray backissues from the early 90s--- and was thrilled to discover in the letter column feedback from one Jay McIntyre of PA! Thanks for the feedback, buddy!
