Shucks, wish I'd got there earlier and read the Wiener version - that would have been hilarious.
Anyway, definitely my favourite issue so far. Thought your handling of the New Outsiders was great. Kind of surprised that Dick's caught up with current DC2 time again. Does that mean he's back with the Titans again or is there a Nightwing-clone saga in the works? Surprised that Dick and Barbara got on so well, treating their ordeal with The Joker so jovially. Maybe they're in denial. At one point, during the Batman & Robin flashback, I thought you were going to get Dick to give Babs a piece of paper and make a list of everything she'd got wrong back in Nightwing 1. Also surprised that Robin knows Huntress.
Liked the Ollie's Angels line - sounded kind of familiar.
Why was there no quote from a musical this time? My world feels incomplete without one.
Great cover by the way, even though I wasn't sure why the "New" was wonky on the New Outsiders logo.

There IS a song-quote! Looks like editorial cut it... (I'll edit it back in later.) Glad you enjoyed. As far as continuity, I admit I'm playing with a slightly looser one. If a hero appears in more than one book, it could be that in Book A, a week lasts 3 issues. In Book B, an issue might last 3 weeks. Dick left the TT after TT #3. At the end of NW #7, he'll be on his way back to New York. For what happens in the middle, I apologize. The timeline probably won't fit seamlessly. (I got nervous enough when I thought Beast Boy was going to join the TT since he wasn't there when Dick left... which would make things all the more awkward if Dick returned to find a new teammate... whom he had already met in the pages of TT... I'm going to stop before the rest of the readers get a headache...) Brian was a big help as far as getting the N.O. right. As for Joker, sometimes the way one copes with something serious is to pretend to treat it lightly. Not surprised you're surprised. This is one of those things I checked out with Brian. I believe more details will be forthcoming in future issues of N.O. And yes, I LOVE that cover!

Wonderful story. Not only do you have an outstanding take on Nightwing, but your handle of The New Outsiders was just as superb.

As long as I stay strictly within Dick's POV...
Thanks!

Excellent all the way through. It was a treat getting little glimpses of this one, before hand, and now that I've read the whole thing, it's just outstanding. Have to say my favorite moment came with Dick's new gift. (If you hadn't fixed the filter it could of ended up being called the Wiener-mobile) The letter was perfect and showed that "other" side of Bruce that some writers at other sites just don't want to acknowledge. Well done.
And speaking of Bats, I want to publicly thank you for allowing me to use him this month, as well! It was a treat!
Keep up the great work!

Another excellent issue. I always like interactions with other heroes, and you were spot-on with the New Outsiders. It's interesting to see Green Arrow as an almost "father figure" with the Outsiders, and he seemed to fall into that role when dealing with Dick.
I enjoy your writing style, very detail-oriented and psyche-probing. We understand why Nightwing does what he does as opposed to just describing what he does. Given this character's rich and complicated history it's a special touch to write him this way.
It's good to see Dick connect with Barbara and I could definitely buy their attitudes toward the Joker incident. They don't need to relive it; they already were there, so it's plausible to morph it into something less painful (at least with each other) and move forward.
I also love how the spectre of Bruce consistently hangs over Dick. It's the story of a young man trying to grow up and show "dad" he can do things on his own. Dick still has to sort out his feelings for Bruce (but will he ever be able to?) and yet the methodology of his chosen profession serves as a constant reminder of that very large shadow he wants to come out from under.
Looking forward to the next issue (a Weiner and Babs team-up?).

Thanks. Maybe it comes from being an English Lit major in college. They teach you that there are no wrong interpretations, as long as you can back them up. And yes, Dick is trying to figure out exactly what his place is in the world. He wants to come out from under Bruce's shadow... except that sometimes running out in the open is a stupid thing to do. And Dick knows it.
I should have the solicit for the next issue in shortly...
Thanks for reading!

Glad the song quote's back in. My world is now complete.
Also nice to see the proofreaders get a credit. They did a superlative job this issue. The only thing I could find fault with was outside the story itself - presumably Robbie Malone's in canon, rather than in cannon.

This was an issue so enjoyable that, in my mind, it rivaled a lot of the comics I can think of on the market today, as well as stomping on others (most of Winnick's stuff and Nightwing to name but two). The shocker at the end had me going ''Roy?! Roy?! ROY?!" and I loved the interaction between Dick and the New Outsiders (especially Dinah and Ollie). It was interesting to see that, in the eyes of the superhero community, Dick is still in Bruce's shadow. Huntress calling him ''Robin'' and Ollie referring to Batman must've been a little painful for Dick, and you reflected that well throughout the story. It reminded us all that, past the non-stop, dazzling action and the astoundingly well-written guest-stars, this is just a tale of a guy trying to make his own way in the world. And, with you at the helm, what a way it'll be.

To be fair, the fact that Babs and Roy were dating is something that's been touched on in earlier issues of N.O. Dick hasn't been Nightwing for very long, and most of his colleagues wouldn't know about the namechange. Although, as will be revealed in #6, some people just might have an inkling... And yes, Dick definitely wants to be recognized on his own merits. The problem is, when he does things Batman's way... they work. Darned annoying!

"Don't be stupid." That's the last thing I'd expect Batman to say... but it's still more believeable than "I'm the goddam Batman." ;D That whole flashback was great, making Dick sit down and analyze himself like that. Glad to see Dick and Babs together again, or at least in the same room. As for hittin' it with Roy...hey, he's a suave melon-feeler, she probably couldn't help herself. I'm really sorry I missed the whole "DC2 Weiner Incident" that I keep reading about in the lettercols -- this is what I get for being so far behind on my reading! And lastly, a huge hand for Riz's jaw-dropping cover!

Hi, Susan!
Well, technically, it was "don't be silly", but thanks! Bruce is always holding himself to higher standards than anyone else. And, despite the discipline and the drilling, deep down, I don't think he wants Dick to be as intense, neurotic, and controlling as he, Bruce, is. Not that Bruce would apply those adjectives to himself, of course...
I'm developping the Roy n Babs backstory for #6
And yes, that about sums up my initial reaction to the cover as well!

Oh, I forgot to mention: we had what I think was our first in-story editor's note! When I saw the asterisk next to "buckwheat" I thought it was a typing error, but nope, it was just markng an explanation at the bottom of the scene! Very cool.

Comes from "Things to do in Denver When You're Dead". But I rechecked with a friend who grew up in NYC and played with kids who were... um... connected. It exists. And it's messy.

That's what I love about Ellen and her knack for continuity--- some stuff that I just threw out there as a joke, she gives it depth and emotional impact (witness also what she did with the fall-out of the Bat-family, from just a few sentences in 'Tec #2).

Thanks, guys! Continuity is my safety net. The more there is in canon to work with, the less likely I am to find myself out on a limb with my arms flailing madly. Glad you enjoyed!
