I do believe I was lost for words when I read this issue when you sent it me in the first place, Ellen. Second reading? Holds up. The characterisation, as ever with your work, was spot on (And may I be the first to publicly welcome you back to the Nightwing fold? We missed you!), and I loved the bit with the cop telling off Nightwing. It just made sense. The returning of the cowl (A key scene followed up from Batman #30! I approve!) was beautiful, and I cannot wait to see how Gordon and Batman's relationship evolves from this point.
Batman, Detective and Nightwing will be the places to be in 2008/9!
Thank you for coming back to us, Ellen!
Oh, also, if you loved this issue (And Ellen's writing!) as much as I do, be on the look out for DC2 Showcase #2, which features a short by our talented Mrs Fleischer! Keep your eye out for that book, because it'll feature pieces from Ellen every couple of months! (We aim to please!)

This was the comeback of the year, folks! I've loved every issue of Nightwing so far, and comparing one with another would not be fare, like comparing apples and orageno, but Ellen not only returns, but does it triumphantly and with the style and class we come to expect from her. Being a huge fan of her Elseworld work, I couldn't help but note a bit of surealism in Dick's plight through all of this. The emotional tone was electrifying and heart wrenching and having had to face a parents death, the only word I can use to describe Dick's state of mind was... real. And in my opinion, it can't be done any better than that. The cover was stunning, the story tight and intense, and I'm also looking forward to seeing where The Bat Family goes from here. Yeah, Dave, I said it! 5 well deserved stars!

This was the comeback of the year, folks! I went away? Nah, I've been around, just more behind the scenes. (Blush!) Thanks, Brian! Thankfully, I didn't have a personal experience of that magnitude, but I did try to bring out a lot of what I went through when my grandfather passed away unexpectedly when I was 17. Wow! It's going to get dark and creepy, Brian. SOON!

I don't usually do this but...
I am halfway through this issue, and I just have to salute Ellen for what is turning out to be an emotional powerhouse of an issue, pitched just perfectly to avoid melodrama, but still kick me in the gut.
Not a title I usually read (no offense, 'Kid, I'm just not a big Batfan), but this "Death of" storyline has got my attention, and any time Ellen returns to regular continuity stuff, well, that gets my attention, too!
More later!

I, too, saw this before. Doesn't lessen it's impact any second time around.
High marks for the echoes of Tim's speech during his origin arc in the actual comics, Dick's being solid and stern, or as much as anyone is during all this. Oh, and did I mention I want to punch that cop and Tim's "friends" in the teeth? And poor, poor Alfred....
I can't do "quiet" scenes half as well as this. Some people do high action better, but nobody does the small characterization moments better.
Damn....now I have to go rewrite the relevant scene in July's Titans issue. My scene isn't remotely emotional enough.
Five stars.

I've seen this written before, but never more effectively as I think it's been done here.
The issue brings up so many other issues and complexities to the Batman/Nightwing/Robin saga that clearly this book is in the best hands by a powerful wordsmith.
The cover is great too. Not sure where this might go next... but bravo.
***** from me.

How will Babs react to this? BTW - this issue's cover is similar to the cover of the Prodigal TPB.

I'm sure she'd be extremely shocked to hear about Bruce's passing, and, at the very least, she'd call the manor to express her condolences.
That being said, I have no current plans to use her in the NW title.

Batwoman will be appearing in Detective Comics some time after #33... How she reacts in New Outsiders (if she does), I have no idea.

Not much I can add to the effusive and well-deserved praise for this issue except to say that I thought it was a perfect tie-in to the current bat-arc. Getting rid of Bruce Wayne was well-played, and the dynamics between Dick and Tim were touching.
I'm *shivering* (ha ha) with anticipation for your horror issue.

Magnificent! (and I don't throw around superlatives like that very often!) I think Nightwing #27 is going to go down as one of the single most important (not to mention best) issues of the DC2. Momentous stuff is going on here. Dick Grayson has outgrown the teen-sidekick paradigm, and I can't think of anyone I'd more rather see inherit the mantle of Batman (well, it might be fun to see one other play around with it a bit...). It was a nice synchronicity to see, at the same time, Tim start down his path to Robinhood (ha!) in the same issue! Everything just clicked in this issue, and made sense, from the cover-up Dick, Alfred and Tim concocted, to Tim's well-thought "modest proposal." This writer does her homework better than just about anybody (a league she shares with such luminaries as Don Walsh and Susan Hillwig). Ellen's characters act and talk like real people, so it's easy to become engrossed in the tale she weaves. She makes us care about these folks! This was simply an incredible journey, and one I feel like I was on with Dick the whole time, as he went through the Five Stages of Grief... This is just one of those issues we think we'll never get to see, but thanks to the freedom of the medium, we get a glimpse of what it would be like if Batman died... Oh, and for the record, this is the first time I've read a "Bat-Family" -type story, and felt that it was right (now, no one fall over or anything ). Like Tim said in the issue, nothing brings the family together like a wedding or a funeral...! For that matter, will we see a funeral for Batman and /or Bruce? You'd think the Justice League at least would spring for a memorial (they'd know Dick wasn't the original--- at least Clark would)! It would be hard to point out a favorite scene in an issue that was nothing but a collection of them, but two I'd like to recognize: when Dick collars the mob enforcer and makes his pun--- pure Grayson! and when Dick talked to Kory on the phone--- Ellen, I'd never thought I'd see the day! (The irony is, I had Dick happily-ever-after with Babs in my Gotterdammerung series--- a new installment of which is right around the corner--- and Ellen has him with Kory in Nightwing, when, of course, we both prefer the others' arrangement !) The readers have chosen! The Batbooks are the big summer must-reads! I am off to read 'Tec next! Nice cover, Ramon, but what's with those hairy insect legs coming down from the logo and from over Dick's left shoulder...? Five stars!

Whoa! I know, I know! I'm honored you think so... and a bit dumbstruck! LOL! I'm honored. Wait... they aren't real? Santa lied to me? Thank you so much! Not in the NW title, but possibly in one of the others. LOL! We know I try to respect canon where possible. If Dick and Kory are together in TT, it doesn't make sense for him NOT to talk to her so... Sheesh! lol ;D THANKS!

Very solid issue. Lots of things for Ellen to tie up and work on in the wake of the story in Detective and Batman, and she did it well. Lots of emotional responses from various characters, and lots of stories to make up. I loved that part, trying to figure out how to knock off Bruce to the public. That was good. And was a nice highlight to see how useful Tim was in that regard. I've always liked Tim and he came across very well in that scene.
By and large, a very solid bridge between the devastating end of the Ra's storyline in the other two Bat-books and preparing for the next big phase of this tapestry. Well done.
Take care Don
