A great throwback story here.
You perfectly captured the spirit of Captain Marvel that I love so much (which DC never seemed to be able to get right). You picked some great literary inspirations, which was a terrific fit for a terrific story. Can't wait to read more!

Superb job, Aaron (who is our very own Batarang)! You really nailed everything that makes a Captain Marvel story fun, and just a bit more unique than a typical modern superhero story.
Your characterizations are terrific--- and not just Billy and his friends Freedy and Mary, but the supporting characters as well! Mrs. Wormwood, Sivana and the thugs felt like they were talking to me from the pages of a WHIZ Comic from the 1940's (okay, from my Archive Edition of the WHIZ Comics from the 1940's)!
DC itself has tried to revive this property so many times, with so little success--- and now it is in the hands of the writer, I feel, least suited to present the Marvel Family mythos (Judd Winnick). I really believe that we at the DC2 have hit upon the formula to make a modern Shazam! title work--- so, for the fans out there looking to read the real thing, give this book a try!
When we first started talking about this book, and how we were going to approach it, Aaron and I were pretty much on the same page. We wanted a book for the audiences who enjoyed Harry Potter movies, the Smallville TV show and the Encyclopedia Brown mysteries I read as a kid--- we felt that we had to make Cap relevant to a modern audience without losing the wonder of an old-fashioned comic book story. And I think Aaron hit all the right notes in this fantastic debut issue!
I hope everyone on the site will give this title a try, and support the resurgence of Captain Marvel--- as he should be!

This was one fantastic first issue! I love the fact that this was centered on Billy and crew then the big cheese. Favorite moment for me had to be Mary's comments about Captain Marvel and Superman. Excellent!
This was really well written and a perfect beginning to this new series. You, Aaron, have me hooked!

Thanks to all for the kind words. It feels weird writing responses when I'm used to writing my comments about the issues.
Doc, thanks for the good review, and thank you so much for the terrific cover!
I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the plotting of our esteemed EIC. If I showed everyone the outline Idle provided me for this first arc you'd see all I really did was connect the dots. Heck, my eight year old could have written it! But thank you for the high praise, D.
House and Starlord I greatly appreciate the comments as I know how much I've enjoyed reading your stories. Hope you like what's coming next.

Pretty much an introductory issue, but still good.
Isn't Mary supposed to be Billy's sister? Cuz if she is, it's a little creepy.

I was wondering when someone was going to mention this so let me make things perfectly clear, once and for all.
In the DC2 Mary is NOT, nor will she ever be revealed as, Billy's sister.
No Luke/Leia-esque creepy junk here.

Don't we lose a bit of heavy weight Shazam! continuity doing that? Well, I have faith in you, especially after the cool showing of #1, but still, reservations! But I'm sure you'll make it work!

Aaron and I came to the conclusion (seperately, but at the same time) that Mary and Billy should not be siblings. It only makes sense in the sanitized comic environment of the 1940s, but in this update, we feel that we could get more dramatic milage (and more modern relevancy) from this new dynamic.
Believe me, the Marvel Family will come into its own in this exciting new series, be palatable to a modern audience (always the problem before when DC tried to revive it), and yet remain true to the traditions and sensibilities that have kept fans loyal for 66+ years!
I just have to say, of all the changes and tweaks we've done to make our continuity uniquely DC2, I am most proud of the work we've done with Captain Marvel. And I would like to officially go on the record and say that Aaron Martel is the perfect writer for this title--- you folks are going to love what he has in store!

Good work here, Aaron! I know how much our EIC here loves the Big Red Cheese, so I'm sure he put you through all sorts of trials before giving you the book, and it appears he chose well.
While I may not be a regular reader, what I've seen so far is well done...plus, I think we may have the first DC2 equivelent of a "kid's title" on our hands. That's not meant in a disrespectful way, I just thought as I read it that SHAZAM (as we present it)would be a fine book for younger readers, something for our members to steer their children to as a entry-level intro to DC2 and fanfiction in general.

I have to say that I was impressed. My busy schedule didn't allow for me to read tis last month when it came out so I am playing catch-up so I can get to issue #2.
I never really got into the character until Jerry Ordway kicked off the bug DC revival with the The Power of Shazam graphic novel and the series that followed. I loved the take on the character during that time but since haven't been impressed any time Capt. shows up in a story. It's like he's only been used because DC still owned the rights of the character, never to showcase how cool he really was. I have fallen way behind with comics and DC lately so I can't comment on Winicks current take.
I will say that I am now a fan of the DC2 version and will eagerly go and check out issue #2 right now!

This first issue of Shazam had me feeling confused and lost. No real background on Sivana's character.
C.C. was mentioned has being gone and that was it.
No real detail on that ancient coffin. I know that it is suppose to be a hooking device, be it wasn't.
On to the next issue.

This first issue of Shazam had me feeling confused and lost. No real background on Sivana's character. Well, the thing is with fan fiction, there is a certain amount of information that the reader might reasonably be expected to know (otherwise fan fic writers are re-telling origin-stories, and I as a fan-reader would find that extremely boring). Fans of Captain Marvel should know that Thaddeus Bodog Sivana is a mad-scientist type, and essesntially the Lex Luthor to Cap's Superman. Well, if you have enough information to know who C.C. is (a very minor figure in traditional Shazam mythos), then how come you don't know Sivana? C.C. is most significant in DC2 continuity, as he was the wielder of the Power of Shazam before Billy, and was the Golden Age Captain Marvel (and the inspiration for DC2's Superman). For more on C.C. see All-Star Comics #s 1 & 2 (Featuring Captain Marvel) and Action Comics #8 (The "Crisis: The Apokolips Imperative!" crossover). But this first issue should work well enough without prior knowledge of those issues. A mysterious sarcophagus of some kind of ancient power didn't get your attention, huh? It would make me a little curious...! I'll meet you there!

Well I can't talk for others but I have been reading Shazam from DC now for quite a few months and have never seen or even heard of Sivana in the book at all. The only reason why I know who C.C. is, is due to the information that is already on the site here about Shazam. If I hadn't read that or what I researched on Wikipedia I might not know him either. Again he isn't mentioned in the modern day Shazam books. The only other Shazam that is mentioned is Billy the previous one to the current Freddy. KDragon

Umm... I would not bring up "Trials of Shazam" in comparison to our title.
Completely different animal.
If you wanted to read the REAL DC Captain Marvel book, it's... Monster Society of Evil. That is the only Captain Marvel book I recognize from DC, and I'm sure other people will agree with me.

Well, I support your opinion, Charlie. Trials is awful, and a corruption of the idea behind the Marvel Family.
C.C. isn't well-known because he was only incorporated relatively recently in the DCU, in Power of Shazam, and his being Captain Marvel was just a brief "alternate history/what if" kind of scenario. The idea of C.C. Batson being Billy's father and the first Captain Marvel is a DC2U only twist.
Take care Don

I have to chime in with my two cents that Trials is about the worst crime Winick has perpetrated on comicdom in general and Cap fans in particular.
And he's perpetrated some doozies!

Trials is a bastardization of the Marvel Family. I too like Winnick's work (GA included!) but it feels like DC don't know what to do with the property! Better they let it lie than pick at it and tear it apart, because eventually no one will recognise the original greatness of the concept. Boy says magic word and turns into superhero! Wish fulfillment!
Where's Jeff Smith when you need him..?
