It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do I bless the rains down in Africa Gonna take some time to do the things we never had.

Suicide Squad Roll Call:
Amanda Waller: The tough as nails head of the Suicide Squad.
Manhunter (Mark Shaw): Formerly of the now-defunct Manhunters cult. Enhanced strength, speed, stamina, agility, and limited healing powers. Now the second in command, and leader in the field.
Vixen (Mari Jiwe McCabe): Tatu Totem gives her the ability to mimic the powers of any animal. Lover of Mark Shaw and third in command.
Knockout (Unknown): Former member of the Female Furies of Apokolips. Possesses super strength, regeneration and limited invulnerability.
Catman (Thomas Blake): Big game hunter, skilled tracker, excellent duelist, and good marksman. Has made several unsubstantiated claims about the powers of his suit, but the real danger is in his viciousness and cunning.
Killer Frost (Crystal Frost): An ice elementalist, she is a living heat sink, needing warmth to survive, though she is learning to have some control over this, enabling her to survive longer. She can project cold and ice from her body, and can manipulate cold air to allow her to float. But her heart is the coldest thing about her.
Enchantress (June Moone): The Enchantress is an actual second personality, an immortal spirit of unknown vintage, surviving within June Moon's psyche. When June says the word "Enchantress," this second personality steps forward and takes control. Enchantress is a witch of unknown power, though it seems to wax and wane depending upon the situation. At all times she is a mistress of magic to be feared. Recently she has demonstrated the ability to actually lend a portion of her power to her host, June; her motivations for this are not entirely clear.
Resurrection Man (Mitch Shelly): Is resurrected each time he dies, gaining new powers having to do with the circumstances of his last death. Currently, he has a limited, scaled down version of the powers of Captain Atom; atomic blasts, flight, et cetera.
Electrocutionee (Paul Buchinsky): A murderous vigilante, he uses the electric power circuitry of his suit to fry his enemies. How he gained the suit and what his motivations are, at this time, not yet known.
Terra(Tara Markov): Bastard child of the Markovian Royal Family, this troubled and conflicted young woman has power over the Earth itself. The full extent of her powers has not yet been measured.
Parademon (Unknown): Born and bred to be a soldier of the Apokolips war machine, he has strength, a limited form of flight due to the wings of his suit, and a battle axe forged from the dark metals of his home-world.

The Kingdom of Mubotu, in northern Africa~
King Tawaba looked out over his kingdom and felt a kind of peace. It had not been that long ago that his people had been just another tribe struggling to survive in a land slowly turning to desert. But in the last five years, everything had turned around. They had led their people back to the light, and he was proud.
What had once been a run down ramshackle town with tents on the outskirts was now a prosperous, growing city of more than four thousand, with brightly colored buildings. The new Royal Palace was modest but well constructed. There were few guards here; this was not a dictatorship. It was a slowly recovering nation, beginning to prosper and at peace. A shining beacon of hope in the third world.
Tawaba stood on the balcony of his palace and surveyed the moonlit city with pride and happiness. The future was secure.
Or so he thought at that moment.
His next thought was of shock and alarm as a bullet ricocheted off the balcony rail, missing him by inches. He jerked back in horror and turned to run inside. Another shot grazed his shoulder. He ran for the interior, shouting an alarm.
His own guards came rushing to his aid, but not before a third bullet actually slammed into his left arm and broke it just above the elbow.
After that he was safe inside, but shocked, angry, and grimly determined.
There was rapid machine gun fire as his guards dealt with the would be assassins.
Why? The thought burned in his mind. Why would anyone do this to us?

The Squad had assembled in the briefing room.
"Mubotu," Waller told them, "Is a shining example of modernization and development in North Central Africa. Previously little more than a tribal state, now properly developing into nationhood. Never a terrorist state nor of any difficulty to the US, the government is in fact friendly to us and one of the most peaceful countries in the continent."
"Who cares?" said Catman. June glared at him. Vixen positively hissed. He held up his hands in a placatory gesture, but they could tell he really didn't care.
"There are two answers to that question," Waller answered, curbing her own irritation. "First, after the whole Starro mess the Government is doing it's best to look good by providing humanitarian aid and genuine help overseas, rather than irritating people with military strikes. The whole Kasnia situation didn't help matters any in that department, either. So the Squad is the natural tool for the Government to use. Second, apparently some of the more military countries around Mubotu are less than happy with this situation and wanted Mubotu to be what it had been in the past; a neutral ground for them to travel to, not a 'pawn of the Americans'. So first of all there was an assassination attempt on King Tawaba of Mubotu, and now...it seems likely these enemies will recruit super powered help. Which is another reason we were summoned."
"Do we even know which rival nation is responsible?" asked Manhunter.
"We thought it was Libya first, but they've been cleaning up their act recently. So it might even be a...private contractor."
Catman grinned sourly; he could guess what that meant. "A criminal consortium?"
"Possibly. Spy satellites have detected the presence of several metahuman villains in the area, which is why we think superhuman help will be brought in on the next attempt."
"Can we get there in time?" Vixen asked.
Waller nodded. "We believe there is still some negotiations about money going on between the would-be assassins and their potential paymaster. All the same we'll be cutting it close."
"Which is the priority, protecting the King or taking out the organization behind the attempts? And what if it is a foreign government?" Manhunter pointed out.
"Protecting the king is the first priority. Taking out the enemy is the next logical step. If it's a criminal fraternity, by all means take it out. If it's a foreign government, well it depends on which one it is, but do whatever's necessary to prevent a second attack. If possible...teach them a permanent lesson."
Killer Frost grinned in anticipation. Electrocutioner let the lightning play between his hands.
"I have a hard time believing the American government cares about this," Terra said.
"Cares specifically? Of course not," Waller agreed. "Cares how it reflects on them and their presence in the region? You better believe it. Now get moving."

King Tawaba hid in the basement of the palace with his wife Queen Uwabe. This was not, properly speaking, a bunker, but it was built as a defensive measure in a country where cellars were almost nonexistent.
"Why now?" Tawaba sighed. "Which nation wants to attack us?"
"It makes no sense, husband," said the Queen. "The timing is all wrong."
"I know, dearest one, I know. That is exactly what troubles me about it. Well, that and the bullet wound to my arm," he added dryly.
His own physicians had already removed the bullet using local anesthesia, and his arm was in a cast. But it was his metaphysician, the tribal witch doctor of the old school, who came to him now.
Uzangi had been with him throughout his reforms and rise to power, and was still with him now. He had dressed formally in Western fashion, but retained his charms and chakras draped somewhat disconcertingly over the shoulders of his suit coat.
"Good news, your Majesty," he intoned. "I have received word the Americans are sending a group of superhumans to protect us."
Tawaba smiled nervously. "That sounds good, but why? Do they suspect further hostile action against us?"
"They have confirmed the rumors of other powered beings being in the region," Uzangi said simply.
The King and Queen embraced. "I still have a hard time believing the Americans would support us at all," she said.
"Perhaps they have learned from the invasion of the giant starfish monsters," the King said, but his eyes were troubled as he said it.

The Suicide Squad plane soared over the Atlantic.
Electrocutioner was sitting with Frost again, and this time she was proving more responsive to his advances. "Not while we're on the mission," she playfully slapped his hand, "But when we get back..."
Electrocutioner grinned a sour, unshaven grin. "It's a date, frosty."
She laughed.

Terra sat a few seats away from them, contemplating the pack of cigarettes in her hand. Waller hadn't told her to quit, officially, but she had frowned at Terra having the cigarettes in the first place.
But ever since Frost had taken her out on the town...she hadn't lit up.
She looked at the pack for a long time...perhaps ten minutes. She got out a cigarette and lit up...but only took two drags before extinguishing it. She put the pack away.
When we get back, she told herself. After the mission was over.

June merely sat, holding Mitch's hand.
"What's wrong, June?" he asked her.
"I think...I think I will need you to be here for me in the days to come."
"Of course, June, always."
She squeezed tighter. "I hope so, I really do."
He reassured her further, but she merely kept a tight grip on his hand.
Inside her head, Enchantress smiled.

"This whole situation feels wrong," murmured Vixen. "I agree with what Terra said at the briefing. Why are we coming to the rescue in this situation? Nobody back home really cares."
"It's a PR move," grunted Manhunter. Then he frowned thoughtfully. "Um...I dunno how to ask you this, but...are you taking this personally?"
"What, because I'm black?" Vixen smiled thinly at her lover, and he braced for a roasting. But she went on, "Men. You always worry about the wrong things. No, I'm just worried about the tactical end of it. The hows and whys."
"Well that's nothing new for us then. Our missions are always shady and of doubtful intent," he pointed out.
She sighed. "Too true. I'm thinking we should split the team up."
"You're probably right, but we need more information. I'll start making judgment calls like that once were on the ground, and know some more of those hows and whys you're pondering."
She smiled sadly at him, and they snuggled close.

Knockout sat with her charge. The Parademon was bowed uncertainly over its knees—his knees, she supposed, as anatomically the Parademons were male—brooding silently. It—he—did not talk much. Not even to her. He did what she told him, and sometimes spoke to her when prompted, but mostly he just sat there. He was little more than a killing machine, separated from his true masters. She was a poor substitute, and well she knew it.
The longer he stayed here, the more he would have to adapt to Earth culture. Granted, she herself had not done this very much. But at least a little. He could not be a simple killing machine as he had been back on Apokolips. He would have to become...a person.
And how, by all the Darkness, would she manage that?
She blew out a sigh. Somehow on this mission, he would have to work as part of the team. That would be difficult in and of itself, but the team's own dynamic didn't help matters.
[shadow=green,left,300]"Mistress?"[/shadow]he asked her in the dark language of their own, hearing her sigh.
"Just thinking of the battle ahead, loyal soldier. Rest now while you may. And remember not to harm our allies once combat begins, and above all, do not strike until I tell you to."
[shadow=green,left,300]"As you command,"[/shadow] he said and lowered his head.
She reflected that her earlier thought was wrong; there were such things as female parademons...they simply never left the breeding grounds.
She chose not to think about it, but in so doing she realized that she must have already been somewhat softened by this world.
The thought simultaneously amused and annoyed her.

King Tawaba was waiting for them.
This, too, struck Vixen as subtly wrong; most of their missions weren't so...high profile. But then, maybe it was just a matter of a change in the administration back home since the Starro invasion. She hoped it was something that simple, anyway.
The King and Queen sat on ornate wooden chairs, surrounded by bodyguards and what Vixen assumed was some sort of priest standing to the right of the thrones. The King and Queen wore tribal robes, brightly colored and adorned, while the priest wore a western business suit of somber shade, with the articles of his faith draped over his shoulders.
This dichotomy was, in a way, symbolic of Mubotu's attempts to modernize and become one of the leading lights in Africa, to be more than a ‘developing’ third world country, and truly rise to success. The South African government in particular was paying attention, as was the much closer neighbor of Egypt.
"We are grateful for the American government's assistance, however unofficial," the King said, somewhat stiffly.
"Oh, it's official, your Majesty," Manhunter replied. "Just not very...well publicized."
"I believe I understand," Tawaba said, and there was humor in his voice, but not in his eyes. Probably having an arm in a sling had something to do with that.
"Though this is an unusually high profile action for our group," Vixen added.
The Queen nodded. "You would wish to hear the events?"
"We were given a debriefing back home," Manhunter said. "But any additional information may prove useful.”
"I shall answer all such questions," said the priest, stepping forward. He glanced at the royals, who gave simultaneous nods. "It is a grave time for our nation," he intoned. "As you know, the King was shot with an automatic weapon..."
His speech was long and boring and obviously designed to impress them. Before it was over, Killer Frost, Electrocutioner, and Terra were obviously not listening. Vixen glared at them, but they kept their mouths shut.
The speech didn't tell them anything they didn't already know. "With your permission, Majesties," Manhunter said, "I would like to study the scene of the assassination attempt."
"Of course," the King said, as the Queen nodded. "I will show you."
"You are most gracious," Manhunter said, almost bowing, as Frost rolled her eyes. "Catman, with me."

As King Tawaba led Manhunter and Catman upstairs, Queen Uwabe took Vixen to one side.
"And what do you think?" she asked primly. Her accent was strong but in no way distorted her words.
Vixen raised an eyebrow and smiled thinly. Unlike her earlier conversation with Manhunter, she didn't ask the Queen if her question was racially motivated. "I cannot be sure, your Majesty, we don't really know yet."
"Do you have a...guess? An intuition?" the Queen asked, choosing the words carefully.
Vixen paused, thinking about it. "Greed," she finally said.
"For money, or for power?" the Queen asked.
Vixen pondered some more.
"Both," she said finally.
The Queen looked thoughtful herself, and then gave a sad nod.

The King led Catman and Manhunter to the balcony where he'd been shot.
"Not to be difficult, or anything, said Catman, "But what do you need me for?"
"Because you're the only one besides me with anything approaching the skills we need to study evidence," Manhunter said, a warning gleam in his eye.
Catman shrugged. "Tracking's not exactly the same thing as forensics, but if you say so."
The King stood on the balcony, facing them. "This is where I was struck with the first shot."
"The briefing said there were two of them," Manhunter said.
The King nodded. "That is what I saw, and what the guards who shot back confirmed. We only recovered one body, however."
"Blood trail indicating the other one got away," Catman murmured.
"Which doesn't rule out the possibility of others,"
King Tawaba frowned. "Obviously they had backing, I thought that was why you were here?"
"Other people involved in that attempt, sir," Manhunter clarified.
"Ah," the King nodded. "It is possible, though we found no evidence."
Manhunter and Catman exchanged a look.
"The roof?" Catman asked.
"Not yet. Examine the balcony, would you?"
The big game hunter did. The bullet groove was not hard to find. "Down and away, they shot at his Majesty from the roof...but the fact that they abseiled down afterwards indicated they were ready for the possibility of failure of the first strike."
"Professional estimation?" Manhunter asked.
Catman thought about it, then nodded. "Yeah, these guys knew what they were doing. Had the King's security not been on the ball, they'd have got him."
"Anything distinctive about the caliber?"
Catman shrugged. "Not really. Looks like a standard round. I'd guess it was fired from an AK-47, but that would only be a guess. Especially since it was single-shot fire."
"Snipers?" Manhunter suggested.
"Snipers usually aren't prepared for hand to hand, unless they were high grade spec ops."
"You could've done it," Manhunter pointed out.
Catman grinned unpleasantly. "Except guns ain't my main thing, and you know where I was at the time."
"What I mean," Manhunter said patiently, "Is that it might be someone of your skill level. A contemporary? Someone you know?"
"Nothing to suggest it here. Check the roof now?"
"With his Majesty's permission, " Manhunter said.
"Of course," the King inclined his head.

On the roof they found no incriminating marks; and the climbing equipment had already been removed by Tawaba's guards. Catman suspected there had been a third operative, and Manhunter agreed. But it was only a hunch.
The blood had already dried in the thin grasslands, but Catman did find some tracks. They faded in a northwestern direction, which told them nothing.
"I suppose we'll have to take a search party out that way," Manhunter sighed.

A few minutes later...
Manhunter and Vixen paced circles around each other on the carpeted floor.
"We have to search," Manhunter said simply.
"But we cannot leave the King and Queen unprotected," Vixen countered.
"Which means we're back to your idea of splitting the team," Manhunter said. "But who should stay and who should go?"
"Protecting the royals is the mission priority. Terra's powers can be used defensively. I nominate her."
"Gee thanks," Terra commented wryly from the side. "I get along so well with royalty, too."
"Yes, we've read your profile," Manhunter said. "Nevertheless, you stay."
"Yes, sir, Mister Manhunter sir!" she saluted sarcastically.
"But not alone," Vixen went on. "Who else?"
"Not Enchantress, we'll need her to fight against whomever we find. Same goes for Killer Frost." Manhunter frowned thoughtfully.
"How about Electrocutioner?"
"What, him and Terra? With no one to mind them?"
"Your confidence is overwhelming," Electrocutioner put in. "I have no problem protecting the innocent. It's the guilty I wanna fry."
"Yes," Manhunter sighed. "But your definitions of guilty and innocent needs work. We've read your file, too."
"I'll stay with them," Vixen said. "You lead the others on the search."
"I could stay," Catman volunteered.
Manhunter shook his head. "We'll need your tracking skills."
"Tracks already faded. Look, I don't mind finding these guys and kicking their tails. I just wanna be sure we find ‘em, instead of them comin’ back here and taking the King and Queen out while we're thrashin’ about in the bush."
"That's why we're leaving the others behind. You of all people know that tracks may spring up anywhere. In any case, my word is final," Manhunter glared at him.
Catman responded with his own sarcastic salute.
Vixen took Terra and Electrocutioner aside. "Protect the royals at all costs. We're not going to lose them, you understand me?"
Electrocutioner folded his arms. "Like I said before, the innocent will be protected."
Terra looked sour, but nodded. "I gotcha, Vix. Besides, playing nice-nice with you guys is my ticket to freedom."
"Good. Just one thing, Terra...."
"Yah?"
"Please, don't ever call me Vix again."
Terra and Electrocutioner shared a nasty laugh.

High Priest Uzangi—witch doctor, really—stepped into the cool basement of the palace. He walked with purpose and determination to the secure line they had installed down here. It was almost impossible to get cell phone reception in Africa, service was almost nonexistent. But landlines were certainly possible. And very definitely useful.
The phone was an old, black chunky rotary. They could've gotten something more modern, but the King wanted something that looked "official". Uzangi had agreed with Tawaba when he said this, but rolled his eyes now. Tawaba embraced the modern world only when it suited him. Uzangi, for his part, had no problem merging the old with the new, to best effect.
This was as perfect an example of that as any. He dialed the number he wanted, and when the phone on the other end was picked up, said, "The American group is splitting in two. Some to find us, some to protect the King. Send your new acquisitions here; kill the Americans too, while you're at it. Once the palace is secure, we can defend it against the others when they return."
He listened to a response, and then hissed angrily, "Then double their pay! I want them here, now!"
He slammed down the phone.
Tawaba had been useful, up to a point. But now it was time for the real power in Mubotu to step forward, and lead the country to true power and prosperity.
His power.
Uzangi smiled to himself.
