“It [the Cheshire Cat] vanished quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin, which remained some time after the rest of it had gone.” -Lewis Carroll
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon, little boy blue and the man in the moon. "When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when, but we'll get together then. You know we'll have a good time then." -Harry Chapin

Continued from Teen Titans #27.....
“You know her?” Dagon asked.
“We’ve crossed paths before,” Speedy responded.
Cheshire grinned wide. “Indeed we have. It’s too bad you and your ‘friends’ have decided to try and stop me. It won’t do, you know.”
“I was under the impression you were part of a.... larger organization these days.” Speedy said, slowly drawing an arrow and knocking it.
Cheshire’s goons raised their rifles; and Dagon at least could tell there were more of them behind, as expected. But she waved a hand for them to lower their guns, at least for the moment. “Oh, I am; but franchising is certainly still allowed. When Markovia is mine, certainly I will pass the.... financial benefits along to my associates.”
“Why Markovia?” Speedy shook his head. “And why now?”
“Now now,” Cheshire waggled a finger, “You warrant no villain’s exposition from me.”
“It probably has something to do with the fact that Markovia recognized Qurac’s corrupt regime a while back,” a new voice said from behind them “Only, why take out the King that let it happen?”
They all turned, to see Catman materialize out of the darkness in a way that Dagon recognized and admired.
“I wasn’t on the Squad back then,” he went on, “But I read the files.”
“Perhaps ‘let’ it happen was exactly the right word,” Speedy mused, arrow still trained on Cheshire. “And perhaps the old regime had outlived their usefulness.”
Cheshire’s smile turned to a scowl. “Playtime’s over, kids.” She hissed a command to her followers, and their rifles came up again.
Catman leapt for Cheshire, ruining Speedy’s aim, so he loosed his shot at one of the silver-suited goons instead. Dagon tensed to leap, but before he did, he hit the alert button on his Titans’ communicator.

The alarm sounded in the T-Jet, and the Titans were on the move almost instantly, following the signal.
The distance was too short, really, to use the Jet; so Kid Flash zipped them along, one by one, save for Raven who teleported herself.
But Resurrection Man and Enchantress were watching.
“Whatever it is, it’s happening,” Resurrection Man said into his own communicator. “But Catman hasn’t called us yet.”
“Probably busy fighting,” Manhunter answered back. “We’ll follow as best we can. Move.”
Resurrection Man nodded. Fast as Kid Flash was, they had seen him move in the same directions, back and forth, over and over.
“East,” he said simply.
“Acknowledged.”
Enchantress twitched her hand and they were gone.

Inside the castle, Terra made as if to move with the others, then slowed her pace.
The others ran on, even Geo-Force, without noticing her slowdown.
She would go, oh yes. Help fight the “good” fight.
But she wanted out of Squad, and the Titans seemed to be the best opportunity she was going to get; almost ideal, in fact. They were a bit goody-goody for her tastes, but given what the Squad was like, she’d take that with thanks. Oh, she knew the Titans were likely fighting too, but they wouldn’t accept her simply because she thought Beast Boy was cute. She had to bring something more concrete to the table.
So she skipped down the hall to where Doctor Jace had her lab. She frowned and moved closer, hearing strange noises inside. Unfamiliar voices.
“Booster, what are you doing?!? That’s nothing like what we’re looking for.”
“So look, instead of making bug eyes at me.”
“Oh, that’s rich. What a wonderful one that was.”
“Face it Beetle, I’m the punslinger!”
“Uh-huh. Just shut up and look, would you?”
Terra frowned and clenched a fist, which glowed with power. Just because someone was messing around with Doctor Jace and her creepy “Friend” didn’t make them the good guys. They might be working for these saboteurs, whoever they were.
She peered around the corner and frowned. Two guys in even more goofy suits than the Titans wore were rummaging around in the lab. Doctor Jace and her American buddy were nowhere to be seen.
“I don’t think what we’re gonna find anything like it here....” the guy in the golden costume broke off and stared....not at Terra, but at Gregor’s pet “guardian” standing silent and ominous in the corner.
“Hey...” the golden one said thoughtfully, “Doesn’t that remind you of....OMA--”
Terra cleared her throat and rounded the corner. “You boys done being third rate industrial espionage rejects?”
The blue-garbed one started, and accidentally knocked something off the desk he had been rummaging through. It sparked nastily when it hit the floor.
The mostly golden-clad one laughed. “Hey, Beetle, this time you’re the one who screwed up!”
“Shut up you idiot! Let’s get out of here!” They worked some kind of control she couldn’t see and vanished.
“Okay....maybe they were third rate Doctor Who rejects instead.” Terra frowned thoughtfully at the place where they had been, then at the device that had hit the floor. It looked like a remote control of some kind. Sighing, she shrugged. She was no detective; she couldn’t guess what she should take from here. She was hoping to over hear Doctor Jace and her buddy (Was it the cyborg guy’s father? Did she hear that right?) plotting something against Gregor or the world, but nothing doing. Instead she had had a freaky interlude that would have left her wondering if she was on something, had she taken anything stronger than nicotine in the last five months or so.
She shrugged and decided to shuck her butt to where the action was. But she couldn’t say seeing that comedy duo was exactly a waste of time, either.....
She shook her head, and as she left the palace, called a rock to herself, leapt upon it and shot off towards the action.

Cheshire leapt and rolled away from Catman, who seemed hell bent on following her. Speedy actually seemed relieved not to be facing her; she would have been amused by that if Catman hadn’t been so determined to slit her throat.
Though she had covered it well, she had been both surprised and dismayed to see Speedy here. Oh, he was nice enough to look at, certainly; but he was here on business, either as a Titan or as part of Checkmate, or both. Which was bad. The presence of both the vampire and the big game hunter unnerved her more than slightly. Especially since Catman was doing his level best to kill her.
He slashed with a bowie knife in one hand; she dodged easily, and countered with a kick to his midsection. He wheezed painfully, but was not so incapacitated that he was unable to lash out with a foot in turn; a glancing blow off her own leg. He was drawing another blade from his belt, and Cheshire was willing to admit to herself--if not out loud--that she was beginning to panic.
She had anticipated metahuman “hero” involvement, of course. But not so soon. Not nearly so soon. She had hoped to solidify her hold on Markovia before that happened. But the new king had bought his own defenses, even before the metahumans had arrived; that killing machine of his was formidable. Fortunately for her she could still buy the services of plenty of goons.
They were well trained in the use of their high tech laser rifles, but Speedy and the vampire were tearing them apart. Meanwhile, Catman was determined to tear her apart.
She blocked another kick and sidestepped his slash with his other blade; a katar, or bhundi dagger as they were sometimes called. She didn’t waste any witty, sensual banter on this one. She knew enough of him to understand that in another time, another place, he would have been more than happy to give her most anything she wanted. But he was a committed mercenary, “on the payroll”; and she was his current target. Bad. Very bad.
So she had to get close enough to slash him with one of her various poisoned nails. She had brought a full repertoire; a different one on each finger. Something for every situation. She had known tonight would be rough. But she hadn’t expected to find the enemy knocking on her door like this. It was most distressing, and would require a major rewrite of her plans.
Now, how to get close to Catman without him stabbing her? She would have to wait for him to miss with another slash, and manage to scratch his arm before he pulled it away. Difficult, requiring the exact balance of timing and agility. But such was second nature to her.
Speedy and Dagon had just about finished off her first run of troopers, but there were more coming down the underground pathway. Unfortunately, that was when the Titans showed up, too.
“Take down the ringleader immediately!” Nightwing exclaimed.
“Watch out for her nails, they’re poisonous!” Speedy warned.
Cheshire cursed, as this shout also alerted Catman. On the plus side, though, it made him draw back and him more cautious in his own attacks.
But now the Titans were here; Nightwing and Starfire were coming right for her.

Kid Flash had brought the Titans to this place at his remarkable speed, and now they began forcing Cheshire and crew back down the tunnel.
Nightwing and Cheshire traded a few blows and blocks. Then Catman closed in on the other side, and Starfire blasted bolts from above. Cheshire desperately back flipped.
“It’s over,” Nightwing said.
“Not remotely,” Cheshire sneered. “The only advantage you have is the fact that we’re in cramped quarters. Numerical superiority is mine.”
At that point most of the Squad showed up.
Catman smiled unpleasantly. “Oh really?”
Dagon was still tearing through Cheshire’s soldiers like a hot knife through butter, but then one of them got off a lucky shot. A bolt of green energy slammed into the vampire, and with a wail of agony he went down.
“Yes, really,” Cheshire grinned back. “And your two groups are hardly on the same page.”
Her troopers got off three more shots, taking down Enchantress and the Parademon. Knockout screamed in rage and broke a trooper in half.
“But it is clear that the tactical situation is not ideal for me,” she admitted. “Fortunately I made contingency plans.”
Nightwing and Catman went for her. She back flipped again, narrowly avoiding another blast from Starfire. Resurrection Man, Electrocutioner and Killer Frost were closing in, so she threw several explosive pellets to hold them off. “Back off, now!” she shouted. “Strategy fourteen!”
The surviving troopers began to retreat. Cheshire pulled a tiny remote control from her belt. “It’s not my normal style,” she admitted, “But needs must.” She triggered the remote, just as Kid Flash was blurring in. The tunnel collapsed on top of him, and all the others.
“We should finish them,” one of her soldiers said.
“Normally I would,” Cheshire admitted. Her eyes strayed to Speedy’s limp, half-buried form. “But with their failure, the King will send his own soldier after us. If we waste time killing them, it will undoubtedly arrive.”
The soldier shuddered.
“Exactly,” she nodded. “We will take one of our alternative tunnels in. Focusing all our strength on the robot will allow us to destroy it and take the castle. We can then defend that position against any of these surviving vigilantes. Come on!”
She disappeared into the darkness, and the soldiers followed.
Less than two minutes later, the rocks began to lift from the Titans and Squad members alike. Some of them sat up and groaned.
Terra continued to use her powers to free the others. “Having fun?” she asked dryly. “Whatever would you do without me?”

Raven healed the wounded, as they gathered around the T-Jet.
“Those blasts were meant to kill,” Cyborg muttered. “Mid-level disruption charges. Very fancy. Fortunately none of those hit are exactly normal people.”
“Yes, we feel so normal right now,” June said wryly. She had changed back after being hit.
“We?” Resurrection Man looked at her, frowning.
“We both felt the hit, I promise you that,” June told him.
Resurrection Man nodded, still looking worried.
“Well, that was a colossal failure,” King Gregor said, stepping up to them. “The enemy got away, and you accomplished nothing.”
“We identified the ringleader as Cheshire,” Speedy pointed out, “And we located their primary route into the country.”
“Very good,” Gregor offered a mocking slow handclap. “But not good enough. Now I will deal with things my own way.” He stormed away, royal robes swirling, and marched stiff-legged back towards the castle.
“Gregor, wait!” Terra chased after him. “While I was in the castle I saw--”
“I’m not interested in your opinion, bastard!” Gregor shouted back.
Terra’s eyes flashed and she clenched her fists.....but if she attacked Gregor, they would send the robot after her. That would be a fine thing, wouldn’t it? She shook her head.
She turned to Geo-Force. “Brother, please listen.....”

Gregor stalked into the lab. “Doctor Jace! Doctor Stone! Where are you both?”
Doctor Stone walked in, eyes tired, face hangdog. Gregor might have suspected him of having a tryst with Jace, if he didn’t know her so well. Science was her only passion. And from what Gregor knew of the American, he was filled with bitterness and hate.
“Your son and his friends will try to destroy your creation, I just know it,” Gregor said without preamble.
Doctor Stone merely nodded. He seemed bone-tired. “I will not kill my son...but certainly I will use our soldier to bring him under control. As well as defend your country, of course,” he added hastily.
Gregor nodded. “Where is Doctor Jace?”
Stone shrugged. “She went to bed an hour ago. Haven’t seen her since.”
“Do we need to wake her up?”
Stone shook his head. “I can handle this.” He frowned. “Why is the control on the floor?” He picked it up.
In the last split second before Stone hit the activation button, Gregor wondered if the bastard had known something about the remote, wondered if that what she had been trying to tell him. But before he could say so, Stone pressed the activation button.
A nasty yellow spark arced around his hand. Stone yelped and dropped the remote, which broke in half, throwing up a shower of golden sparks.
Gregor began to swear, but before he could finish the second syllable, the metallic soldier was on him, knocking his crown off.
Stone cowered back in horror.

Geo-Force led both teams in a desperate dash for the castle, but it was too late.
The soldier exploded out of a wall near the front gate. There was blood on its arms.
Geo-Force swore, and then it was coming right at them.
But Cyborg got there first, screaming his father’s name, trading blows with the thing.
Cyborg actually got past its defenses; it seemed more geared to attack than defend, which made sense. He hit it once, twice, and thrice; rattling it. But then a bolt of energy erupted from the center of its head, and sent him flying back, rolling around in agony, his sonic cannon steaming and twisted.
As quickly as he fell, Knockout and the Parademon were there to replace him, hammering away at it. They actually knocked it back and hurt it, but eventually it just grabbed their heads and slammed them together. There was an audible clunk, and both fell. Neither got up.
Geo-Force blasted it with lava. Terra blasted it with rocks. Starfire blasted it with her starbolts. Electrocutioner blasted it with electricity. Enchantress hurled magic energies at it. Killer Frost threw jagged shards of ice. Resurrection Man blasted it with atomic energy. Speedy shot explosive arrows at it.
It staggered back, armor steaming and trembling. They were hurting it, yes.....but they were not hurting it enough.
Not nearly enough.
Finally it started to glow; and then blasted out a shockwave of energy at them in turn, throwing almost everyone down. The skies echoed with it, and the Earth trembled. Terra was down on her knees, wheezing painfully around a cracked rib. Electrocutioner and Frost were knocked out cold. Beast Boy was also on his knees, dazed with a concussion. Geo-Force was also dazed, though less severely, and wiped blood from his nose.
Wonder Girl, Kid Flash and Raven moved in next, Dagon not far behind. Raven wrapped her soul self around the thing, trying to shut it down.
Her eyes narrowed. “It is not purely machine....it is partly alive?” Then the soldier construct blasted her with his power. It shouldn’t have affected her soul-self, but somehow it did. She stumbled back, lights flashing behind her eyes, the world seeming to spin around her.
Such only motivated Kid Flash, of course. He was now enraged, punching and kicking it at super speed. He was doing more damage to it than anyone before him....at first. Then he frowned as he realized his strikes were losing their sting. He felt winded....his eyes widened in shock as he realized it was sapping his speed! But before he could do anything with the realization, a punch knocked him down.
Wonder Girl was next; throwing more blows, and a high kick that finally sent it reeling. Dagon came in with his claws, which could strike the surface of the thing and leave scratches. They avoided having their heads meet painfully as Knockout and the Parademon had done, but finally it did catch Wonder Girl with a glancing blow. Still in the fight, she threw another high kick, which it blocked by grabbing her leg, and throwing her into the castle. Then it shook off Dagon like an offending dog.
But by then Vixen was there, charging in with the power of a rhino.

Nightwing and Manhunter had reluctantly hung back, waiting for the opportune moment to strike.
“We’re finally wearing it down,” Manhunter said with some excitement.
Nightwing nodded his agreement. “Speedy!” He called. Aim for the--”
A green bolt of energy struck Manhunter. His healing powers saved his life, but as it was he was rolling around in agony. Nightwing whirled....to find Cheshire’s poisoned nails within an inch of his face. Her pet army was spread out behind her; more than fifty of the silver suited goons.
“Thank you for weakening it enough for us to deal with,” she said, smiling.
Speedy turned and aimed at her, but she shook her head. “I wonder what infection you’d like your vigilante friend here to have, mmm?” she asked him. “Concentrate your fire on the construct, as he was suggesting. Aim for the....what was it?”
“The head,” Nightwing said through gritted teeth.
“Ah yes, capital suggestion.” Cheshire nodded to Speedy, who made a sour face and turned away to face the soldier again.
“Ready your weapons,” Cheshire told her troops. “Our time is now!”
