That is actually one of the most striking covers I've seen on the site for a long time. Simple, effective, very cool.

Intersting. I have long thought there must have been more to WWII then just the physical plane. With the Spear of Destiny and other artifacts in Axis hands it was surprising that the Axis didn't prevail. This is one explanation for that. Perhaps the only point of criticism I might find is the "coincidence" of almost all of DC's major war characters being involved in the same mission. No Unknown Soldier yet but there are still three more issues to go.
I see you decided to go with the American Bart Hawk version of Blackhawk instead of the Polish version.

No Unknown Soldier yet but there are still three more issues to go. I was concerned as well as about making this a free-for-all for characters. All the characters that have been introduced so far are all the characters that will be involved. So no Unknown Soldier. No Losers. No Ghost Squad, etc. I did. I'd rather have the American of Polish descent rather than the later travesty that Chaykin made of him.

Sorry. I guess I don't know how to do partial quotes. You stated you didn't want to use Ghost Squad or anybody else in the book besides those you already have. I presume you meant Ghost Patrol. I can actually see them in here before Easy Company or even the Blackhawks. That doesn't mean I'm not enjoying what you're doing.

That'll teach me to type while watching a football game Yeah, I meant Ghost Patrol. I guess the reason why I didn't go with them ultimately was the semi-cartoony style of the originals. Not to say that the original stories were inferior - they were actually quite dark for their time but I'm more of the Kubert school of "realistic" art and I am influenced in my writing by the original comics. Who knows though? I certainly could be persuaded to do a Ghost Patrol story.... or contribute issue #6 to the long stagnant Challengers of the Unknown series since it "ended" with them supposedly headed off to WWII to run into the Boy Commandos. That's kind of the nice thing about playing in the war years with these characters - nobody else has touched them so I'm free to kind of do my own thing with them. So, please feel free to suggest anything. I'm certainly open to ideas or how people feel about certain characters or things. And thanks for reading!

This issue had it all, James! A striking cover, terse, well-written battle scenes, compelling character work, realistic dialogue, and a developing story that will keep me coming back.
I think WW2 is a fascinating backdrop for a story like this. Perhaps the defining event of modern history, it is well-suited to the heroes and villains that stalk these pages. Your period detail is icing on the cake and adds a verite neatly contrasted with the occult doings of Nimue, Hanne and her lackeys.
The aerial battle with the Blackhawks was expertly written and so fun to read. I don't know the Hangman very well, but I get the impression I'm going to get the chance to get to know him much better soon.
Loved the friction amongst the Creature Commandos. These guys are hardasses.
Favorite stuff, however, was the Easy Company scenes. You are really exploring the humanity of Frank Rock, the quintessential DC WW2 character (for my money); his promise to the dying German soldier was believable and touching. I can't wait 'til he catches up with Mme Marie...!
And I know it stretches the imagination, but I for one am glad to see all these various DC concepts being brought in on this story. I get the impression that the Eye of Calitant will be a significant factor in the war, for one side or the other, so it feels right that some marquee characters are involved.
See you next issue!

This story almost has too much going on, I'm starting to get a bit lost. But I'll suck it up and keep reading, I promise. All in all, though, I'm loving it, mainly because (like you said) we've had very few WWII stories here on DC2. Nice to have these guys and gals in the hands of someone who's really knowledgable about the subject. And I agree with David: Sgt. Rock's characterization is the best of all.
