I must admit, I was in no hurry to read this issue. After a quick browse-through, I noticed that not only does it take place 400 years in the past, but it also lacks any DC2 character, hero or villain. Not a lot to hook my interest. Except... Except it was written by Kyle Bridges, one of our brightest new up-and-comers, and I've really enjoyed everything he's posted so far, so I knew I would eventually give this issue a shot. And, again, Kyle does not disappoint. The pacing and atmosphere is dark and broody, the characterization is razor-sharp and compelling, and the historical writing is--- I'm going to go with Hillwigian (I could have just as easily declared it Walshian) . As for the issue being devoid of DC2 elements, well, I get the impression we can consider this the opening salvo in a larger story Kyle (hopefully) is planning, much like what Scott Snyder is doing at DC today with Batman. And, of course, this being Rogues Gallery, the unspoken focus is on the origin of Batman's most danerous foe of all--- Gotham City. This issue is almost as exciting for what it doesn't tell us, as for what it reveals. The words Gotham or Barbatos (?) are never even used. I look forward to seeing what comes of this. Will we see Isabelle again? Also, that is one creepily evocative cover! I reiterate--- if you're not following this writer, get onboard! You won't be disappointed!
