BRADAMANTE
Words by Don Walsh
Art by
Real Name: Brenda Martin
Aliases: None
Status: Citizen of the United States with no criminal record
Occupation: Emergency Medical Technician, Search and Rescue specialist
Known Relatives: None
Group Affiliation: Seven Soldiers of Victory
Base of Operations: Santa Fe, New Mexico
Height: 5'8”
Weight: 155 lbs.
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Chestnut brown
Powers & Abilities: Brenda Martin is a normal person highly skilled in wilderness survival, a trained naturalist and very experienced in many environments, but particularly mountaineering and desert locations. She is also quite skilled in providing emergency medical care, though she's not sought out a paramedic rating to date. She possesses the strength and stamina of a woman her age, height and build who engages in regular intensive exercise and activities, but otherwise possesses no unusual abilities.
Except that she houses a powerful martial spirit. This is a feminine spirit of war and nobility that has haunted the world for unknown centuries and most often presents herself as the warrior maiden Bradamante (which she uses currently) or Britomart. Brenda can call this spirit forth by summoning up the spirit's magic spear. When she does, her strength and stamina double or triple, and she gains an increased ability in hand-to-hand combat and tactics. It also generates a magically-enhanced breastplate and shield that provides for protection from many forms of injury, and the shield can even generate a soft glow to light up darkness. Bradamante has only recently reclaimed her spear, and as its specific abilities tend to conform to the current standards of heroism, it's full powers at this time are unknown. It can pierce stone and iron, however, carve up material to be hurled in a showering assault, and has resisted the cleaving ability of the Shining Knight's sword. Eventually, the spirit needs to rest, but how long it can remain active depends on how much effort is being put forth, as well as continuing to grow as Brenda becomes a more accustomed host.
History: Not much is known of Brenda's early life at this stage. She has mentioned an aunt that lived in New England, and has displayed a commanding knowledge of historical and fictional knightly ways, people, places and behaviors that she's claimed led her to take up the role of an SAR worker. As the Bradamante spirit is equally mysterious at this date, how long it has been within Brenda remains unknown, along with how it came to choose her. Past hosts for this warrior spirit include Queen Guinevere of Camelot; Katherine Dee, daughter of legendary occultist John Dee; and Britomart of Elizabethan England; and obviously, Bradamante, the warrior maiden made famous in the Orlando stories. Who this Bradamante and Britomart were prior to hosting is unknown, if indeed they weren't actually the spirit in mortal form. There are many questions for Brenda (and others) to uncover.
Brenda first came to discover the spirit within her when she was trapped trying to rescue people from a crashed space launch. A testing for solar sail technology called Vulcan One resulted in the vessel crashing into the New Mexico desert outside of the White Sands Missile Base. Captain Julian Devante stepped out of the flaming wreckage transformed into a molten monster calling itself Vulcan. It killed Brenda's crew but she narrowly escaped and pursued his rampage to the outskirts of White Sands. There, she watched the Seven Soldiers of Victory duel with it, and when many were scattered, she managed to get her fingers on the Shining Knight's sword. He'd sent it with Firebrand (as he was laid up with a broken leg) with some instinctive belief it held an important key to upcoming events. Sir Justin was correct: when she picked it up, the warrior spirit of Bradamante surged forth, and helped the other heroes defeat Vulcan.
Since then, she's been acting as Sir Justin's squire, learning more about the spirit within her, as well as how to be a better knight and hero under his tutelage. She's considered a part of the team, and even led several of them on a quest to recover Bradamante's old spear to enhance her power and so Justin could have his sword back as he finally healed up.
The Future: Brenda Martin is playing an unwitting role in a cruel plot of revenge by several of the Soldiers' foes, being used as a wedge to further disrupt the marriage of Justin and Danette and damage Justin's friendship with Pat Dugan. The fact that recovering her spear also meant releasing Sir Breuse sans Pitie on the modern world has also left her with the weight of responsibility for his upcoming crimes. And at some point soon, she's going to want to understand the spirit harbored within her heart.
