A great conclusion to the arc, and I feel like “Stop me from growing this stupid goatee." is a really strong indicator of the humour of the book and the general direction, that fun, Whedon-esque, banter heavy approach to storytelling that lets the stories sail nicely along their way. As ever, I enjoyed the cast and the story was great and it's always nice to see Giovanni kicking about at the end. With John staying around and the group as strong as it is, I can't wait to see where they go next or who joins their ranks!

Sincerest thanks for this. I'm really glad you appreciated the humour, even with the serious story. I have always felt that humourless stories felt less real somehow, because we all know that in reality, even in the direst of circumstances, someone always makes a smart comment or a little joke, and for the gravity of the situation, it's that much more amusing. As I've grown older, I've enjoyed stories more that are aware of humour than ones that seem to take themselves too seriously, and so I endeavour never to take myself so seriously that I can't make even a wry joke.
I always did like John/Giovanni and I thought it was a shame that in the classic continuity, they basically tossed him out with bathwater. The Golden Age magician heroes always deserved far better than they got, and while I will always love Zatanna, I think it was a huge mistake to just cast away her father. He may not be a highly-active superhero type anymore, but that doesn't mean he isn't important. I also felt that they defined Zatanna too much by her father, or absence thereof -- it was always handy for writers to ignore all the other aspects of her in favour of the loss of her father.
I'm very glad you enjoyed the resolution of the story. I don't know what it says about me that the most serious storyline of the series revolved around not the titular character, but the most important supporting character. In any case, I'm very glad you appreciated it and I hope, very much so, that you'll continue to enjoy the series as it occurs. Thanks so much for writing in to let us know!
