I had a horrible sinking feeling just now after updating the calendar.
I've been putting out three titles a month for a while now. Some of the stuff I write well in advance-- Justice League for example-- while others I write close to deadline-- Green Lantern Corps-- and the rest are written over months and months as the feeling takes me-- anything 10 Years Later-related, mainly. Thing is, the anniversary stuff (yes, we're now in the region of our Eleventh Year Anniversary and yes it looks like Omega Crisis will wrap around the time of our Twelfth. Yikes.) normally goes into the 10k word count range, while I aim for (and overshoot) my monthlies at 6k. I feel like 6k is a solid number for the monthly instalments, but sometimes, as I tend to do, I waffle a bit, and the word counts increase.
Looking back at the last four months of Justice League, the words counts have been:
#54 - 6,677
#55 - 5,761
#56 - 5,462
#57 - 8,190
Doing the same for Green Lantern Corps, they've been:
#63 - 8,772
#64 - 6,010
#65 - 8,064
#66 - 6,145
Finally, all this Omega Crisis-related stuff:
Superwoman: Of Tomorrow #3 - 10,606
Omega Crisis #1 - 11,196
Batman: The Final Knight #2 - 11,502
Omega Crisis #2 - 10,138 (coming this week)
My output for the last four months has been ridiculous, don't you think? That's not counting the fact I'm neck deep into The Authority #1 by 8,982 without being near the conclusion! I'm also working on Gotham Knights: The Last Laugh, Superwoman: Of Tomorrow #4, and they're already quite hefty. I think my overall point is that I'm putting out so much by way of word count-- and hopefully so much by way of quality for the most part, why can't I apply this to my original work? I've not been able to balance by "work-life" writing (DC2) and my personal-life writing for some time now. I lack the inspiration for the latter, but the former is something I've worked so hard on for so long, the stories flow so easily.
I guess that's why I'm trying to wrap up stories and threads in Green Lantern Corps, and the same for Justice League, but looking at that, I'm still years away from being happy with the conclusions, and by the time I get there, I'll have had another dozen or so story ideas! It's a little bit terrifying!
Anyway, I had to rant. What do you feel about word counts? Output? That kind of thing?
