Great collection of shorts, Charlie! You obviously have such affection for the Guardian and it shines through every page. The moments he shares with his daughter are delightful, if bittersweet-- I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Ultimately, I'm very glad Bendix is 'just' a villain. I loved his prison and his escape, and look forward to the Guardian tracking him down.

The moments he shares with his daughter are delightful, if bittersweet-- I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. Thanks for your kind words! You won’t have to wait long for some solid (hopefully) shoe droppage. Justice League #75-80 wraps up so many stories that began twenty-five issues ago, and we’re two issues into it, with the third chapter landing this coming Wednesday. Ultimately, I'm very glad Bendix is 'just' a villain. I loved his prison and his escape, and look forward to the Guardian tracking him down. I think my thoughts on the direction solidified while I was writing the story. I found inspiration in the present day, with the right-wing political horror story that’s currently unfolding, acting as a starting point to take Stormwatch somewhere different. You've seen some of it through Bendix's rant, and we'll see it continue in either Justice League, or in the next season of Checkmate, which has been plotted quite thoroughly (I need to wrap season one up first yikes). Basically, I want to try to do something different. I want to push myself in different directions than I normally would, and if I can find a way to write a right-wing American terrorist organisation who think they're doing the right thing by crusading against metahumans and causing all kinds of trouble in the intelligence community but who are actually bastards, that'll be something interesting (I think).

That sounds good to me; the current political situation is such a nightmare we all need some fictional catharsis!

Such intrigue. I agree with Oblique, you definitely have an affinity for The Guardian. I must confess I haven't been keeping up with the stories. I have some more time now so maybe I'll get caught up. But jumping right into this I wasn't lost. There was enough hints as to what had happened and backstory to to keep me in the present without being so much backstory that it got lost in the past. Excellent job balancing that. Favorite line.

There was enough hints as to what had happened and backstory to to keep me in the present without being so much backstory that it got lost in the past. Excellent job balancing that. Favorite line. As we built toward the one-two punch of " Breaking Up" (JL#75-80) and " The Widening Gyre" (JL#81-83 and CM#7-9), I knew there were facets of the story I wasn't getting the opportunity to explore in the main books. That's the problem with there only being a handful of very focused titles on the site... there's little room for expanding stories into other books, because they all have a clear identity and I think we're way beyond an era of the site where you could weave the same story through different books written by different people. To that end, Justice League Presents... (and the yearly-ish annuals) has been a really useful tool, because it allowed me to tell more stories featuring characters you may not have a chance to be explored in the way I want them to in the main book, as well as expand on themes that don't have an opportunity to get a spotlight either. I really enjoyed putting together the Wonder Woman centric issue (which you provided the cover for!), but that could have used an actual Wonder Woman ongoing instead (and don't think I didn't consider doing another short run!) because it allowed us-- Oblique contributed a story as well-- to spotlight characters in her supporting cast that have been given short shrift in recent years on the site. It's just fun! Back to the Guardian though, and this story was just another wringer to put him through before the aforementioned Justice League arcs. It’s probably obvious to anyone who reads my take on the guy, but he’s the DC2’s Captain America, which one difference—he was never on ice. He’s lived through the entire 20th century, and he’s seen the best and worst that America has to offer. He’s also had a family, he’s loved and lost, and now he’s an old soldier in a young man’s body, and his past keeps stabbing at him in different ways. I won’t spoil the conclusion of " The Widening Gyre" but it’s safe to say that’s not the end of his story. He’s about to join another team. And we’ll see what that means when we return from our hiatus, whenever that may be. I’m focusing on other, non-DC2 projects right now, but Roy, as you well know, there’s something big coming next year. I can’t wait to get round to writing it!
