Riders on the Storm? I thought i was the only one who used song titles? So unoriginal! But it truly fit the story so it's ok. You can't end it like this! This tale took a side step from the main tale and gave us a look into the dark world of Apokolips and the war that goes on there at the same time Earth battles for it's life. I always look for memorable scenes and this tale was loaded with them. I loved the scene where Vigilante showed Batgirl how real the situation was. “You switched to real bullets” “This is a real war” Perfect! Another perfect example was when Huntress was saved by Batgirl. Don Rickles! Are you kidding me? Brian you really put Canary through the wringer on this one! I have a feeling she will turn out different then the time Mike Grell messed with her in Green Arrow. I can't wait to see what happens next! Bravo!

This was a major disappointment. It felt rushed. Even with the understanding that this is a mature title, the amount of graphic violence and gore that was thrown in seemed way to unnecessary, and written for shock value only.

Even with the understanding that this is a mature title, the amount of graphic violence and gore that was thrown in seemed way to unnecessary, and written for shock value only. I couldn't disagree more. What felt rushed to the above reader felt like a roller-coaster thrill-ride to me. What may have appeared to the above reader as graphic or gratuitous, served what this title does best: highlights the realities of a grim and nasty world (if we believe that the stuff in this issue doesn't occur in war-time right here on planet Earth, then we might be a tad naive or misinformed). And while there are books on the site that are as well written, New Outsiders is the one that constantly pushes the envelope, takes chances not only with plot and character, but with reader expectations. It takes a lot to put it out there, and this is a brave, talented writer! Kudos, Brian (and the usually unsung Mark)! I was appalled, enthralled and impressed. Best issue of the week!

Holy. Mother. Of. God.
Brian, you've written one of the most haunting, shocking, horrific... Awful stories ever. And for the context of the story it works... But the way in which you've done it... It's shocked me... And kinda appauled me too. Every time we went back to Dinah you gripped me and made me want to look away but I just couldn't because what you were doing with her... Oh jeez Brian, stop writing good. It's getting to me...
Best of the Week.

Even within the midst of all the war and the drama, there where the characters. It would have been easy to have had them acted differently than usual and say it's because it was war blah blah, but you didn't. They all stayed the same as they were on earth. Bravo! BTW I've always seen Desaad as a little sniveling toady.....not any more! Desaad Disgust me, and I hope Ollie gets his hands on him!

And let's not forget the absolutely incredible cover by Borize! One of your best to date! The girls of the New Outsiders never looked better!

I absolutely agree about the cover. It wasn't up last night when I read the story so I had to pop in to give it a peek. The NO gals looked hot, even in a place like Apokolips! Hats off to you Borize!

Wow, some great responses here. Roman: I try not to use song titles too much, but I heard the song while in the car thinking about this issue and it just seemed to fit to me. Glad you liked it. Glad you enjoyed the issue. The Don Rickles line was Mark's however. As was the entire scene of GA desperately trying to get to Dinah. That was all Mark's concept and I really couldn't have pulled this issue off without him... and one other... Idle: ... speaking of that one other! It's always great to read feedback from you. It makes all the sweat and work seem worth it. I really want to thank you for not allowing me to play it safe with this one. You pushed me to do better, and I appreciate that. Thank you. HoM: I'm glad you enjoyed it. With writers like yourself on this site, I've always have to keep working hard to keep up. Thanks for that! goldk: I'm glad the character's still shown through for you. They've all become a wonderful part of my life, so it's always my first concern when I write something... staying true to who each one of them is. Also pleased on your reaction to Desaad, since honestly I've never read much about him (although it probably showed tlbauer: I'm sorry that you felt it was rushed. What I was trying to do was keep the story moving at a rapid pace, so that the readers wouldn't have time to catch their breath. Also, Idle is right about the violence, it was not there for shock value, it was there to show what can't be shown sometimes in other books. That war is not pretty, it's down right vile. I do have to thank you very much though. Thank you for voting and expressing your opinion. It means that you took some time out to read what I had written, and that is always appreciated. Last note to riz for a truly awesome cover. I've been using it as my background at work for over a month now. The new banner is now my background at home! Kick butt banner, too! Thanks everyone for letting me be a part of this crisis. It's been a blast. Let's do it again in a few years...

If Dinah makes it out of this alive, I'll be shocked... My God, you never let up! From that first horrific image with the baby to the last of Barbara's costume (which is a great redesign BTW) covered in blood, you gave us a story that most certainly couldn't have been done in the other books -- the Mature Readers password is most definitely needed here! I am honestly afrraid of what's going to happen to the NO...will there even be and issue #11?

Even with the understanding that this is a mature title, the amount of graphic violence and gore that was thrown in seemed way to unnecessary, and written for shock value only. I couldn't disagree more. This was brutal, horrible and everything that war truly is. Every word was difficult to read, yet I kept going. Bravo!

Glad you liked it, Susan! Will there be an issue 11? Yes! Will everyone make it to the end of issue 11? No! How's that for a teaser? LL! I'm glad you made it to the end. Thanks for the kinds words and for posting! It's much appreciated.

War is hell, folks, war is hell.
I totally agree this is the place where we should see images outside of the norm or mainstream. That's why there's a password to read it. If it disturbs some people for graphically violent or sexual imagery they don't have to read it. I personally like the different tone. Now to the story.
Oh man Desaad does a number on Black Canary! I was CRINGING when I read those scenes. Who thought Desaad was small potatoes? I truly hope you're not killing Dinah off, because then Ollie will be even more cranky. Plus I would miss her.
The horrific scenes with the parademons serve to show us that while this is a fictional superhero universe this is also a WAR with real danger and real death. Awful, yes, but believable in context.
We've been teased someone(s) might not make it. Sounds like changes are in store for the NO. Just don't kill off my favorites, huh?
Another brilliant, if harrowing, issue. Bravo.

Thanks to both of you for reading and responding! I'm glad that it moved you both in some way. I have to admit that with everything I wrote, it was the toenail scene that made me cringe the most. Yes, Batarang, there are some pretty big changes happening to the Vegas gang in the next year. I hope your favorites survive as well. More importantly, I hope you continue to read and find out.

Whoa...
That I didn't need to 'see'... That torture session was way overboard, as was Barbara putting her hands in the intestines of that Apokiliptian...
I do hope Ollie tears Desaad's testacles off. And his vocal cords from his throat.

I just noticed I never commented here. I enjoyed it. The baby did it for me. I cringed. Great job. I agree that this is the title that delivers certain things others cant because of the password protection. I always felt that the kind of sickos the heroes go up against in comics really couldnt be betrayed all that realistically becaus eof certain restraints. It as a good thing as much of a bad thing cause really I donnt want to see it or read it in every story but from time to time it should be dealt with. A sick bastard like the Joker or any number of villains get their jollies off by killing people. In real life serial kilers do some very sick stuff and as I said I dont want to see all that in my comics but it should be brought up or conveyed somehow.

Thank you both for commenting. Even in this mature title, I try not to go way overboard with the gore, but it did work here and I'm pretty proud it, actually. Thanks for reading it, folks!

How does one access and read the stories? There seems to be some kind of password protection.

You have to request the password in the "Password for New Outsiders" thread, but I'll PM you it anyway
