I have to admit, I can't tell where Don ends and Sam begins with this series, and that goes to show the nigh perfect synergy these two writers have when it comes to this title. This is everything a Birds of Prey title should be, and yes, it doesn't feature an Oracle (but it does, and it's terrifyingly clever what these guys have in store), a Black Canary, Huntress or Lady Blackhawk, but the core cast is amazing, and even when they don't appear, the series can continue to hold strong.
We've seen the pilot of this series in All-Star (you should all read that) and we've seen how the main characters act around each other, so this was a nice little exercise in character and world building, contextualising the title against the world of the DC2 through ties between Kendra and Speed (RIP) and BoP and DT/NO. I loved that. It had to come, and it was handled beautifully by you guys, and I can't get enough of the superb characterisation you're offering the site.
Sam, I know this was you for a fact because Don and I were beaming over it, but your description of Red Claw and her "claws" was beautiful. I was wowed, and the idea of her hair being one of them? Superb. I mean, I can't use that word enough in reference to this title, it's such a neat little package that everyone should be reading.
Zenobia, one of my favourite DC2 creations (duh, go figure, I used her enough) shone here, and the scene in the museum was great, and goes a long way to show the depths you can mine with her character. She's not a mad warrior, because that would get boring fast, but she knows things, and she appreciates things, and I can't wait to see where her journey takes her.
And Steve! Steve Howard you magnificent so-and-so, that cover is pure class, and I can't wait to see what you next deliver. It's always a pleasure working with you, and seeing what you offer us, and I just can't wait for more. Great work-- and thanks to Boris for dressing it, he's an unsung hero when it comes to dressing covers as ace as he does here.
Thanks for this title, guys!
Charlie.

Well this is what I get for waiting too long to reply. Charlie swoops in and makes all the good points. But, honestly... Sam. Don. Steve - take yourselves a bow. Fantastic work here. I'm not familiar with the Onyx character but I'm intrigued to learn more and I'm always happy to see the "fragile" Gypsy show back up from her brief stint in the League. And Halo has all kinds of opportunities for good stories. Not a whole lot with Kendra or Dawn this time out but I'm sure they'll be back in force soon and the "Jenny Apple" plot is interesting as well. I look forward to seeing how it plays out.

This is so crazy: just when the DCU brings back Birds of Prey as a regular title, the DC2 gets one as well. Synergy! Or Syncronicity! Or some other word starting with 'S'! ;D Great work, as always. I agree that I don't know which writer did which part, but that's good! No distractions from the fun. I'm digging Zenobia as well. I has no knowledge of her before BoP, so I'm learning as I go. As for Onyx, I still remember the first time I saw her in a Green Arrow backup story in Detective Comics, eating a cold pastrami sandwich (she was eating it, not me!). Love her original costume with the cape and the headband...thanks for bringing it back! Keep up the good work, kids!

Wow, some wonderful comments to greet our new series. Thanks a lot for taking the time to tell us what really worked for you, what really reached out to each of you. Sam and I have a lot of fun working on each of these characters, and I think you're going to see some new faces showing up that will continue to add to the fun and ensemble feel of our cast. And you'll be happy to learn over the next few issues that Sam enjoys her Easter eggs as much as I. She named our casino, and I'm so proud of her! ;D Charlie, it's great to see the things you enjoyed, as they were some of my favorite aspects. He's been a great editor, letting us do our thing while at the same time providing a sounding board to some of our more off-the-wall notions and it's great to see it works out. The bit with Kendra will be important to her growth, for sure, and I'm glad that there was good emotion to her phone call. As for Zenobia, I think her scene was my favorite to write in this issue, as I got a chance to look past the "eternal angry warrior" she's been in most of her appearances. Sam's work on making Red Claw seem real was magnificent, and thanks for calling it out, Charlie. Wait until next issue, readers, when we see Claw at work. Brrr... James, you're going to learn a lot about the DC2U version of Onyx, that's for sure. I've been a fan of hers since her Detective Comics back-up tales, and been itching for a place to use her. And a chance to update her debut story with the Wisdom Key? Well, I'm pretty much in heaven over that. And as for Gypsy, she's fragile in her sense, true, but as your quotes point out, she's got another side of her that we'll see at play when the cats (or rather, the Birds in this case) are away next issue. She and Halo, they're just much too much fun to write. Susan, Onyx's original look is her best. I was so upset to see how they "genericized" her for War Games and her time in Gotham in recent years; she's lost everything that made her look sharp and made her different. I'm going back to what was very cool about her, and that includes the costume. And Zenobia again...well, if you like those two, just wait until they meet in Boston next issue! Mu-hah-hah! Kendra and Dawn will be back in force next issue for sure, and we'll learn more about Jenny Apple, and Red Claw's schemes, so hang on for a ride. And Steve, you deserve as much praise as either Sam or myself, so I'm glad to see you getting it. Your covers are fantastic, and you're an absolute pleasure and gentleman to work with. Let me give a little story about what an artist he is: For the cover of #1, he asked if he could draw Kendra with the helmet off. First, it was such awesome respect and courtesy to work with the writers to be asked, and thank you, sir! Second, I was psyched; thought it was a great idea and told him "it works out well, because she'll have learned about Speed's death and it would look kind of respectful". That's all I said; Steve took that little bit of info and look at her on the cover! The flower, the downcast head, somber face, all of that was Steve just running with it. And it's perfect. So thanks, Steve, and can't wait to get you back for #5 (or earlier if we're all lucky, but you get your money first and foremost!). Thanks for all the good words, and stick with us as we bring the Birds of Prey into contact with: Amethyst; Moondancers; the 100; Punch & Jewelee; and more! Take care Don

I want to add in my thanks, and more heaping praise on Steve for the cover =D I'm glad to hear what's working, especially claw - I like to think I'm pretty good at villains, and it's good to have the validation. Don's story outline for this is just so cool, and I'm really looking forward to bringing it to DC2. Most of what's being praised so strongly is Don's, really he's got the Onyx storyline so far, and that fantastic work with Zenobia, who I'm still loving seeing pop up in the series. Got to make sure to keep tabs on her. But I've had so much fun to do in issue 2, which is shaping up awesome, and I'm so glad to see issue 1 as a whole being so well-recieved. Thanks everyone!
