Here's the return of Planet DC2, courtesy of Brian Burchette, plus details of this week's new releases at DC2, DC3 and Independent Comics. Details of previous and future DC2 releases can be found on the calendar.
Welcome back to a long overdue issue of Planet DC2. We have a special treat for you. An exclusive interview with three of the four founders of DC2. David (Idlewilder) Charleton, Charlie (HouseofMystery) HoM, and Scott (Lantern Lad) Krueger. The fourth member, Brandon Herren was unavailable at the time.
Let me say it was a privilege to interview these men of vision in the world of fan fiction. I have had a chance to work with all four of them at one time or another; and it’s always an honor. So without further ado, here are three founders and their recollections of the DC2 and how it came to be. Enjoy!
DC2 Interview
[Planet DC2] hello gentlemen!
[Scott] Wow... I was unaware that an entire planet could fit in this room...
[Planet DC2] You'd be amazed what can fit in here.
[Charlie] sir...
[Scott] Good morning, or, afternoon, I suppose.
[David] Hey, Charlie, Scott,Brian!
[Planet DC2] did you want to start or wait a few more minutes for Brandon?
[Scott] You're the boss, boss...
[Scott] {Pulls up chair and sit up straight}
[Charlie] this is so crazy...
[David] {Sips tea}
[Planet DC2] So the first question is the most obvious one: how did DC2 originate?
[Charlie] Dave.
[Scott] David
[David] Well, it all started with me and Charlie
[David] Tell them about that RPG site, Chuck
[Charlie] Infinity's Hourglass, surely one of the worst run sites in the entirety of the internet?
[David] No doubt
[Scott] ... right next to Legends of the DCU
[Charlie] Haaaaa!
[David] It was a DCU RPG
[Charlie] Yeah, run by two guys. I have to admit, this was my first foray into the hobby, and I had no idea what the hell I was doing...
[David] Me, too
[David] Charlie and I met when I had killed the Atom and I was reprimanded for it.
[David] He PM'd me and told me he could show me a way out of it.
[Charlie] I was, what, 15?
[David] No, 14, I think. This was 2004
[Charlie] 14 then... christ.
[David] Anyway, Charlie and I met on the RPG site, and were having a cool little adventure called the "Apokolips Imperative" (which bears little resemblance to the IXE) when one of the co-founders of the site had a hissy fit and shut the whole thing down.
[Planet DC2] A hissy fit?
[Charlie] A hilarious hissy fit
[Charlie] Basically called us all bastards, and informed us he was going to walk underneath a bus
[David] Internet bully
[Scott] I wasn't part of the RPG... I came in later but I heard the stories!
[Charlie] This happened pretty suddenly, I think Dave will agree, and it didn't give us time to trade email addresses or anything. I remember being in a mad rush about things, posting messages on the DCMBs, really piffy stuff, "help, lost my idlewilder, last seen blah blah", and I think it was Susie that actually pointed me in the direction of a post Dave made. That’s my recollection of it, anyway.
[David] Actually, I started a creative writing site devoted to speculative fiction, called Neverwhere. Some RPGing there, too, but mostly writing.
[Charlie] That's where I met Mark Briggs
[David] When I was emailed by “The Powers that Be”, I discovered the old Legends site.
[Planet DC2] were you the only one involved with that writing site at the time?
[David] Charlie was there, and there were about a dozen regular members.
[Scott] I was there...
[David] Nothing too big
[Charlie] yeah, it was fantasy, wasn't it? Lovecraftian stuff, which put me on the track I’m on today... tsk.
[Scott] At Legends...
[David] Legends is where it all started
[David] Scott and I bonded over the Golden Age characters and a mutual love of the JSA. That's where the Legion Virus storyline began.
[Planet DC2] Scott, were you writing or drawing?
[Scott] Both... I just wanted to write a Green Lantern story that revolved around an “Ultimate” style Hal… because I didn’t think anyone would ever be able to bring him back from where he went. I did it as a script with page layouts and everything. I tried shopping it around at DC, but no one was biting.
[Planet DC2] wankers
[David] Ha! I didn't know that! Their loss! Coulda been a Year One!
[Scott] Well, they pulled it off better, so I humbly bow down to Geoff Johns.
[Planet DC2] So then here comes Dave and Charlie.
[David] I wanted to do a JSA title but The Powers that Be wouldn't let me until he debuted the JLA--- we were looking at two years!
[Charlie] yeah, which was ridiculous
[Scott] Yeah, TPTB’s great plan was taking forever, so, the site pretty much fell apart.
[David] He just wasn't the guy to get things done
[Planet DC2] So Dave, was it your idea then to create your guys' own site?
[David] We had all these artists showing up, like Brandon and Ramon, and no plan to take advantage of the writing/art synergy.
[Charlie] I remember Dave and I leaping on Ramón when we saw him post his work on legends, rushing to make sure he didn’t commit to the sinking ship.
[Planet DC2] Ahhh, so Brandon and Ramon enter the picture.
[David] TPTB and I got into a row over something, and I got banned.
[Charlie] Yeah, I remember that, he was a complete bastard over what he did.
[David] So I said: "I'm just going to do this bigger and better!" So I contacted Scotty, Brandon and Charlie and the DC2 was born in August of 2005! The central idea was to combine the fan fics with fan art.
[Scott] And the nuttiness began again for me...
[David] In earnest, you mean!
[Planet DC2] what made you go after them?
[David] Well, talent was a plus, but it was really just the willingness to commit to the vision of the site. We landed Ellen and Susan pretty quick. Ramon was an early joiner, and a few other artists who flaked out (yeah, I said it).
[Scott] It really just kind of came together pretty quick.
[David] Yeah, like it was meant to be.
[Planet DC2] So when you all decided to do this...
[Scott] We had a plan, and we communicated well together.
[David] We opened in September to a huge response! Roy and Brian were there at the beginning, first as super-fans, then staff.
[Planet DC2] ... did you each know specifically what you wanted to work on?
[David] I wanted to work on JSA, but that wasn't to be for... Well, I guess it was two years after all!
[Scott] Ha! Go figure...
[David] I wanted Charlie on Batman.
[Planet DC2] Excellent choice, I might add.
[Scott] I was in as long as I could do GL, but it required a MASSIVE rewrite.
[David] Yeah, you were a good sport, Scotty.
[Charlie] Still, we had different views on where to go, because I wanted to do a Year One approach, and the rest of the site was SIX YEAR LATER...
[Charlie] looking back on it now, it was probably a mistake, but I had a lot of fun on those earlier arcs, even though I can't even look at them today, haha
[Scott] Then David bullied me into LSH after my Superboy & the LSH story. I say bullied with love and a wink!
[David] Good stuff! That LSH was an unsolicited Opening Day surprise bonus.
[Planet DC2] the approach to Batman, as I remember, was pretty interesting, throwing the readers right into the middle of the fire.
[David] Tec or Batman?
[Planet DC2] I believe Tec.
[David] That was me.
[David] I am very proud of that opening arc.
[Charlie]Tthe Hugo Strange arc was brilliant.
[David] Kinda like RIP, except with Hugo Strange.
[Charlie]I was on Batman, going bat-shit on it with a whole lot of directions that I'm still tying up to this day.
[Planet DC2] so Scott...
[Scott] Yes?
[Planet DC2] Legion...
[Scott] No.
[David] Ha!
[Planet DC2] hahahaha
[Scott] Yes? <Groan>
[Planet DC2] This was something you hadn't really thought of doing until David asked?
[Scott] Yes. I did the one-shot which was originally a 3 issue mini series. And that was going to be it. But then he kept pestering me about it, and we all saw what came out of it. But I had a plan!
[Charlie] I think we all had a plan way back when...
[David] Scott and I still have plans for a Superman/Superboy run featuring the LSH--- if and when we ever find the hours in the day!
[Planet DC2] So let’s go back to those first few months when you opened, were you surprised at the response?
[David] Overwhelmed and gratified.
[Scott] I was still shocked at how quickly our membership grew!
[David] Met lots of folks who are still with us today.
[Scott] I still think Geoff Johns is one of our members. I see a lot of ideas of ours translated over into DC stories...
[Charlie] sneaky bastard that he is...
[David] Charlie did some promoting on the DCMBs, tangling with trolls. Remember Crunk?
[Charlie] Hahaha, remember when we were "all that was wrong with DCMBs"?
[Charlie] Good times, Dave...
[Planet DC2] Proudest moment in that first year?
[Charlie] Reaching the end of the first year and thriving into the second. Reaching the Apokolips Imperative and actually... having... an awesome end year celebration with that event.
[David] The IXE, without a doubt!
[Scott] Agreed... seeing everything that we started reach fruition... mind blowing!
[David] Huge accomplishment. Unheard of, really. I doubt the site could pull it off now, actually.
[Planet DC2] It was one helluva an event.
[Scott] We spent a lot of time on the phone together in preparation.
[Charlie] I think the reason we succeeded with the IXE was because originally there were, what, four, five writers writing the site?
[David] Something like that. The conference calls were critical!
[Planet DC2] organization was a key element for that!
[Charlie] Dave wrote a lot of the content, took a major hand in getting the story straight, and we had a lot of people willing to just throw themselves into it. It was fantastic.
[Scott] All I did was write GL, play cheerleader and help organize.
[Planet DC2] What, if anything, would you change about the IXE?
[Charlie] I would write my installments with the creative ability I have now, rather than then.
[David] Charlie was a work horse!
[Charlie] Though I am particularly proud of that moment Doomsday, unleashed by Darkseid, beats Superman to a pulp, only for the Man of Steel to rise out of the ground in AoS#10, and smile, ah, cheers, it was fun.
[David] My favorite issue: Action #8
[Charlie] Is that with Hal flying the helicopter?
[David] Yep.Plus the rescue of Superman from Apokolips
[Charlie] see, that's the thing with the IXE, there are moments that just STAY with us, and we're just this fan fiction site, we're not the real big bastards up there in NY or whatever
[David] Probably still my favorite scene I've written.
[Charlie] Captain Marvel Sr. whispering "SHAZAM" in the face of Darkseid.
[Scott] That was classic
[David] Telling Clark: "For all mankind..."
[Charlie] You can’t beat those kinds of moments. Had much more fun on this than I did on JLvsA.
[Scott] I probably wouldn't have really done anything different with the story. I probably would have liked the ability to continue on afterward. It was really my swan song on the site.
[Planet DC2] It was a tense and tightly-written epic, that's for sure. One last question for everyone. Three or four years later, what do you see as strengths and weaknesses of the site that you all created?
[Charlie] the community.
[David] Definitely the community. For both questions!
[Scott] The strength is definitely the community.
[Planet DC2] So do you see this continuing long after we are all gone?
[Scott] No... but I see it continuing for as long as people are willing to commit.
[Charlie] true
[David] Ditto.
[Planet DC2] so shall we end this on the word, Ditto?
[Scott] Ah... no? Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
[David] I was going to say, we need to find the Davids and Scotts and Charlies and Brandons of tomorrow. The Brians and Ramóns and Roys and Susans, et al
[Scott] That's a good one to end on.
[Planet DC2] We need to find the Brandon of today!
[Scott] LOL!
