John Byrne isn't too likeable as a person, but I have to admit, I enjoy his work from the 70s and 80s as artist and writer. I have Dark Phoenix Saga and Days of Future Past (co-written by Chris Claremont), VisionQuest (From Byrne's late 80s run on Avengers West Coast), and some of his run on Fantastic Four, all in trade paperback. Not just that, I have Man of Steel Volumes 1-4, collecting some of Byrne's late 80s work on Superman, and I want to get Volume 5 when it comes out. I hope that doesn't make me a hypocrite or nothing. I am well aware of Byrne's reputation these days, but it doesn't prevent me from enjoying his work from when he was at his best. I don't think it should. Those are great stories, and a couple of them are considered comic classics. I like to read them because they displayed the talent and imagination this man once had. Personally, I'd love to be able to have the creative talent Byrne once had with both the writing and the drawing, but I can't draw people too well.

His old stuff is class, pure class. I love Dark Phoenix, Mutant X, all that stuff (but I prefer Cockrum for some reason...) but his recent art 'attempts' have been overshadowed by an ego that just irritates me. Apologies to any Byrne lovers on site...

totally agree on his early stuff. Byrne and Clairmont along with Perez and Wolfman were my idols growing up, and I have still to find anyone that did the Fantastic Four any better then he did. It was his definitive work, in my opinion. I will give credit where credit is do. He was a master!

I like the music of Jim Morrison, but he used to slap his girl around when he got high. Nirvana is my favorite band ever, but Kurt Cobain was a guy who had a daughter and shot himself and there is nothing more dispecable.

If I was married to Courtney Love, I'd have checked myself into an asylum.
You know, half of a baby's genes each come from the mother and the father...I fear for Francis Bean.

Courtney is only bad half the time. She will be probably be a pretty talented kid. Selfish suicide aside he was a lyrical genius and a brilliant artist all around. Courtneys not completely awful, she did a great job in The People vs. Larry Flint and 200 Cigarettes and some of the music she made with Hole wasnt bad.

I saw it. Her own Dad blames her for his death. I don't buy any of it though, the guy had serious issues and being famous and all I am sure it would have been thuroughly investigated if there was any real doubt if for no other reason than a detective trying to make a name for himself.

I used to love Byrne's work, until he messed up the Vision. But then I liked his ideas for Superman, and the way he adjusted his past. However, once he started drawing Wonder Women, well, it wasn't his best work. I was especially upset since I really liked the artists who was drawing the comic before he took over, but I found out he started drawing Marvel comics later anyway. Now Byrne's only "wants" to work on his own comic, though I wonder if DC didn't want him to work on Wonder Woman anymore.

Perhaps this should be posted in a new thread, since it's not about Byrne, lol. It was somewhat confusing reading this in a Byrne thread.

John Byrne was my favorite artist growing up. I would draw and redraw from his work. This was of course in the 70's and 80's. He peaked in his Man of Steel days and has been sliding ever since. I think when he dropped using inkers and letterers he became to repetitive.
I think he is bitter that he never recieved the financial success the image boys did. His Next Men just blew chunks.
All said, We had a local radio show that said much the same thing. That people tuned in because of the danger, that he understood he was risking his life. You should be shocked when a guy like this dies anymore than a Dale Enhart. Would everyone be shocked if one of tge Jackass guys died from a stupid stunt. In the end he did stupid stunts with animals and died.
I didn't know a whole lot about him, but the hundreds of callers and emails let them know what this guy was about. Maybe byrne needs a number of people to call him out.

I liked NEXT MEN when it started. I thought the characters and premise was interesting but it just never delivered on that promise. I also thought DANGER UNLIMITED (is that the right name?), BABE, and TORCH OF LIBERTY were cool but they died too quickly to really get going. But pretty much everything since then has been shaky in my opinion. I can't help but wonder if Byrne had stuck with his creator-owned work instead of returning to the superhero mainstream how different the outcome it would have been.
I don't think it is really fair to compare Steve Irwin to the Jackass guys though. The Jackass crew are really a group of people with 13-year-old mentalities pulling daredevil stunts. Sorta on the same level with backyard wrestling but on a bigger scale.
Steve was highly knowledgable in his field with an almost lifetime of experience. He was a bit of a showman and played up what he was doing, and lead people to react something like "what in the holy heck is that idiot doing?!" But if you were to watch him for any amount of time you couldn't help but realize how intelligent, dedicated, and passionate the guy really was. And I don't think he died from a "stupid stunt" as much as it was a freak accident. His influence was vast and positive and I really hope that he remembered for the good work he did instead of the one or two blunders.

That is what I said. For those who don't know too much about Steve you just think he is a crazy guy with a chicken and a alligator. Those who really know what he is about let the radio show personalities know about it. Maybe large groups of emailers need to let John Byrne know what we think about Chris Revees and Steve. Not is an attacking way, but just like you described him.
