I have been waiting gleefully for this title to premiere (I haven't had a glimpse of it until now), as I am a big fan of zombie thrillers, and I have to say--- not only does this not disappoint, but this first issue was definately worth the wait!
That first scene is terrific, and grabs you by the throat immediately. Pure Romero! And the intensity is followed up in the second, though the mood is more Hammer films here--- I can just see Christopher Lee as the Pastor!
Nice to see Ted Kord and Bruce wayne in the same room--- although I never suspected it might come to blows.
Continuity error: the newspaper report cites a Police Comissioner Gordon--- when did this promotion occur? And later, he's referred to as Lt. and Comissioner in the same scene... Have I missed something?
I had to laugh when Crane called Batman an "ass clown". I'm not sure what that is, but it sure sounds funny!
The meeting between Batman and Blue Beetle was nicely done. Especially when Ted asks Bruce why he wasn't at the original Beetle's funeral.
Loved the cliffhanger ending, and the overall mystery that pervades the issue.
My only complaint, and this goes for a lot of stuff I've been seeing on the site, is the tense the story is written in. With very few exceptions, everything we write here should be in thrid-person, past tense (first person is acceptable, too, but more rarely, and with good reason). Part of the narrative is in present tense, switching to past almost in the same paragraph. It is very jarring, and can take the reader out of the story.
All-in-all, this was a great read, and left me wanting more! I'm on the edge of my seat until next week and the second issue!
Oh--- and I have to give a shout out to Roy for a brilliant cover!

I had the honour of seeing this book before it debuted, and yes, it is a great way to start a series! Way to go Chris, you've covered all the bases with this, the classy Romero-esque beginning with the low down on what was on the television, to the pounding lyrics of Manson to an overall great issue, driven by the characters of Bruce and Ted! Who's appearing next issue? Can't wait for it!!

I got to read some of this before it came out as well, so I was very excited to read the rest of it. Wow! Great job, Chris! This was a great read and the paceing was terrific. It never slowed down and held me right to the end.
My favorite moment was Batman and Alfred's exchange about the Bug. I laughed out loud.
I do have to agree with Dave about the Gordon stuff, but in the grand scheme of things, it was a small thing. Looking forward to the rest of it!
And I just want to add that the cover for this is knock out! Roy, you really out did yourself with this one! I tip my hat to you, sir!

Thanks, fellas. I started writing this back in March around the same time that I was finishing Blue Beetle. So, I hadnt yet caught up on all the DC2 titles. INcluding the batbooks. I did origanaly write Gordon as Commissioner at the time before reading more of the bat books here and realizing he wasn't the Commish yet. I thought I had changed that but I apperently missed a few here and there. I went back and I think they are all fixed now. As far as the tense, for some reason the writing just comes easier that way and I apoligize ahead of time but the rest of this series is written the same way, but I work very hard to keep it consistent.
Other than that I am glad you guys liked it. It's gonna get worse before it get's any better for these guys!
**I just reread it and I see it now, but I hadn't relized the tense shifted so much. I'll watch that closer from here on out.

This was something Chris realized at the last minute and I missed early on as well... I have to point out the fact that I screwed this one up. I edited the story and changed all the tenses but when I went back to change the Gordon from comish to Lt. I ended up using the unedited version of the story. First time editor mistake so please forgive me. I am sorry if this took anything away from the fantastic tale that Chris told. I promise that It won't happen again.

I've been hearing about this story for months, and my first gut reaction was, "This is gonna be silly." Having watched a good deal of horror movies, and being married a guy who is fanatical about "Night of the Living Dead", I've seen a lot of takes on the zombie genre, and I just didn't think this story was going to fly.
But so far, it's working. You seemed to have hooked into the one way to make a zombie plague work in the DCU (or DC2!), and I hope you can keep the momentum going. Only two complaints so far: Ted punching Bruce came off as forced, and why do we have Batgirl on the cover (which is great!) but not in the issue?
And lastly, a request: when Batgirl DOES appear, please find a way to work in the line, "They're coming ot get you, Barbara!" ;D

Thank you Susie! I am glad you gave it a try despite your misgivings. When I pitched the idea to Dave I had just finished watching Night of the Living Dead for the nine millionth time and then watched Batman Begins. I thought "Holy Crap you know what would be awesome!? " I PMed Dave and he said "Holy Crap that could be awesome" or something to that effect. So, I tried to come up with a good reason fro zombies to plague Gotham. I started thinking about all the zombie movies and the one thing they usually don't do is explain why it happened. I took that as the challenge and it has been challenging. I think it's all working out.
The covers aren't issue specific for this as they are homages to horror movies. Roy did this one as an ode to Jason Vorhees(and brilliantly I must add). The rest fo the cast will show up soon enough, though. And a face or two you may not be excpecting to see.

First off the cover is phenomenal. I could easily picture seeing it at the cinemaplex.
The story is a good mix of dread (the first scene, and the scenes with the boy) and mystery. I enjoy Batman in his detective mode, and pairing him up with the Beetle is a stroke of zonked genius. Who'd ever believe there'd be a time with those two working together?
I always look for little moments that stick with me and this issue has quite a few. "Ass clown." Alfred ribbing Bruce. Ted punching Bruce (though I agree with Susan that it may have been forced, but still entertaining). Batman getting even by punching Blue Beetle, and the Beetle discovering Batman's identity. Scenes like these give a story (and a writer) flavor and personality.
By looking at the cover and the cover credits it looks like some more favorites of mine are going to be appearing so bring on part two; I'll be reading.

Beetle and Bat are like peanut butter cups, two great tastes that are better together.
Loved everything about the story. It is rare when a writer hits every character right. Also great mix of horror, comedy, and mystery.

Ah, now that you mention it, the cover does look similar to "Jason X" (not a shabby movie despite the premise BTW -- hard to go wrong with Kane Hodder!). As for how you came up with the whole idea...don't you just LOVE moments like that? The right things come together at the right time and BANGO! There's a story! I don't know about nine million, but Jamin's seen LOTLD a helluva lot, plus we've met nearly everyone still living that's associated with the movie -- remind me to tell you the story of driving to Cleveland through lake-effect snow for a horror con sometime. Curious: who here reads Image's THE WALKING DEAD? Or MARVEL ZOMBIES? Robert Kirkman is great at this stuff!

I haven't read much by the way of actual zombie comics but not out of choice. I just haven't been buying comics fo r a long time. When I get started buying them again I will be picking up some trades for Walking Dea for sure. And as for driving through Cleveland in lake effect snow, tell me abbout it. I lived in Cleveland for 10 years and driving anywhere in that crap is a pain. But going to a horror con would be as good a reason as any.

This was a great debut issue of what is soon to be a DC2 classic!
As scary as it sounds, zombies just seem to be a perfect fit in Gotham City.
So many cool and creepy scenes it's hard to pick just one.
I will mention that I think Blue Beetle is a better fit here then he is over in the Powers title. I like it the way he is played off here as a competent and worthwhile partner with Batman.
Fantastic way to kick off this month long event with the best work you have ever done here Chris!
It has to be said that the cover is one of the coolest images ever seen on this site! Great work from Roy and everyone involved with putting it together.

I just finished reading the whole story, and all I can say is fantastic work. Extremely well written, great dialogue, and the thing is I believe each of the characters are who I know the mto be from DCU, but stillkeeping up with DC2 continuity. Fantastic issue man, I loved it, can't wait to read the next issue.

Many thanks for featuring us, Brawl. FYI If the colours do disturb you, you can select some other combination using the Select Skin option on your Modify Profile page, or just do what I do and click on the Print option on the top right of the thread, which doesn't actually print the page but shows it in a more printer-friendly, and reader-friendly, format.
