Ok so a few years back I did one of these clean out your life things. I was not focusing enough upon things that mattered to me (primarily God-take it or leave it Im not asking you to concede as the wisdom of that decision lol) but this meant I got read of the one thing that became this kind of idol in my life. Comics. So for the last few years I havent really bought any and have got my fixes from previews online and have been becoming more wise and eclectic with my tastes so that I savour the medium and dont just read any old tosh (how British-tosh!)
So here is the thing. Im rebuilding. I enjoy comics and am now more mature with money and time to collect and not get over obssessed. I want to be healthy and so whatever-Im buying again. But only trades and only collection that a.) I enjoy and b.) I can lend to friends wanting to get into comics.
So Im buying stuff I love but that is also new reader friendly. Most of my mates love comic book films and those who own a comic or two come to me to ask if I have anything worth reading (I hung onto a few things Ultimates and Ultimates 2 and Long Halloween.)
Ive picked up a few things recently. I bought Busiek and Ross' MARVELS which I only read myself recently and think is ideal for condenscing the major points of 70 years worth of continuity into a very short but masterful volume.
Next I collected all the Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-men and Ultimate Fantastic Four that I believe to be worth while (good stories and art). So most of Spidey, less of X-men and only two volumes of FF. Im aslo getting Ultimate Daredevil and Elektra and Ultimate Elektra.
I bought Extremis as this is pretty much a perfect jumpin on point and a good contained read and people are now familiar with Iron Man enough to be interested. Im also grabbing FF World's Greatest as my ex wants to get into comics and she loves Spidey and the FF and to me World's Greatest is classic FF-classic character, team and family unity/discord, time travel, dimension hopping etc.
I also got Wolverine Origins which I love, as well as Batman Year One and Dark Victory (to complete the set I began with long Halloween).
Also I am one of the few people that likes were Marvel took its universe this century so for my mates that really get into it I wanna say "ok here is a few years worth of interconnected stories."
Im picking up
Avengers Disassembled
New Avengers vol. 1
-The Sentry mini from 2003-
House of M
HoM: Disassembled One Shot
Winter Soldier parts 1 and 2
Young Avengers 1 and 2
Civil War
Civil War: Casualties of War- Iron Man/Captain America
Death of Captain America/Fallen Son
Secret Warriors volume 1
Thor vol 1 (the Straczynski rebrith stuff)
Secret Invasion
Dark Avengers vol 1
Captain America: Reborn
Seige
New Avengers: Finale
Also Astonishing X-men volume 1 (Whedon's run)
Utopia X (which I enjoy)
-possibly the Children of the Atom mini and maybe E is for Extinction or one of those early New X-men arcs- a sort of romp through X-men history.
Ok so there we are. Ive got some Ultimate stuff thats fun and new ready friendly. Some story arcs for classic characters include tight, well put together stories and glances back into their past and Ive got a big coherent run telling you all you need to know about the characters cropping up.
Now why am I telling you all this? It's simple: I need help.
As you may of noticed there is one character lacking in my collection (in terms of his own books/arcs) and that is Marvel's masthead character. Where is all my Spidey?!?!
I love Spidey. You cannot beat him. Love him. But my problem is I want stories that can allude to the characters roots (like in Extremis) can tell a tight, hard hitting, emotional, impactive story (like Extremis) but are not so radically altering canon that it may be hard for a new reader to fully appreciate the core of that character (not like Extremis. With Extremis it is eased in but Spidey needs to be kinda timeless.)
Problem is lately Marvel has been toying with Spidey's status quo a lot. Do I get the arcs with Ezekiel? Good jumping on points sure but your hit instantly with the 'your powers could be magic?' where is the impact for a new reader who hasn't assumed for years and years that its pure science. And the Other just takes that problem another step further. Im thinking some arcs in which he moves into Stark Towers and gets the Iron Spider suit might be nessecary if Im picking in Civil War and New Avengers but its getting tricky.
I want modern comics with good writers who get the character and great artisits who bring it alive. Modern comics are the best way to introduce my particular friends and Im struggling with one of my all time fav characters. How do you pin him down. Im thinking maybe the Sins of the Father arc but there needs to be more than that.
3 good arcs that you recommend please and prefferably single knit stories not loosely tied single issues gathered in a volume. Your my go to guys for geekiness so please help me out. Much abligied.
And yes this is all costing me a bomb lol
