The first DC2 issue I read was Green Lantern. The second was New Outsiders. Inspired by the fresh look the Green Lantern costumes had, I thought it would be fun to push the Outsider costumes away from the traditional DC look into something inspired by the essence of the characters: - Batgirl, a disciple of Batman, covered in latex and mysterious - Zatanna, stage magician but with a stronger witch influence - Huntress, child of Las Vegas' dirty underside; part hooker part vigilante I composed the image from a bunch of clip art pieces and then customized to fit the ladies.

Question... Did you draw these yourself? Because you have a very interesting and cool style... Nice use of the two colours you've used, and it's created a very striking image. Got anymore?

I absolutely love this! I think your re-imagining of the characters is inspired and very appropriate, and if the new writer of the New Outsiders is amenable, I would like to incorporate your designs into DC2 continuity (so whaddya say, Starlord?). Melriks! I am impressed! Why aren't you on staff here?

Super nice work, melriks!
I think since Zatanna's a stage performer she could certainly have more than one costume. I could maybe see Huntress's costume as more a combo of the other two, but could absolutely see this as a common undercover look. For Batgirl, very nice incorporation of a more dangerous and, uh, dominant look. ;D Nice use of more real world clothing aspects to make it fit better with the title's themes. Not so sure about the platforms tough. This design coupled with Scott's awesome work would make for a very cool look. Just my opinion, but ultimately this is up to David and Brian if they want to fully incorporate these designs.
Again, awesome pic and very nice design work! Composed very nicely and it reminds me at once of a fashion industry style and also of a silkscreen artist look. Very cool. I'm curious how much of this you did and how much was in the original clip art, or how easy is it for you to put together pics like this?
Can't wait to see more!

I personally do think that the Bat symbol must be in the centre of Batgirls costume, but apart from that, those designs could be incorporated into our continuity...

I love it! I have no problem incorporating this at all. I'm assuming that the artists working on the covers will have to be aware of this as well (and I'm sure they will be). The only thing for me personally that I am going back and forth on is the bat. I kind of agree with HoM on that one, but the outfit works so well that I have no problem bowing to popular opinion on this. I'm in Idle, let's do it. Looks like Ollie is taking his girls on a little shopping spree. Great, great work!!! Now can you show us something for our resident "pretty bird". Hate for her to miss out.

Thanks for all the kind words everybody. Answers to questions so far...
- Style: The style comes mostly from the clip art I use to compose the images so I can't lay claim to it. It's a drawing style that works really well with Adobe Illustrator.
- Clip Art versus Original: It's a 70/30 relationship. I start out with a general sketch of my composition (my pencil drawing) and photos from the web (for clothing/hair styles). Then I find generic people clip art that's merged together to compose the elements of my sketch. Once I have my sketch roughed in with the clip art pieces, I customize (ie. there wasn't a woman in a hooker costume holding a shotgun, but there was a woman with a bent leg, a shotgun, and a brunette with long hair.)
- Time: This was my first composition so three/four hours; however, I have wife/kids/dog/work/school/house remodeling that all come first so those hours weren't all continuous.
- Bat symbol: If it sways any opinions, I saw the symbol like a policeman's badge. It's her authority to stop crime.
- Black Canary: I have all the images collected for her, but didn't incorporate into this picture. I'll see if I can get a sketch up in the coming weeks.
Happy Holidays.

The ONLY thing I see that could be a problem is Batgirls stiletto heels...

Well unless anyone has a really big objection or reason not to change the bat insignia to the side, I say let's do that too. Change is a good thing.
