Well, to be honest, the violence didn't work for me at all. I was expecting Joker and Harley, and it felt more like Mickey and Mallory (with a little bit of EC thrown in). Plus, Batman stamping on a woman's face doesn't really tie in with the way I see the character. The rest of the story was fine and would have got 4 stars from me, but for the violence (which seemed completely out of place in an all-ages title and, to tell the truth, I'd actually got bored with it by the end).

There was some really great stuff here. Of course I loved the fact that Charlie picked up on Penguin's little comment at the end of the cross-over. Actually great continuity comments spread all through this issue.
Also love the developing relationship between Bruce and Vickie. Perhaps we are seeing the next Clark and Lois in the making?
I do have to admit that it was a tad bloodier then I like to read in the mainstream books, but Charlie always pushes the envelope, so it wasn't shocking in the least.

Harley! *huggles Harley and then runs for his life before Joker can catch him.* I'll agree with Joker on this much; Harley IS a hot piece of.....*keeps running*
I agree that the use of Penguin was clever.
I will say that while I didn't enjoy the blood either, it was entirely in character for the Joker.

I guess I am a bit bias, being the book's editor, but the violence did not bother me because its the Joker. The Joker is not funny. His name is ironic. He has to be scary as hell. You have to know that when he shows up, the body count starts climbing. I realize that Batman stomping on Harley was a tad extreme but a) Bats isn't a snuggy bear, and b) given what the Joker has cost Batman personal, it is understandable that Bats would loose it a bit.
This is also, by the way, why the Joker cannot and should not appear regularly. He is too insane and too violent and too scary to use every month.
That said, I can see why the story wouldn't be to some tastes, but I think the violence and the anguish of Batman in particular were in a good balance that worked.

The rest of the story was fine and would have got 4 stars from me, but for the violence (which seemed completely out of place in an all-ages title and, to tell the truth, I'd actually got bored with it by the end). My bad. I came at this with the aim to tell a bloody story without being overtly bloody. Yes, there was violence, and suggested gore and torture, but... I don't think it was as graphic sa it could have been. And Batman stomping on Harley's face? Come on, I don't see anything wrong with that. What if he stomped on the Joker's face? You wouldn't be complaining then. You're all so sexist! (that was a joke, don't flame me) There was some really great stuff here. I didn't want to go out with a fizzle, and I didn't want to go out on some random sequiter that had nothing to do with what came before. I could have continued with the Talia Head storyline, but then you'd have to wait for that to be resolved (Check out Detective Comics #21, the beginning of a big story arc, tentatively titled " Age of Fear"), so instead I do what I always (here's me, saying always like I've been doing this for years) do before a CRISIS looms. I wrote a Joker story. I did it last year (and it was just as hard then!) and I did it now. And I've wanted to write the Penguin ever since Brian made him cool! And here was my chance. Less of a caricature, more of a sinister business man, and that parting line from Ozzie in Detective Comics #16? I had to pick up on it. Loved that. Everyone should be reading Detective Comics! Harley! *huggles Harley and then runs for his life before Joker can catch him.* I'll agree with Joker on this much; Harley IS a hot piece of.....*keeps running* I agree that the use of Penguin was clever. I will say that while I didn't enjoy the blood either, it was entirely in character for the Joker. Thanks for reading Jay! I can't wait to read your Catwoman arc! Yes, following me up before the IXXE and new ongoing writing Grant LaFleche arrives, is Jay McIntyre with what promises to be an awesome story arc with everyones favourite feline femme fatale! I guess I am a bit bias, being the book's editor, but the violence did not bother me because its the Joker. The Joker is not funny. His name is ironic. He has to be scary as hell. That said, I can see why the story wouldn't be to some tastes, but I think the violence and the anguish of Batman in particular were in a good balance that worked. Here's where we disagree Grant! I think the Joker IS funny, in a weird, ironic, sometimes laugh out loud way, but yes, he's a homicidal maniac, and we shouldn't forget that. Yes, he's ironic, he's weird, he's a murderer, but he also fancies himself a clown and a comedian, or does he? You don't know. You can't tell. And I love him for it Anyway, thanks guys for reading! I'll see you next month... Over in Action Comics!

Another awesome issue you've written - even if you do hate going back to them. Personally I cant wait to catch up, if only to see how much you've improved! Loved the Joker an Harley!
