December 31st, 3005; 11:55pm, Earth (Metropolis) Standard time
Since the inception of the United Planets, Earth had been declared the capital planet, and many of the colony worlds whose majority populace were human, adopted Earths measurements of time…
Mars Colony, a series of four large domes connected by a series of mass transit subway systems, had opened at the turn of the Century. It was the largest colony built on Mars in over 500 years. Dome Alpha was the Corporate Sector, roughly half the size of Metropolis. Dome Beta was mostly industrial-based, Dome Gamma was built for leisure, housing vacation spots, retail shopping and amusement parks. Both Dome Alpha and Dome Beta were, for the most part, closed for New Year’s, with the majority of the populace either home for the holidays or at their favorite vacation spot. Dome Delta, the largest in diameter of the four, was the residential sector, housing over 3 million citizens of the United Planets.
Despite its enormous size, Dome Delta was the perfect community. Under its artificial gravity and weather were rows of perfectly built homes with immaculate lawns and huge trees. Birds sang during the ‘daylight’ hours, crickets chirped during the ‘nighttime’. As impossible as it seemed, Dome Delta retained a small-town feel not seen on Earth since the 23rd Century.
Tinya Wazzo, Phantom Girl from the Legion of Super-Heroes, had come to Dome Delta with her mother, Ambassador Winema Wazzo, to stay at their family retreat. Winema had purchased the largest estate in the dome in an attempt to get away from the hustle and bustle of Metropolis. She had become a local celebrity, whose popularity had tripled since her daughter’s acceptance into the Legion.
This night, the Bgztlian pair left the comfort of their estate to join the masses in celebration. The dark-cloaked pair kept to themselves as they entered Tranquility Park.
At Tranquility Park, in the center of Dome Delta, the populace of the three domes partied the night away in anticipation of the new year. A giant holo-screen above beamed images in real-time from Metropolis’ Centennial Park on Earth to Mars.
{“Hi! This is Laurel Kent, Daily Planet News reporting from Centennial Park, Earth!”} the reporter bellowed into her microphone attempting to out-shout the Earth-bound party-goers. {“Joining me here are Rene Jacques Brande and the two founding members of the Legion of Super-Heroes! Sixteen-year-olds Cosmic Boy and Lightning Lad!”}
The crowd gathered at both Centennial Park on Earth and Tranquility Park on Mars cheered even louder at the sight of the Legionnaires. Since their inception two years earlier the Legion of Super-Heroes had become a household name. Cosmic Boy and Lightning Lad in particular. Boys longed to be them, girls longed to date them, and children owned every ‘action figure’.
Tinya glanced at her mother who held her stony gaze at the monitor. Tinya just pulled her hood lower to hide her identity from those gathered around.
{“At the one minute countdown mark, Cosmic Boy will begin to lift the giant steel ball to a height of one hundred feet above Brande Tower, where, at the stroke of midnight, Lightning Lad will ignite the super-conductive ball with his lightning!”} the reporter added. {“Okay! Now with less than 30 seconds remaining before the one minute countdown the Legionnaires have taken position!”}
The crowd in Dome Delta prepared themselves for the stroke of midnight, gathering their loved ones close for the time honored New Year’s kiss. Children sitting on their parents’ shoulders spinned their noisemakers and blew on their New Year’s horns. Some shot off small boomer crackers. Security officers lined the perimeter in case the crowd got out of hand, but over the years, none ever had reason to draw a baton or take any action at all. Many, in fact had joined in with the celebration.
As the countdown commenced the crowd became louder and louder, chanting the numbers along with Laurel Kent, and watching as their heroes used their amazing powers for sheer entertainment. Cosmic Boy stood firmly with his feet planted on the ground, his hands raised as his invisible magnetic power lifted the massive ball into place.

The crowd danced and cheered thinking of the coming possibilities that a New Year could bring. Using his amazing Legion flight ring, Lightning Lad hovered in the sky above Brande Tower waiting for the signal when he would unleash a full salvo of lightning into the ball.

Ambassador Wazzo placed her hand on Tinya’s shoulder and smiled gently to her daughter. Tinya returned the smile, squeezing her mother’s hand.

BA-BOOM!!!
Several explosions tore the foundation of the dome apart. As the dome separated, cracks formed in the transparisteel until it shattered from the strain, blowing its shards outward into the Martian atmosphere. In an instant the atmosphere inside the dome was vented into space and the toxic atmosphere of Mars rushed in. The backup force field generators, created by McCauley Enterprises, built for just that type of emergency, failed to start. Heavy pieces of debris caught by the artificial gravity inducers plummeted into the city, smashing homes and crushing innocent bystanders.
Tinya and her mother instantly went into action phasing slightly into their own dimension in order to stay alive. Both women rushed to the aid of as many as they could but were only able to phase a few people before the strain became too much. Tinya and her mother tried to communicate with each other , but without the atmosphere neither could hear the other.
None of the adults were pulled out of the dome from the lighter gravity of the red planet, though many children were lost by those means. Those that didn’t die quickly, slowly suffocated while trying to escape.
There were no screams after the first minute as the red Martian dust began to coat them.
Within the first 3 minutes of the new year, 2,963,287 citizens of the United Planets, who’d been living on the Mars colony, were dead.
Due to the efforts of the Wazzos, nine survived.

The next day:
When news of the disaster reached the Legion Watchtower in Metropolis, Cosmic Boy immediately left for Mars with Blok in tow. When they arrived, Cos and Blok found Tinya and Winema, with the nine survivors, still slightly phased out of reality. Had it been just them, the Wazzos would have phased into their own dimension, but outsiders could not survive in Bgztl.
Cosmic Boy and Blok moved the survivors into their Legion cruiser until relief could arrive. Despite her arguments to the contrary, Cos forced a sedative on Tinya so she would rest.
For several hours Cos and Blok dug through the rubble on opposite sides of the dome searching for something… for anything. Cos wore a trans-suit to protect him from the harsh Martian elements. Blok, a native of Dryad, was made entirely of stone and had no need for a trans-suit. Both wore Legion flight rings, designed by Legion reserve member Invisible Kid, which enabled not only flight, but communication.
Science Police investigators and emergency crews arrived on the scene shortly thereafter. All waded through the destruction looking for clues into the cause of the destruction. Hundreds of corpses had been removed, but the job was far from complete. The bodies had been covered in a thick layer of red Martian dust making the scene eerier and that much more difficult to recover the deceased.
A Legion cruiser broke through the Martian atmosphere and circled low, just above the remains of the Dome Delta.
“Hey Cos, backups here,” Blok said into his flight ring.
{“Copy that Blok… Have Garth meet me on the East side… Keep Polar Boy with you. Have him break up some of the larger debris! Maybe it will move this along faster,”} Cosmic Boy replied.
“Got it, Boss!” Blok acknowledged.
The cruiser touched down just outside the west end of the dome near Blok. After a moment, Lightning Lad and Polar Boy disembarked, making their way towards Blok. They were stunned into silence from the sight at ground level.
“Blok.” Lightning Lad nodded to his teammate, disturbing the eerie quiet.
“Hiya, guys…” Blok greeted the Legionnaires, his normal saddened tone was even more sorrowful than usual. He attempted to lighten the mood, patting Polar Boy on the shoulder. “Yer with me, Snowball! LL, Cos wants ya with him… East side.”
Polar Boy nodded solemnly and began freezing large pieces of debris, which Blok quickly smashed into smaller pieces. Lightning Lad made his way toward Cosmic Boy.
He gasped at the sight below as he flew over the rust-colored field of bodies; arms, legs and heads exposed through inches of gathered Martian dust. It was one thing to see the death from the cruiser through a view screen, it was another to be just a few feet above it. A tear crept down his cheek, sizzling on his electrified skin.
He landed a few feet from Cosmic Boy.
“Any idea how this happened Cos?” Lightning Lad asked, an obvious edge of anger in his voice.
“Not yet. But I was hoping I could get you in there with the Science Police to see if you can help them out with the investigation.”
“I was wondering why you asked me to come… not much use for a guy that shoots lightning bolts in a recovery operation,” Lightning Lad admitted. “I’ll see what I can find out.”
“Shvaughn’s in there running the investigation,” Cos added, to which Lightning Lad saluted an acknowledgement.
As Lightning Lad quickly flew away, a gentle hand touched Cos’s shoulder. He turned to see the tear-streaked face of Phantom Girl.
“Tinya, you should be resting…” She silenced him by collapsing into his arms, sobbing. When she caught her breath she looked up into his eyes and kissed him softly before breaking down once again.
“I couldn’t save them. I’m sorry Rokk…” She sniffed, wiping away tears. “The children…”
“I know Tinya, you need your rest… you kept five of them alive by yourself.”
She looked up at him angrily and pushed away from his embrace.
“It wasn’t enough.” she said as she floated away from him toward the center of the debris field.
Cos knew that no matter how many she had saved, if one life had been lost she’d still carry the burden of guilt.
“Tinya,” he called out after her, “there’s nothing more you could have done!”
“You don’t know what it was like, Rokk! We were phased… we saw their spirits leaving their bodies. They begged us to help them, and all we could do was look away. I’ll carry their faces with me for the rest of my life. I’m done resting; I need to be out here helping.”
Cos quietly conceded defeat in the argument.
“I need you to phase through the debris… look for anything suspicious. If you find anything, let me know. Don’t move it… I’ll use my power to lift anything covering it. We can’t risk damaging any possible evidence or setting off any undetonated explosives.”
She nodded and drifted through a solid mass of steel.

The Legion Clubhouse, Metropolis
Monitor duty sucked.
He hadn’t done anything to deserve it… this time. And even that was Brek’s fault… not his! It was a dare!
Sun Boy sat at the Mission Monitor Board keeping tabs on all activities the Legion were currently involved in, and since every active member aside from he and Vi were on Mars, that amounted to a whole lot of nothing. He couldn’t really watch the monitor though. Most of his macho attitude just covered up the truth, he was just a teenage boy and death scared the hell out of him.
He wished at least he was there on Mars with them… then he could help.
OK, so there isn’t really that much a guy that creates extreme heat and light could do in a recovery operation, but still, it beat monitor duty!
With only two monitors currently monitoring all the Legionnaires… that left the other twenty-eight monitors for other things.
He switched a few monitors on and set the stations to the All Magno-Ball channel, and the Magno-Ball Cheerleader Channel. Gods bless the being that thought of that one! Dirk thought.
He leaned back in his chair and took in the sights when suddenly all 28 non-Legionnaire watching monitors cut off with breaking news.
A very solemn-looking reporter appeared on the screen. She was slightly disheveled, with bags under her eyes and black streaks staining her cheeks. Yikes, she’s looked better.
{“Good evening. Laurel Kent reporting for the Daily Planet with breaking news. We, at the Daily Planet, have received a very disturbing holo, which we will now play for you in its entirety. We warn you, some of the images you are about to see are graphic and not suitable for children.”}
The screen changed to show a masked figure from the neck up. The mask was black, form-fitting and featureless, with a small gray circle on the forehead.
{“We have stood by and watched idly for too long…”} The masked being was female, and spoke with a determined tone. Her Interlac accent was Earthen. {“What we are about to do is not an act of terror, but an act of patriotism! The United Planets is diseased!”} The figure knelt down, showing her full figure. She stood on a solid surface. The camera that recorded her message lifted off from ground level, slowly revealing Mars Dome Delta.
“Dirk, what the hell is going on?” Shrinking Violet asked, running into the Monitor room. “All the monitors in the Clubhouse are on!” Sun Boy held up a silencing hand and watched helplessly, knowing he was seeing images recorded the day before.
{“We will purge the United Planets of evil!”} The woman exploded, setting off a chain reaction of other explosions around the dome.
Dirk leaned forward in his chair, covering his mouth in horror as the smashed dome collapsed inward. The oxygen from inside the dome was visibly vented into space along with smaller objects. Dirk forced the bile down when he realized they were beings… children.
“My Gods…” Vi whispered to herself, covering her mouth.
The scene was replaced by the image of another masked being, this one with a large gray circle encompassing the entire face of a loose-fitting hood.
{“You see here what we are capable of.”} The masked man spoke in a deep hypnotically baritone voice. {“We will strike again unless the governing body of the United Planets step down and their puppet masters reveal themselves to the Universe!”}
The screen cut back to the clearly distraught reporter. She struggled to regain her composure.
{“We have no idea who this group is claiming responsibility...”} Laurel paused to clear her throat. {“I… we’ll be back.”} The screen went dark.
Sun Boy activated the communication system on the Monitor Board. “Cos.. Ahem…” Dirk cleared his throat, choking back tears, “Cos, this is Dirk…”

Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, Polar Boy, Blok and Phantom Girl stood in a makeshift briefing room in the Brande Industries building located inside of Mars Dome Alpha. The main conference room had been commandeered by the Science Police Lieutenant Shvaughn Erin. Around the room, monitors replayed in slow motion the ‘Patriot’s’ message as Science Police Investigators watched.
Cos had already watched the message four times on the holo-projector within his flight ring. He hoped that watching the scene over and over again would make it easier to handle… or give up some clue as to who was behind it all. So far, it had not… and seeing it in slow motion did nothing to help either.
“Since the residue found at the scene by Phantom Girl is of unknown origin, it has been routed to Colu for further analysis,” Lt. Erin concluded in her report to Chief Kimball Zendak back on Earth.
{“Acknowledged. The President is screaming for answers, I’ll inform him of everything you’ve found. I want hourly updates on everything, Lt. Erin,”} Chief Zendak ordered.
“Understood, sir,” she replied as the screen went dark.
Lt. Erin turned her attention back to Cos. “We’re speaking with the survivors to see if any of them may have any information. Maybe someone witnessed something suspicious… It would be easier if Saturn Girl were here.” Just hearing her name again forced a wince out of Lightning Lad.
“Unfortunately, that’s not possible,” Cosmic Boy said after stealing a glance at his second-in-command.
“I know, Rokk…” Shvaughn replied, “it’s just frustrating. The worst act of terrorism since 2652, and we’re not even sure who is responsible. It‘s not like we‘re going to find any survivors buried under all that rubble and dirt. I have to keep trying…”
Cosmic Boy sat down at the table in the center of the room. He gazed again at the image of the hooded man from the end of the tape.
“What do you suppose he means by the United Planets puppet masters?” Phantom Girl asked as she sat at the table across from Rokk. She had not spoken to him since her outburst earlier; her voice sounded hollow.
“Got me… I don’t trust or like President Touronis, or VP McCauley, for that matter. But this goes far beyond a simple protest,” Lightning Lad replied.
“I‘ve been wearing the ‘Impeach Touronis‘ buttons for years, but no one ever took me seriously,” Polar Boy added.
The slap to the back of his head came from Blok, and would have knocked him unconscious had he not anticipated it. “That‘s not funny, Frostbite.”
Phantom Girl glared at Polar Boy. He stared down at his boots in silence, rubbing the lump that formed on the back of his head.
“As ambassador to the United Planets from Bgztl,” Winema Wazzo spoke for the first time since before the incident, “I have greater access to government officials and information. Though I haven’t witnessed any corruption first hand, I do know that there are things that happen behind closed doors that seem… strange.”
“Are you saying that you believe the allegation of these terrorists?” Shvaughn asked shocked.
“Not necessarily. I’m just saying that it may warrant further investigation.” She straightened up. Like her daughter, her voice had a slight quiver to it.
“It’s the government, what do you expect?” Polar Boy said again breaking his self-imposed vow of silence bringing on another slap to the back of the head from Blok.
“Ow! Hey, enough with the slapping!”
Silence fell over the gathered group.
“What do you think, Cos?” Lightning Lad asked their leader.
“I don’t know what to think…” Cos paused as the monitor showed bodies floating from the ruined dome. Thoughts began to filter into his head. He had seen it as well, over the years since his arrival on Earth. The Governmental affairs rarely made sense to him, and he was always happy that the Legion worked separately from them. But regardless of how bad a Government acted, to take action against the civilian populace was inexcusable. Nearly three million people died due to these so-called ‘patriots’… the girl he cared deeply for was almost one of them.
“Cos?” Polar Boy asked, finally breaking the silence.
“I…” Cos began, but was interrupted as the large screen monitor sparked back to life with a close up of Chief Zendak’s face.
{“There’s another attack underway at this very moment!”} he said urgently to all those gathered. {“The planet Colu! All units, proceed with extreme haste!”}
The monitor went dark and the room sprang into action. The SP officers gathered their gear and headed for their transport. Lightning Lad, Blok, Phantom Girl and Polar Boy shot out of the room for one of the two Legion cruisers. Cosmic Boy hung back for a moment with the Ambassador… his thoughts racing.
“Why Colu?” he asked himself out loud.
“Isn’t it obvious?” the Ambassador answered. “Select few knew that the evidence gathered here was sent to Colu for analysis. The Legion, the SP and the office of the President.”
“So, not only is the Government possibly corrupt… they most likely have a mole in the President’s office working with the terrorists,” Cos deduced.
A transmission from Lightning Lad came through on Cos’s flight ring. {“Cos! We’re waiting on you! What’s the hold up?”}
Cosmic Boy looked outside and saw several SP ships shooting out of the atmosphere. “On my way,” he replied. “Ambassador I may need your assistance when the time comes…”
“I understand and I will do anything in my power to help.”
“Thank you, ambassador.” Cos flew from the room at top speed to the waiting cruiser.
Ambassador Wazzo stared out of the window as the Legion cruiser shot free of the Martian atmosphere.
“Fool.”
