Yay yay yay Werid War Tales is finally here! How long has it been since you had me read the first draft of this? At least a year, I think. It's even better now with the added stuff (Creature Commandos! Sgt. Rock! Blackhawk Squadron! And was that the freakin' Hangman?!?). I swear, I don't know how much time you spend on research, but it shows, my friend. This is better than watching the History Channel! Only question now is: how do all these guys tie together?

This was soooooo good. I honestly felt like I was reading a professional novel by a writer that spent years in research! I love this era, and seeing my favorite war heroes in action again was a thrill, especially Jeb Stuart and ROCK, yes! Can we have some Losers, too?
Love the occult thriller aspect, too! I will definitely be following this book! I am in awe

This whole thing was originally a pitch for the defunct DC2 Spotlight title so I've had some time to work on it since then. Yep that's the Hangman and I spend a lot of time in research. It'll be my downfall one of these days but I can't stand historical mistakes when I read books so I try to make sure that I don't make them. And my TV spends a LOT of time on both the History Channel and the Military Channel. Ah, but that would be telling. ;D Things will start to make more sense with the second issue. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, Susan! I'll be interested to see your reaction to the second issue when things start to heat up.

I will definitely be following this book! I am in awe Thanks, Jon! I am a professional writer but not in fiction. I've had a few articles published in library journals and, in non-serious things, roleplaying game books. I'm working on a novel (who isn't?) so hopefully I can say "yes" to fiction as well one of these days. Sadly, no Losers this time around. I'm already hitting a lot of characters but I do dearly love those guys (especially Sarge, Gunner and Pooch). I'm not done with Frank and our future DC2 President hasn't seen the end of his adventures. I've got ideas for him that will extend out past the war. Thanks for joining me on the ride and I hope you have as much fun reading it as I did beating my head against the wall coming up with this crazy story. And you're in for one heck of a time with issue two!

On a semi-related note, I picked up DC Universe Legacies #4 today, and the backup story with all the old WWII heroes made me choke up a bit (if you haven't read it yet, I won't tell you why). And before you ask, James...yes, Gunner and Sarge are in it!

Fantastic issue, James! This wasn't just an exciting tale of men- (and women-) at-war, but spiced up with occult thrills and pulp-comic fun. Feels like you packed more in per page than any everday issue of fanfiction... Blackhawks, Rock and Easy Co., Creature Commandos (Yes!), Haunted Tank... and Doctor Fate, even! As ever you are a master of Earth-One continuity, referencing events of Danger Trail and JSA (and probably other books I didn't catch). Those little Easter Eggs are awesome for those in the know and add depth for newcomers. This was an easy read (for all that it was a weird war tale !) and I was left hanging at the end wanting more. Definately be back next issue. Question: I'm not too up on the character or her backstory, but given her inner monologue, I wonder if Nimue won't turn out to be Madame Xanadu...? Loved her offhand recollection of Felix Faust and musings on Merlin! Question 2: Did the time frame jump from the prologue, or is my (no means expert) knowledge of the time period off: were there Allied tanks operating in France prior to D-Day? Nitpick: Nabu is mispelled as Namu in that one scene in Limbo, and you have Alexander of Macedon wearing a toga, a distinctly Roman garment he probably would not have one in his closet--- a chiton (tunic) might fit him better. Or knowing Alexander, Egyptian or Persian robes would not necessarily be out of place, either! Nitpicks aside, they did not detract from a real enjoyable experience! This was a five star issue! That cover is beautiful, too! I really love you collage-ish covers, and this one fit together as if you wrote the issue around it and not vice-versa. Perfect!

Loved her offhand recollection of Felix Faust and musings on Merlin! Nimue is indeed the woman who will become Madame Xanadu. Good catch there, Dave Nope. There is a time jump from the prologue to 1944. I forgot to put that in. I'll fix that. Bleh. Reference my earlier comment about bad history and I've just been caught in one of my own. I can only plead my poor knowledge of Roman history. Thanks for that suggestion, Dave. I'll change that typo and his clothing choice! Thanks! I hope you enjoy the second issue just as much!
