Two more issues of Justice League after this one, and then we're in an interesting position for the future...
But until then, please let me know what you thought of this issue!

I started #81 as soon as I finished #80. This feels like a transitional issue (but not in a bad way). Guardian's conversation with the Joker was fascinating. I really like his motivation and his decision to pull the triger, but I'm worried that he was so ready to turn on his peers. I feel like, as a soldier, he might be more willing to take the rap after making a hard choice. Batman's reaction is also perfect and it's always fun to see Pennyworth. This is going to be one hell of a showdown-- for that matter, I'm not sure if the Guardian has been infected with some sort of nanite, or if he's trying to draw out the Batman by appearing on camera.
While it's not ideal that the video has been released-- someone is trying to mess with the Justice League-- I think that most people would give the Guardian a medal for killing the Joker. I don't approve per se, Batman's speech was powerful, but good riddance to bad rubbish. Now someone needs to incinerate the body... Just to be safe.

I started #81 as soon as I finished #80. This feels like a transitional issue (but not in a bad way). As much as this is a direct continuation of the previous arc-- an epilogue of sorts-- it’s also clearing the decks and reducing the team down to a manageable size before the hiatus begins. We’re going away for a year, but there’s going to be some special one-shots out in the interim, featuring characters who will play a large role in the future of the title. I’ll post the cover reveals before we go on hiatus, but I’m excited for what’s coming. Guardian's conversation with the Joker was fascinating. I really like his motivation and his decision to pull the triger, but I'm worried that he was so ready to turn on his peers. I feel like, as a soldier, he might be more willing to take the rap after making a hard choice. I wrote that scene before I wrote anything else in this arc, because it was originally intended to be in Justice League #80. We were running long, so I decided to cut it, and have the reveal be part of the “public” reveal of the event, and it ended up being a lot more interesting for it. It also informed the flow of this arc as well, as we’re going to be flashing back to the Hall of Justice’s holding cells in #82 too, where we get to see what happened before the Guardian came downstairs to execute the Joker. There’s more to what the Guardian’s doing than him turning heel for the sake of turning heel. He’s made the hardest choice of his career, and it’s informed by everything that’s happened to him since he joined the team years ago. Just because he might be willing to shoulder the blame for the execution, doesn’t mean the team won’t get dragged down with him though. That’s where Checkmate comes into it, and you’ll see their response-- along with another group’s-- in Checkmate #7, out this Wednesday. Batman's reaction is also perfect and it's always fun to see Pennyworth. This is going to be one hell of a showdown-- I really wanted to get into the nitty-gritty of why Batman doesn’t kill, so I’ve been reading up on all sorts of stories that addressed that point, as well as some really interesting articles online. Alfred is really important to the Bat-family unit, so having him as the sounding board for Bruce-- his son-- made perfect sense, in-story. I think the only reason he didn’t do the deed himself is because Bruce would never forgive him, but I don’t think it’s never occurred to Alfred to do what Bruce couldn’t. Maybe that’s something to be addressed further on down the line. And that showdown? Round one arrives in #82. for that matter, I'm not sure if the Guardian has been infected with some sort of nanite, or if he's trying to draw out the Batman by appearing on camera. Whatever the Guardian is doing, it’s not a real spoiler to say he’s doing it of his own free will. But we may not find out the reasons why until #83... I think that the public will have a very interesting reaction to the video release. When it comes to how that plays out in-story, we’ll see the world’s response to what’s going on in Checkmate more than Justice League, as I’m trying something different with how this story plays out. Justice League is dealing with the immediate issues the team faces, from the point of view of the team, while Checkmate is peeking behind the curtain of the team, and we don’t really get that internal voice that we’d get in the former book for those characters. We’re going to see Steve Trevor and Etta Candy’s thoughts about what they’re dealing with in their own book, and that may mean that the impression we have of the characters in Justice League is a lot more opaque, and a lot more questionable. Anyway, I just sent Justice League #82 to Mark for editing, so hopefully he can get it done before he heads off for his Christmas holiday! That’s my writing duties for 2018 wrapped, and I think I might take January off, because I’m in Japan for the end of December and the start of the year, and I won’t be able to take a laptop with me because I’m terrified I’m going to get robbed over there. Uh-oh.

Well, if the Guardian wanted to protect the team he would turn himself in and announce he's resigned fromt he League, and he acted on his own volition... Hmm. I'm sure Checkmate will try and leverage this to bash the League a little. I'm along for the ride, that's for sure. I'll have to catch up on Checkmate to add more thoughts on the Joker's death, then!
Have fun in Japan! A few friends of mine have visited Japan and it's one of the safest countries in the world for tourists, I wouldn't worry about getting robbed. That said you should take some R&R and get some time away from the keyboard!

Well, if the Guardian wanted to protect the team he would turn himself in and announce he's resigned fromt he League, and he acted on his own volition... As you'll see in parts three and four, the Guardian has unfinished business. I'm hoping we'll be able to spend some time in his head, as I've kept the POV away from his thoughts in the first two issues of the Justice League part of the story so far, but maybe the third will be a good place to delve deeper into what motivates him during this understandably intense moment in time. I'm sure Checkmate will try and leverage this to bash the League a little. I'm along for the ride, that's for sure. I'll have to catch up on Checkmate to add more thoughts on the Joker's death, then! Thing is, Checkmate are the heroes of their title, even though there are degrees of heroism of which each faction within that group are capable. But here, in Justice League? They're more antagonistic, for sure. They're actually arseholes. And we'll see why when their side of the story comes out in their half of the crossover! Have fun in Japan! A few friends of mine have visited Japan and it's one of the safest countries in the world for tourists, I wouldn't worry about getting robbed. That said you should take some R&R and get some time away from the keyboard! Doesn't stop me from being terrified, mate...
