Part four of our Checkmate / Justice League crossover has arrived, and we're nearing the conclusion of one of the most off-kilter mini-events I've written for the site. And at the same time... the next issue of Checkmate looks like it'll be the season finale, as everything that's been set up these previous issues come to a head. I'll talk about that more as and when we get closer. Until then, please let me know what you thought of this issue! Tsbranch's art is once again gracing the cover, and I'm pleased to have found three rollicking pieces of art that fit the tone and tempo of the story on the Checkmate side. Here it is again because I think it's worth sharing as much as possible:

Charlie has so many things in motion, it's crazy. We've got conspiracies, political intrigue, the Ultramarine Corps, and all levels of other craziness. In fact Charlie's run did inspire to pick up the first hardcover of Greg Rucka's run on Checkmate when I saw it at my local library. Haven't started reading it yet but I think it would be cool to see how it does or does not parallel the DC2 version.

DC2’s latest version of Checkmate owes a massive debt to Rucka's, and it’s one of those runs I have in multiple formats, because it’s so damn good. I can always go back to it and re-engage on so many levels with each re-read, and I hope that the same kind of effect is present in what I’m doing here. I’ve mentioned it elsewhere (there I go again) but one of the things UDC and I have discussed before is the idea of “seasons” instead of ongoing runs of stories, and while I had plans to run this first spate of stories for longer, the next issue of Checkmate will be the season finale. There’s loads more story to tell… the mystery of the Red Court, the blue demons in the basement, the tensions in Kahndaq and, of course, the ever-present threat of Kobra, but with “ The Widening Gyre” going the way it is for both Checkmate and Justice League, I realised it’s a great opportunity to wrap a load of threads up ready for the next phase of my work on the site, so I hope you keep reading until the finale, which will be out at some point next month! I hope you enjoy, and I hope you get the same kick out of Rucka’s run that I did! It led to one of my favourite mini-series of all time JSA vs Kobra, which informed my relaunch of Justice League in such a massive way back in 2013. …Bloody hell, I’ve been planning events of this run for over six years. That’s a horrid thought.
