October 27th, 1945, Austria
The bunker, turned museum of mystical artifacts collected by a homicidal madman, was an ambush. The smell of ozone filled the air, as Dr. Fate tasted copper beneath their golden helmet. The army of undead Nazi soldiers lay decimated, but not before taking the rest of the team down first. Fate was all that stood between the world’s salvation and madness…

Snow blanketed the ground outside the bunker. Cold, unrelenting wind bit through the heroes’ uniforms. Liberty Belle and Black Canary were the only ones that thought to bring winter coats. The Flash stayed in a constant state of vibration, letting the wind & snow pass through him. It was a strain, but the best he could do given their situation.
"Shoulda’ brought a freakin’ parka." Wildcat said shivering.
"Now you know why we wear capes, Ted." Hourman said with a smirk.
"Speak for yerself there, Rex… I’m wearing shorts." The Atom grumbled.
"Are you sure this is the place Doc?" Johnny Thunder asked.
"The Mystical Convergence I detected… Magic has gathered… it’s merging here, within these walls." Dr. Fate said solemnly as he placed a hand on the bunker door.
"In other words… yes" Mr. Terrific chimed in.
"Well… then what are we waitin’ for… let bust some heads!" Wildcat said enthusiastically.
"Wait… Nabu sends a warning." Dr. Fate spoke suddenly. "A dark power lies within these walls. A great evil unlike anything we’ve ever faced. Though it is our destiny to enter, not all may return."
"We’re the Justice Society" Liberty Belle stated, "we always win!"
"Let’s get this done, boss." Hourman said, popping a Miraclo pill.
"Form up team!" The Flash ordered with a confident smile, "Diamond formation."

The team had entered the bunker, not sure what to expect. They stalked forward cautiously, lead by Mr. Terrific and Black Canary. The Flash & Wildcat took the left flank, the right flank covered by Atom and Johnny Thunder. Hourman & Liberty Bell took the rear position. Dr. Fate covered the center, prepared to conjure a protective barrier at a moment’s notice.
They had used the Diamond Formation before in raids, with great result.
This was not one of those times.
When the last team member entered the bunker, the trap was sprung. The speed, in which the attack came, not even the Flash could have stopped. Liberty Belle was the first to fall, hit from above by an energy blast. The beam burned the flesh from her bones… her death was instantaneous, she felt no pain. She was the lucky one.
Immediately, Dr. Fate was hit by a similar energy beam, but was able to deflect it. The distraction was enough to stop him from conjuring a protective barrier. "The mystical convergence in this room, it blinds Nabu. We are vulnerable" Came Fates warning.
A figure dressed in all black jumped from the ceiling into the center of the fray, standing before Dr. Fate. He carried the Spear of Destiny & an ancient broadsword. He thrust the sword at Dr. Fates neck, but the blow was parried by an energy ankh. The battle had begun.
With Dr. Fate distracted, an army of undead Nazi’s pounced on the survivors. Hourman, stunned by Liberty Bell’s sudden death, was smothered by undead soldiers. Machine gun fire erupted into the crowd of bodies, striking the undead & JSA members indiscriminately. Hourman’s fists flew at his attackers.
"Scatter!!!" Came the order from The Flash, but too late. There was a mystical trap set for the more powerful members of the team. The moment the Flash began his lightning fast, sprint he hit an invisible barrier flattening him like an amateur. In a split second one of the most powerful men on Earth was taken out of the battle.
"Say you!" Came the cry from Johnny Thunder, and with a burst of pink light, his magical thunderbolt appeared. "Stop the gunfire!" Johnny Ordered
"I’m on it, Johnny!" the thunderbolt shouted. Before he could take action, an invisible bubble of energy enveloped him, and dropped to the ground. No matter how hard the thunderbolt struggled to break free of the mystical bonds, it would not give. Johnny rushed to the Thunderbolts aide, pounding on the translucent mystical sphere, but it was as solid as concrete. The Thunderbolt attempted to shout a warning, but no sound could break the barrier. He watched in horror, as the butt of a rifle knocked his master unconscious.
"Johnny!" Black Canary shouted as she fought with furious abandon.
"There’s nothing you can do for him Dinah! Keep fighting!" Mr. Terrific shouted.
But Black Canary was overwhelmed, tackled from behind by their advancing enemies. Mr. Terrific pounced on the undead soldiers trying to pry them off of Canary when more gunshots rang out. Struck several times, he collapsed gasping for breath, his body adding to the masses that smothered Dinah. Blood filled his collapsed lungs as he slowly drowned.

Wildcat & Atom hit the ground as the first shots rang out, neither was bullet proof. The Nazi soldiers pounced on them. The seasoned warriors fought back pounding the creatures. Heads became ash. Limbs were wrenched free and used as weapons. But no matter how many they destroyed, more came forward from the shadows.
It was like a portal to Hell had been opened, spilling its guts free of the most wretched & vile creatures to ever walk the Earth.
"Terry’s down! Terry’s down!" Hourman shouted, rushing to Mr. Terrific’s side.
Wildcat and Atom hesitated for the briefest of seconds in reaction, and were swarmed. Both swung their mighty fists furiously, but had lost their advantage and were overpowered.
No matter how hard the remaining members of the Society hit the Nazi monsters, no matter how many pieces of the creatures were knocked off, they kept coming.

Dr. Fate & the hooded man in black circled each other like predators, waiting for a moment to strike.
The Nazi soldiers left Fate alone… clearly the attack was meant to distract the Justice Society. Dr. Fate was the intended prey.
"ENOUGH!!! Be gone creatures of Anubis!" shouted Fate, as an energy blast disintegrated the undead warriors. The hooded man in black before him used the mystical sword to protect himself from the blast. The Justice Society lie on the ground, some dead, some unconscious, Fate did not have time to check when the man in black struck.
The attacker swung the sword wide. The mystical blade broke through Fate’s sudden defensive barrier, striking him on the side of his helmet and knocking the hero to the ground. The man in black stood above Fate, Spear of Destiny poised to strike, in his right hand, the sword in his left.
<"You will give me the amulet willingly, or all your friends will die."> Came the demand in German.
Fate looked upward at his attacker, recognizing the voice. The voice every American tied to their radio at night for the past few years had known. The voice of hate and oppression. The voice of the man responsible for the deaths of millions in holocaust.
"You’re dead." Came Dr. Fate’s response.
<"The reports of my death were greatly, exaggerated"> Hitler responded as he pulled off the black mask concealing his face. His unmistakable countenance curled into a hideous smile. <"The amulet… NOW!">
"No, You are dead, you just haven’t realized it yet." Fate said calmly as he rose, staring into the eyes of evil.

Chapter 2: The Tomb of Nabu Egypt, The Valley of the Kings, 1985.
Hector and Lyta Hall stared in amazement at the Egyptian hieroglyphs on the wall before them. The word ‘Fate’ still burned yellow. It may have been the lost tomb of Khufu that they stood in, but this was something else altogether. It had to be… Hector was sure of it.
Lyta felt it too as the goose bumps traveled over her limbs. She had felt an inexplicable draw to Professor Hall… yet just attributed it to him being ‘hot’. This went far beyond that. She knew they were linked… yet did not know how.
Was it fate?
"Ms. Trevor… touch the hieroglyph with your other hand." Hector requested, "but don’t let go of mine."
Silently she reached forward and touched the hieroglyph with her right hand… her left still clutching onto Hector’s with all of her might. Hector reached out as well with his left hand to touch the word, etched in fire, on the wall of the lost tomb.
The Earth beneath them seemed to lurch with a deep rumble as the wall before them came to life. The hieroglyphs light intensified and the ancient stones the wall was composed of began to move as if they were alive. The archaeologist and the photojournalist backed quickly away from the wall. Lyta quickly let go of Hectors hand and practically leaped into his arms for safety.
The stones shifted and realigned themselves revealing a long corridor, darker than a starless, moonless night. Hector waited a long moment, for something to snap. He had seen the result of ancient booby-traps in the past and did not wish for he & Lyta to become victim to another. Still gripping Lyta tightly, he peered into the corridor, but saw nothing.
"Um, excuse me… Dr. Hall?" Lyta said rather embarrassed at her initial need to be held.
"What? Oh, yes, of course!" Hector released her sensing her newfound discomfort.
"What is it? I mean, besides the obvious?" she asked quickly.
"I don’t know…" he said thoughtfully. He bent down, gathering a small stone fragment in his hand and tossed it through the doorway. It landed with a dull thud. It wasn’t a pit at least. It dawned on him suddenly that he had a small flashlight in his shirt pocket. He grabbed it, turned it on and shone it through the doorway. The light peered 5 feet forward before the darkness overcame the beam. It was far enough to verify that there was at least a full floor.
He walked forward, cautiously stepping through the doorway.
"Oh, I don’t think so Dr. Hall…" Lyta urged as she lunged for his arm. "You’re not going anywhere without me."
"Carefully then…" Hector cautioned with a smile, moving her hand from his arm to a belt-loop on the seat of his jeans, "step only where I step."
Lyta nodded enthusiastically in reply.
"Ok then… here goes." He stepped forward with Lyta in tow.
Lyta clutched onto Hector’s belt-loop for dear life and held tighter with each step.
"Careful now Ms. Trevor, you’re going to pull me backward."
"…sorry…" she whispered relaxing a bit.
The moment they had both cleared the doorway, an ancient torch jammed into a wall sconce burned to life. Both paused and stared at it, unsure of what to think. Hector reached up and pulled at the torch, but it wouldn’t budge.
"…that’s kinda weird…" Lyta whispered to him.
He turned and looked at her, "You think?"
They continued down the corridor each time they stepped beyond the reach of the torchlight another flared to life. With each torch, Lyta increased her grip again on Hector’s belt-loop. When they reached the end of the corridor they stepped into a cavernous, pitch-black room.
Hector reached into his shirt pocket and grabbed the small flashlight again. He clicked it on again and caught site of something in the center of the room before the flashlight burned out.
"Dammit! I just put batteries in this blasted thing!" he said as he smacked the flashlight in the palm of his hand.
"There are steps in the center of the room." Lyta exclaimed.
"I saw them too. I’m going towards it. Hold onto me…" He began as he moved cautiously forward. "Slowly now."
After what seemed an eternity they reached stone steps. Slowly they proceeded up the steps. As they reached the top of a stone platform, the room erupted with light. Torches burned in wall sconces and a trough that ran along the wall of the entire chamber sparked to life with fire.
They stopped to look at the chamber… it was unlike anything they’d ever seen. And it was unlike anything Hector had even seen in Egypt. In fact the only semblance of Egyptian architecture were 3 statues standing on the stone platform with them. One in the center was a bearded man, wearing gauntlets, an amulet and holding a helm of gold. Behind it and to the right was a statue of what looked like Horus, the Hawk-God. To the left of the statue was what looked like a female counterpart to Horus. Before the three statues stood a small alter of stone that held two halves of a broken gold amulet. The amulet looked exactly like the one on the statue.
Hector walked forward toward the altar.
Lyta stayed behind to survey the rest of the chamber. At least it seemed at first to be just a chamber. The ground surrounding the stone platform was Egyptian sand; the stone beneath their feet and the stone the walls were composed of were not Egyptian. The walls were a deep gray color and completely free of hieroglyphs. She looked up and realized they were not in a chamber at all.
"… Hector!" Lyta whispered excitedly.
Hector ignored her as he stared at the broken amulet. He searched all around it for signs of a trap, but found nothing. He reached into his back pocket and retrieved a small brush. He began dusting the amulet off and came across a hieroglyph. From top to bottom… water, a bent arm, a leg with a foot & a small bird.
"Nabu again…" Hector said to himself, looking back up at the statue of the bearded man.
"Hector!!" Lyta called again a little louder, which he either ignored or didn’t hear.
"Nabu…" he said to himself as he gently picked up half of the small, broken amulet with a handkerchief. He held it up to the torchlight. "Fate… I’ve heard this before." He said to himself. "Fate… it’s not a word… well, it is, just not to be taken in that context. Like Nabu… it’s a name."
"HECTOR!" Lyta shouted at him, causing him to jump and nearly drop the amulet half. She had stepped right up behind him.
"Jesus, Lyta! What?" he asked, his heart pounding in his chest.
Looking him in the eye, she simply pointed upward. He followed her finger up and was shocked by the sight. Instead of a stone ceiling, the chamber went up and up with gray stone staircases leading to other levels. The chamber seemed to stretch on and on. Level after level. At the pinnacle, where the ceiling should have been there were stars, planets… what looked like an entire galaxy. It was indescribable.
"My God… We’re in a tower. It’s daytime. We’re less than 150 feet underground… How is this possible?" He asked turning to Lyta.
"You’re the professor… I thought you might know."
"Nabu… Fate… names." He said staring back down at the amulet. "My mother & father. I know this somehow. It’s all tied together."
"You said that Nabu was Khufu’s most trusted advisor, right? Well… this place is attached to the tomb of Khufu. Your parents discovered it… didn’t they?" She said confidently, "There’s your link."
"No… well, yes. But it goes deeper than that." He answered, closing his eyes, "I don’t know how… when I was younger, my parents, before they died, had friends that would come by. They would meet together for hours talking. I was too young to understand what they were saying. In fact, I always thought this was my imagination and not memories… there were… two of these people… a married couple, I think. I remember seeing them more than the others. The man… he had an amulet he wore on a gold chain. I remember touching it when he held me. I remember him laughing; kindly… he and his wife were very kind. I know this name… Fate. These people spoke of him… Nelson. They were the Nelson’s."
"I assume, we’re not talking about Ozzie & Harriet. Alright… Nabu… Fate… is it possible Fate & Nabu were the same person?" Lyta asked.
"Impossible… Nabu was alive in the 3rd dynasty of Egypt. They spoke of Fate as though they knew him personally." Hector replied even more confused.
"So this has what to do with this place?" Lyta asked.
"This amulet… it’s identical to the one that Nelson wore. Ken… no… Kent. Kent Nelson." He said, opening his eyes & looking up again toward the ceiling. "And look… this statue." Hector rushed to the statue pointing at it excitedly, "This, I believe, is Nabu… he’s wearing the same amulet."
Hector looked at the altar and saw the other half of the amulet. He reached down and picked up the other half with the same handkerchief.
"What the Hell were my parents into?"

Later that evening, Hector & Lyta had retreated to their tents. Hector sat at a table set up in the center of the tent studying the broken amulet under intense light. The gold was untarnished… something almost unheard of for an artifact of it’s age.
He placed both halves beside each other, unsure of what to expect. He held his breath and joined the two halves.
Nothing.
"Whew… magical mumbo-jumbo." He breathed an uneasy sigh of relief. "Don’t know what I expected. But, my friend, you are a mystery. That temple… the torches… otherworldly… and you’re making me talk to myself. That’s never a good sign. Damn heat must be getting to me."
He wiped his brow with a handkerchief and leaned back in his chair thinking of all that had happened that afternoon.
"Dr. Hall! Dr. Hall!!! Come quickly!" the voice of his assistant, Khepri called out to him from just outside his tent.
Hector jumped up, grabbed the amulet, shoving it into his pocket and ran to the tent entrance, the urgency in Khepri’s voice was unmistakable. Hector threw open the tent to the sight of hundreds of well armed men garbed in black. Some were on horseback, others on foot. They had moved silently into the camp, their faces covered to protect their identities.
"Raiders, Dr. Hall!" Khepri was panicking.
"Calm yourself, Khepri." Hector soothed as the raiders went from tent to tent, gathering Hector’s crew.
The raiders worked silently, shoving the workers into a circle, surrounded by other armed assailants. Demands for the black clad strangers’ identities were ignored outright. Some that resisted were pistol whipped and thrown forcibly into the circle.
"Hey! Leggo creep!" Lyta shouted, as she was drug from her tent. She attempted to claw herself free, but to no avail. She was shoved into Hectors arms.
"What the Hell is going on Hall?" She demanded.
"I have no idea, but keeping quiet may keep us all alive." Hector replied.
"Words of wisdom, Dr. Hall!" A man garbed in white stepped forward through the circle of raiders. Aside from the color, his outfit matched the men in black exactly. "Now… take me to the Nabu’s tower."
"I have no idea what you’re talking about." Hector replied.
"Indeed?" The man in white pulled a small revolver from his belt and fired a single shot into the crowd.
Hector jumped back when the shot was fired. Everyone looked to see who was hit; yet no one fell.
"Hector…?" Lyta looked up into Hector’s eyes. She placed a bloodied hand on his shoulder and fell limp into his arms.
"Lyta!!!" Hector yelled as he set her gently down on the ground. The gunshot was to her abdomen.
"Damn you!" Hector yelled at the man in white. The guards in black took aim at him in response.
"Hold your fire!" The man in white said as he began to remove the wrappings from his face, revealing the familiar face of Anthony Haston. Curator of the Great Museum in Cairo, and the man that had single-handedly funded the expedition.
"You!" Hector exclaimed. "But, why? Everything we find is yours…"
"No Dr. Hall… you posses something more dear to me than anything you may find in that temple." Haston smiled to himself. "Your son."
