Yes! This is the way to finish a story arc!
Thrills! Spills! Automobiles!
I'm so glad Katar has joined the League, and at last, we have the Hawkman/Atom teaming we've (I say we, I mean 'not Dave') been waiting for! Superman and Green Lantern taking a major one for the team and Batman-- Dying?! For a minute there I was worried! How is he--?! Who is--?! And what--?! AH! ILLUSION! Awesome. Loved it.
Thanks Brian, and that final scene... Oo er!
NICE!

Trippy stuff. The way Despero was defeated was gross, suspenseful and simple genius. A that ending was excellent ("Dude, the red phone is flashing!") and sets up excellently for the next story arc (Can you say WWIII?) All in all, great stuff. You guys never cease to amaze me.

As for that final scene. Hmmm...

The next arc that you mention is the prologue to our 2 year Celebration, called Justice League Vs. America! A Crisis on an epic scale! Because of this, the next Justice League issue will fall on the last week of June, instead of the first. Hope you enjoy what's coming up! A lot of our writers and artists are working over time to make this a real grand story!

Wow. I was thinking illusion, but then no, but then.....kept me guessing! Most frightening moment. Batman: "I don't have one". I like that Atom seems to be the lighter side of the team. Do I smell a Hawkman/Atom mini, or is that just me? Hawkman was banished for closing a mine in the attempt to save the planet? Dude, those thanagarians are harsh.

Good issue, Despero is an awesome villain. I liked the previous fight between J'onn and him. Although I kind of saw J'onn phazing into the ground to avoid the blast though. For a second I did think The Atom had killed Despero, then you threw out the twist. Great job with that.

And you don't know the half of it with those Thanagarians. You should see what happens when one of them jaywalks. *shudder*

Yes, that was a clever way to beat Despero.
The Thanagarians are ******** though.
As for Aquaman; oh ****!

It was not an easy arc to write, but I'm glad it had a few surprises for people.

Awesome and what you made Atom do I was kinda thinking....why doesn't he always do that and then when they were all in a circle and Ray threw up I felt horrible that the League had sunk to blowing up an alien's head....thank goodness for you and your illusions. Nicely done...but seriously which genius on the team thought Despero would be stuck in that mineshaft forever. Do none of them read comics!
The ending though: WOW! Cant wait for the Crisis. How the hell will the army fight the sea itself?!

I really liked the first two issues of the arc, but the final issue didn't really work for me. I'll give you 3 stars. These illusions are taking away too much of the story... I don't really like that. I want to have the real actions. If they had really killed Despero, that would've been a shock and an impact for the whole series. another question: what happened to Adam Strange's wife during the battle? GL brought her away from the battleground, and then? Where did he bring her to? Why wasn't she mentioned again after being introduced so long in the last issue?... all in all it was okay, but that issue was not as good as the others imo... the cover was great, Adam Let's see what the next issue brings us

Honestly, Riz, I didn't like it either. but then I wasn't happy with this arc at all. All I can say is that most of it was written in a haze of pain medication.
hope the next story is more to your liking. And as always, thanks for reading and responding.

"A haze of pain medication." That explains all the illusions. ;D Godd stuff. Not great, but good. Best part was making me think Atom blew off Despero's head -- silly me, I figured he was merely going to stomp on a few neurons like his wife did in that other universe. So now the League's up to 9 superfolks, if I'm keeping score correctly. Are we gonna get a new teammate with every arc or what?

I haven't gotten to reading this issue yet (I am very much looking forward to treating myself to it very soon!), but I want to interject with a quick comment first.
Whatever is wrong with this issue is my fault.
This story-arc was never Brian's idea; it simply wasn't the Justice League tale he'd wanted to tell. He very graciously picked up the slack when I abruptly dropped the title, back in December--- and for my money, did a damn fine job with the very little I gave him to go on! Rather than let the DC2 down, Brian took on a thankless task, and I believe no one could have done it better.
I realize that no one was slamming this issue, I just wanted it known that if Brian had had free rein to do his own thing--- instead of carrying the weight of someone else's vagrancy--- his JL arc would have stood as some of the finest issues on the site (next to his outstanding New Outsiders run).
All I can say is: Watch out for the new Crisis coming this Summer! What Brian (and the rest of the staff) have planned will blow your minds!

very kind of you, David. Very kind. I do feel that I dropped the ball, though. But your words and beliefs are much appreciated.

I finally got a chance to read this issue, and I have to say it was filled with some good stuff! From the majestic Tupper cover, to Batman's chilling admission ("I don't have one.") and the clever way the League defeated Despero...!
I really enjoyed reading Brian's portrayal of Katar Hol (who, BTW, get's his own All-Star Comics arc, written by Yours Truly and starting this month!), and am intrigued by the machinations of Shayera Hol and Kanjar Ro! Something is rotten on Planet Thanagar!
As for the end--- I just wanted to yell: "Don't pick up the phone!"
The League really is filling out now, what with the addition of the Atom and Hawkman... Hmmm... The almost have enough members now for two books... Hmmm...

First I have to say that Adam's covers on this title have been simply amazing and the coloring just makes the image pop right off of the screen! Great stuff!
After all of the build up this issue delivers! The non stop battle was intense and was played out perfectly. And I don't care what anyone else says, the way Despero was taken down was freaking brilliant! My jaw dropped to the floor. "They did not just do what I think they did...did they?" Of course after it was explained it was even cooler using Desperpos mind against himself!
I also enjoyed the small but important scene at the end that touched on the beginnings of some classic character relationships with Hawkman and GL. Plus the Batman and Superman scene that touched on the Leagues 'destiny' was a very cool perspective.
This issue led perfectly into the following issues Crisis opening act. Just like in New Outsiders, Brian knows how to build a story up before delivering the knockout blow in the main act!
A great second arc on this title that delivered on a scale that is to be expected with the Justice League. Nice Finish Brian.

A solid follow-up to "A League of His Own," "A Mystery in Space" takes the Justice League right to the edge--and into the abyss! Despero allowed the author to deliver some sinister and even frightening moments in these issues; I had forgotten that the villainous alien was such a skilled telepath! This was, in my opinion, an excellent use of action and vivid description without toeing too far over the line. The League's clever defeat of their foe was inspired. If I understand some of the previous letters to the writer correctly, this story combined ideas for "Hawkman" with the "Justice League." While I can't say those elements worked as well for me as they might for other readers (I would have prefered a more direct confrontation with Despero, perhaps showcasing Martian Manhunter rather than Katar Hol) the writing and plotting were solid and entertaining. Nonetheless, the new backstory for the Thanagarians (or, at least, new to me) was interesting and left several tantalizing hints for future stories. I look forward to seeing Hawkman's adventures on Earth.
