I got such a kick out of this line: "...But of true Science! that forever presses past the comfortable bounds of the normal, rational mind.” The punctuation made it, and reminds me of the best kind of mad science in comic books. A little touch, but a brilliant one none the less!
I have to admit, even though they had a minor appearance, I still I can't wait to see where The Dummy (still a terrifyingly creepy villain) Needle and Doc Merlin turn next in their quest against the Soldiers! Little needs to be said right now in the beginning of their plot, but we all know it's going to be a horrror show.
This was a great read, lots of amazing moments bundled together into a smart little package-- enjoyed seeing everyone shine, and liked seeing Black Star not as a horrific monster, but as a tragic one, unable to help himself, or control the meltdown he's undergoing. And Number One was a brilliantly devious little bugger, and I enjoyed PLastique's acknowledgement of how convoluted a plan it was.
My one problem with this issue, and it's due to my own lack of paying attention (and the sheer amount of characters that are running around now) was the Crimson Avenger stuff. I gleaned a lot of information from the appearances here, but maybe you should incorporate either a catch-up or roll call to the start of the issue? Things are getting dense and I wouldn't want to be lost to some of the more enticing details you've got running around here.
Great issue, Don, and thanks for the plug at the end-- we've got something brilliant planned, I can promise the DC2 that!

Thanks a lot for checking us out, Charlie. Glad you enjoyed the Doc Merlin line, that was one of my favorites, and inspired by something I read in one of my RPG rulebooks. LOL It fits him so well, and I can't wait to show him off in action. The story of the Five Fingers, and the Dummy, are parallel for now, but be prepared for it to fork in one hopes a surprising way.
And I'm glad everyone got their moment to shine. It was hard in this one, because of the nature of the villain and the rather low-level, or non-powered, nature of the members. But it's also the fun part of writing the Law's Legionnaires. Poor Pat didn't get to do much more than chauffeur, but then, that was his profession when he was hired to help the Kid way back in the day. LOL There will be some more Plastique (Firebrand has a score to settle for that gray hair crack) and much more of local villain, Doctor Whack-a-doodle...er, Number One Arthur Pemberton.
I'm glad you could get enough of the Avenger stuff explained to help you along, but you're right, I think I'm going to have to add a "Previously on..." section to Seven Soldiers as well. As I'm reworking some of my story map for the series, there are 13 members of the extended Soldiers family (not counting Lee...see, no one can count properly in this group, not even the writer LOL), so yeah, I've got to do something about that.
And you're welcome for the blurb...me, I'm psyched for this one. Believe me, fellow readers, we have a villain coming up in SSV/SSSV (I love typing out that ;D) that's going to be a major player, so hang on tight, and see you all next month.
Take care Don

I think I agree that a "previously" blurb would be a good idea. I definitely liked this issue, but it took me a good while into it to figure out what was going on in that first scene. Granted, I'm a little tired and it could well have been my lack of attention XD I like how you keep setting things up every issue, letting different plots lie fallow and slowly come into the foreground. I'm absolutely interested in seeing what happens with this new Avenger, doesn't look like it can all go right and I'm curious what'll happen. I loved Justin and Ollie getting to interact, that was very funny. And I'm hoping to see more Bradamante in action soon wonder what happens when she and Justin have a chance to talk...

Brenda and Justin meet next issue, and you'll see what comes of that, as Justin gets back on his two feet. And Ollie and Yolanda will get to meet back up, but will that go as expected? I've a large cast, so one thing I'm going to look at doing is some alliances and team ups that will be different, get some different personalities a chance to connect, maybe clash. As for Crimson Avenger Lynn Tranh, her story will be far from over, even after she gets her revenge on Kosloff. There's just something about these Avenger hosts that keep them coming back, I guess. LOL
As for the recap blurb, I'm working on that, and collaborating with a beloved member of the site for that, so hopefully we'll see the fruits of that request next issue.
Thanks for commenting, Sam!
Take care Don

Make that a third request for a "Previously in..." recap. There was so many plot threads in this issue, my eyes were beginning to glaze over. However, I did enjoy the Crimson Avenger scenes (Lee doesn't recognize Sally now? Hmm... ), and all the little moments we had in Dos Rios (if he hadn't been on crutches, I'm sure Justin would've decked Ollie!). Plus the Dummy creeps me out, especially since we're going with the "animated doll" version instead of just an ugly dwarf. And thank you for the "Roll Call" in the Secret Files section! Great to see some nice clear represenations of the new members! BTW who did the art honors?

The roll call portraits were done by Boris, who was kind enough to oblige me with them, and not only did he get such great art in, it was only about a day. He's a machine, a truly talented, good-hearted machine. I asked him for the thumbnails to set up for the recap blurb (I've heard you all and yes, I do need to do one). I'd hoped to do it in a different fashion from the ones in Danger Trail and my League run, and use some art, and Boris went beyond the call, with such awesome pictures I couldn't let them sit in my files waiting to be viewed by everyone for a month. As for what's up with Lee's more subdued presence in Lynn, that will be getting more explanation in the next issue, as Sally (a former host) sees how things can go wrong with the Crimson Avenger. Take care Don

Yes, indeed, Boris' roll-call images are fantastic! I saw them as they went up, and I was just... "Wow". More characters than you can shake a stick at, and they're all so brilliant!

I thought they might be Boris, but it was hard for me to judge with such small samples.

As you know I am a bit of a continuity purist as long as it is DC continuity and not a lot of the cross-universe characters you seem to be so fond of using. In any case your use of Mapleville brought to mind a Quality character called the Barker. I did some quick research on him to see if he might fit in and here is what I discovered.
The original Barker was a mostly humorous strip similiar to Scribbly/Red Tornado or Plasticman. However, DC revived him as a more serious character in the back-up series in Detective Comics when they were experimenting with doing backups that were originally not Bat related in the Nineties? early 2000s. He might be a logical character to use in Mapleville.

Gee, thank you for your useful insight into the issue as presented. Your discussion of the story elements, characterization, art on the cover, and more, really added to the discussion of this issue. I'll take your comments on the issue to heart.
As for Mapleville, I took the location from an old Action Comics issue.
Take care Don

Okay, having read most of the issues in row I had no problem with understanding the Crimson Avenger scene at the beginning, and I have to say I'm a little afraid. So far Lee was my favorite character and seeing him in this new host being so coldblooded and full of hate scares me. Nontheless, this issue was amazing. AGAIN. The Dummy finally had an appearance again. And he's building an anti-SSoV group. Yay. Looking forward to see that. The plan of Arthur Pemberton was soooooooooooooooooooo unnecessary and over the top, this could have really happened LOL. Loved how you showed Plastique's thoughts about him and cosidering to overthink their contract. Now, when will Mikey get his uniform? A real Soldier needs a uniform. Him and Hayley, I knew this was coming. Good decision. Black Star was a great tragic character (I wouldn't even call him a villain here). Do they put him back into the box or will they try to rehabilitate him? I look forward to the next issue. 5 stars.
