As good as the big stories are, sometimes the little issues between arcs can be even better. This is one of those times--- this issue is deceptively good. No one gets punched or blasted, there are no moustache-twirling villains waiting to spring (unless you count the thing in the basement), but there are some startling developments, some great character moments, a scary, underlying sense of menace, and a surprising twist or two! We at last learn what the New Gods have been up to all this time since the Apokolips invasion (and the abortive DC2 series)--- and while I was under the impression this issue would be the start of the next Fourth (Fifth?) World epic, I am happy to settle for the pacing Charlie is laying down here (but really--- one paragraph? Argh!); Barda and Scott should make a nice addition to the constantly-shifting roster of this team. The scene with Blue Beetle and Dr. Light--- either it was chock-a-block with double entendre or was a pretty inane conversation (I rather think it was the former, given the Bwah-ha-ha potential building). Speaking of: Martian Manhunter, Dr. Light, Blue Beetle (he can protest he's not a member but how many issues has he been in now?), Guy Gardner, Mister Miracle, Big Barda and Batman... I know this team isn't going in the direction of Powers, Inc., but I wonder if this is a coincidence? The mystery of what's in the League's basement is pretty scary, if a bit generic at this point; looking forward to seeing that explored. J'onn's distress is ominous and Superman's election a no-brainer (though I'm not sure why Wonder Woman stepped down--- she kicked ass!). Is the League's HQ really a city? I mean, isn't it really more of a base, as opposed to a city (which should have people, businesses, homes, etc); what makes it a city? Anyway, aside from a few piddly nitpicks (like, no cover ), I really enjoyed reading this issue, and can't wait to see how the new status quo plays out! Five stars!

Yes, this was in the pipeline from the beginning, back when Kevin and I started talking about what we could do to make this a more "season" based format of writing, Big Bads and all that, and I'm glad it came together. I've changed the identity of "Prisoner X", and we'll find out who he/she is before th end of the year. I had the first issue of a continuation of the New Gods written, but I thought... Why? Why start something that has been dead in the water, and why not let the reader imagine the hell and torment the New Gods went through? Of course we'll see the details, of course we'll get to it, but right now... something awful happened light years away, and Barda and Scott are going to be carrying the baggage of that. The scene with Blue Beetle and Dr. Light--- either it was chock-a-block with double entendre or was a pretty inane conversation (I rather think it was the former, given the Bwah-ha-ha potential building). Come on... Chris and I have been talking, and it all means something! ...Probably something dirty, in this case. Blue Beetle is a reservist using the facilities in the base to further his research (a thread carrying over in to his own ongoing). He's been in two out of five issues, and he won't be in the next! Probably. I know what you mean about the team, it's become massive and I love it, but I'm hoping not to lose sight of the core team I introduced at the beginning. Animal Man, Doctor Light and Firestorm all have a story that will be told, and Buddy is integral to the end year story. I do like the parallels though to the Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire roster! Heh, I didn't even intend it! The mystery of what's in the League's basement is pretty scary, if a bit generic at this point; looking forward to seeing that explored. J'onn's distress is ominous and Superman's election a no-brainer (though I'm not sure why Wonder Woman stepped down--- she kicked ass!). It was covered in Don's final issue, and besides, I don't see the team really needing a Chairman, because they're all such finely tuned engines of Justice!! I see them as changing every year or so, pending the decision of the actual chairperson, and I think it's roughly been fourteen months since Don's run began, as suggested by Checkmate #1? Is the League's HQ really a city? I mean, isn't it really more of a base, as opposed to a city (which should have people, businesses, homes, etc); what makes it a city? Poor writing... Anyway, aside from a few piddly nitpicks (like, no cover ), I really enjoyed reading this issue, and can't wait to see how the new status quo plays out! Five stars! Glad you liked it, Dave. Next issue is in the bag, and I'm wanting to get the next arc, "Conqueror", finished before I get back to work! I HAVE THE WEEKEND!

After I paused this title for the Lord Havoc and the Extremists arc (I can't stand these characters, sorry) I really liked this issue. I was informed in one or two short sentences what happened and what will be important for the future. I like the "Prisoner X" plot a lot and I, again, have to say that the quiet issues, the ones between the big events are what really make me enjoy titles. Good work Charlie.
The cover was really sweet, too.
5 stars.

Good stuff Charlie. Sorry I haven't commented yet, but I have been keeping up with this title for the most part and I like what you have been doing with it. I like how you reestablished Bruce back to the team here in a quiet way between arcs making as he said himself in the issue seamless.

I haven't commented on the last few issues of this title, but rest assured I have caught up and read them. I'm also in Riz's camp when it comes to Lord Havok and the Extremists. Was never much of a fan and although the last few issues were some of the most solid Justice League I've read, the "villains" just don't grab me personally.
With that being said, I'd give every issue up to now that I haven't commented on four solid stars, and this one is a huge five star issue.
I'm a sucker for character stories, and this had it in spades. Loved the scene between Beetle and Dr. Light (a character I've never really been a huge fan of either, but done extremely well in the hands of Mr. Charlie).
What I love the most, though, is everything Martian Manhunter. My absolute favorite character of any JL incarnation, you are doing a superb job making him a complex and compelling character. Bravo for that!
If I had one thing that made me moan (please keep in mind it's a personal thing for me) is Supes as Chairman. I loves me some Superman, but it just felt like a really safe choice. I would have loved to have seen a chairperson who was a bit more "outside of the box".
And as for their newest member? Have to admit the closer I got to the reveal the more I was hoping it would be Guy. When the reveal happened I could have grabbed you by the face, Charlie, and planted one on those lips of yours! THANK YOU!!!! J'onn and Guy in the Justice League... this has become my first read of the week at this point.
Great job!

That's fine, I know I started a bit left field but things are going to move in a more Silver Age direction but still retain my manic edge during the next arc. I started all high concept and crap with my first issue, and then second issue I was really proud of (I'm gonna revisit it, yes I am)-- and now we've had the Extremists, who I think are scary brilliant, but I'm sad people don't dig them. With that being said, I'd give every issue up to now that I haven't commented on four solid stars, and this one is a huge five star issue. I appreciate that, thank you. I'm a sucker for character stories, and this had it in spades. Loved the scene between Beetle and Dr. Light (a character I've never really been a huge fan of either, but done extremely well in the hands of Mr. Charlie). Thanks a lot, it was something that came out of a discussion with Chris, and I hope we both continue to use them in such a way that builds their relationship. That being said, Ted isn't going to be in the title for the next six issues, but after that... oh, how he'll be back. Just don't tell Chris! What I love the most, though, is everything Martian Manhunter. My absolute favorite character of any JL incarnation, you are doing a superb job making him a complex and compelling character. Bravo for that! He's such a cypher! A switchboard! I freaking hated it in Final Crisis when the heroes were all "with J'onn gone we've lost our psychic link", because I think it should be all "with J'onn gone, what hope do we have?" He's the greatest superhero ever, one of the most powerful, and he's about to go through one hell of a trial. Literally. If I had one thing that made me moan (please keep in mind it's a personal thing for me) is Supes as Chairman. I loves me some Superman, but it just felt like a really safe choice. I would have loved to have seen a chairperson who was a bit more "outside of the box". But it makes sense for the Leaguers to make that choice, I think. He's Superman, there are a lot of new guys, and a lot of the others probably wouldn't want to even consider being Chairperson, and he's Superman!! Who else would you rather have at your back? That being said, in the next arc we delve into the mechanics of the team, and I don't truly believe they need a chairperson, or leader. They're the best of the best, and as such they act, and think, and defer, and we'll see that in #34 with a moment between Batman and Superman. /TEASED. See you in New York? Seriously though, I'm loving the make up of the team right now, and have, I think, one more member to introduce and one member to have leave. It's going to be brilliant. With Hal's situation over in GL, and the fact that we have three Earth GLs, Guy assuming a more active role in the DC2 landscape just makes sense! Thanks Brian, always means a lot to hear from you!

After I paused this title for the Lord Havoc and the Extremists arc (I can't stand these characters, sorry) I really liked this issue. I was informed in one or two short sentences what happened and what will be important for the future. I was taking a leaf out of Don's playbook there, and trying to make sure that at the start of every issue-- or every arc, at least-- that the reader knew where they stand in regards to the characters featured. Glad it worked for you, and I'm still sad you didn't like the twist on the Extremists. And I hope you don't mind that they'll be back! Ha! I like the "Prisoner X" plot a lot and I, again, have to say that the quiet issues, the ones between the big events are what really make me enjoy titles. Yeah, but I'm afraid this is the last "quiet" moment for the time being. I have the next nine issues plotted quite tightly, and only after my fourteenth issue is there a moment of reflection. Brilliant. Brilliant, brilliant plans! I'm so excited, ha. Thanks, Boris! Always cool to hear from you, too! The cover was really sweet, too. Jamie is a freaking machine recently, so glad to be working with him here! Again, thank you. See you next month!

Bruce is back and he should be brilliant and be Batman, so having fun with that here, and following on from what Don did in DC2 Comics Presents was a delight. This title is the one I'm having the most fun with, along with GL, and I hope that it shows!
