Here's the latest Planet DC2 column, plus details of this week's new releases. Details of previous and future releases can be found on the calendar.
And welcome to the Planet DC2
Yes, it's been a while since I made one of these. Like a fortnight. Anyway, pray for this becoming weekly again!
Today the last issue of the Legion of Superheroes series comes out. You know, if you haven't read it, then shame on you. This is one of the titles that I await anxiously, and it makes me happy everytime it comes out.
Now, I have an exclusive interview with its writer, Scott (Lantern Lad). Here it is:
1. Which were your favorite Legion members to write?
Wow... how can I narrow the list down? Honestly, I'd have to say I have three.
Phantom Girl is fun. She's so soft, and yet she'll be the first to rush into the line of fire. She's smart, she's beautiful, she's sweet and she takes no guff from Brainiac 5. Plus she's the key figure in the greatest comic book romance (IMO) ever written: Phantom Girl & Ultra Boy! But, since she's currently dating Cosmic Boy in this series, it looks like that romance won't be around for a while!
Another would be Polar Boy, simply because he's the prankster of the bunch. He sees the humor in every situation, and when facing down some of the enemies the Legion has faced, that humor is needed to keep the morale up. He is misunderstood by many, because of his humor, though. He would do anything for his fellow Legionnaires.
Finally there is Cosmic Boy. He has always been my favorite Legionnaire, not just because he was the first one I ever 'met' back when I started reading Legion back in the 80's, but also because he is the Legion's heart and soul. I try and put 'everything good', or rather everything I would aspire to be, into his characterization. In my eyes, he is the LSH version of Hal Jordan.
Though not part of the question I'll tell you that my least favorite to write is Brainy. Not because of his personality, that's the fun part. It's very tough to come up with scientific 12th level computer brain solutions to problems when I, in fact, do not have a 12th level computer brain. Mostly I just throw a bunch of sci-fi words together and call it a day. Luckily no one's called me on any of it yet...
2. What can you tell us about the timeline disruption in the Attention Legionnaires thread?
Ummm... If I say too much it would give stuff away. You will understand more by the time you finish reading the issue, but nowhere near enough to find out what the big picture is... yet. Let's just say that: "time is broken, there's a Legionnaire at the center of it", and leave it at that.
3. With number 6, comes the end of your Legion run. Since when did you started the planning of this, and how has it progressed?
Honestly, I originally planned my run to last 12 issues. The first six issues would be the Dark Circle arc, followed by a couple of stand alone issues, then the last four would shed some light, as well as fire and brimstone, on the Dominator... uh... dominance of the United Planets. Due to my hectic school schedule, not to mention work and family life, let's just say we've all noticed how sporadic the LSH has been. That's not fair to you guys at all.
When I wrote Tales of the Green Lantern Corps, the entire Legion Virus Saga was done about 8 months before posting. I wanted to make sure, with this hellish schedule of mine, that it was, without fail, monthly. So I decided to stop the Legion now, at the end of the Dark Circle saga, take some time to write the next arc, and unleash it on the masses on a monthly basis.
It will be back in the form of two one-shots featuring the origins of some of the new characters, followed by a 4 issue mini. If I can get far enough ahead, the stories will continue beyond that.
4. Is everything from the last 5 issues be concluded in the sixth issue, or will there be loose ends?
No, some things will definitely be wrapped up, but there will be some dangling plot threads that will be dealt with in the mini-series and one-shots. Read the issue and you'll all know!!!
5. At the ending of issue 5, there were some extra Legionnaires. Will every team member appear in the issue?
Every member will make an appearance or at least be mentioned in issue #6. And always keep your eyes on Nemesis Kid... not too sure he can be trusted...
6. Were there any Legionnaires that you wanted to use, but couldn't. If so, who were they?
Mon El. He's another of my favorite Legionnaires that I would love to use, but I was kind of waiting for someone to use him in the 21st Century before I shipped him off to the 31st. I don't see that happening, so I'll probably incorporate him in the upcoming mini without a 21st century adventure... he simply will have been rescued from the Phantom Zone.
Or maybe I'll write it. Who knows?
7. Any spoilers, final comments, thoughts?
No spoilers other than the 'time being broken' comment I gave you earlier.
Otherwise I just want to thank the folks that have read/followed/supported the series since day one (literally... it all started on opening day with Superboy and the LSH bonus issue). I'd like to thank David (Idlewilder) for 'encouraging' me to write it... If it wasn't for his 'encouragement' it wouldn't have happened. And stay tuned folks, there is definitely more to come from the Legion!
Now, go and read it! NOW!
