And we're back!
This year's event has already started. Justice League Vs. America #1 is already posted. The heroes of the DC2 are seen as public enemies now. How will this unfold? If you haven't read it, go and do it before reading this interview with the writer of the first installment, Charlie, the english boy!
1. How did you get to write the first issue? Did someone ask you, or what?
I was approached by Brian, relaying ‘orders’ from Mark (I say ‘orders’, but I mean ‘a polite request’. This is Brian we’re talking about). I was assigned #1, though I would have preferred to write one of the later issues, as down key, somber issues are not, in my opinion, my forte. But saying that, I wouldn’t have anyone but the writers who are writing #2, #3 and #4 on any other book. Ellen, John and Brian are bringing their A-game to these installments, and I’m quite sad that I’m going to miss the next three weeks of the series!
2. What were your feelings about starting this years grand event?
Like I said, I didn’t want to. I wanted to write a big fight scene, or something with all the cool characters we’ve got available. I don’t think my installment was my strongest work, but it’s been received pretty well so far. It was a good excuse to stretch myself, and try a different approach to writing.
3. What did you do and what did Brian do? How many of the things in there were yours, and what had already been said through the planning?
Brian took what I had done and enhanced and improved it. I wasn’t feeling especially confident in my work, and he came in and edited it to fit in with what we had discussed. I was really worried, because my writing normally entails me going off on a massive tangent and working away from what I should be working to. Not cool. But with Brian and Mark’s help (Mark is always the consummate editor. Always a pleasure to work with him) I think it improved greatly. We had spent half the year planning this, and gone through each story beat with different ‘head writers’, each with their own vision, but with the final plot, I think we’ve done pretty well.
4. So, the reveal at the end of issue 1... What can you tell us about that? Is he the evil villain behind it all?
Seb, do you really think I’m going to tell you? And besides, I think ‘he’ prefers the term ‘It’, ok? And ‘It’ is not evil, ‘It’ is a force of nature! Anyone who’s seen the cover to #4 will attest to that!
5. What is Lord doing?! And with whom? Any clues you can give us?
Why would I want to ruin this book for everyone? You’re just going to have to read it. Sorry! But I will say that in the finale, there is one fight I’ve been looking forward to since it was first brought up by Scott and Brian. I’ve been waiting for it for months.
6. Thoughts about the rest of the series, spoilers, something?
From what I’ve seen and heard, the finale of this crossover is going to be on-par with our very own Justice League #0. The villain in the endgame may not be Darkseid (or is it?) but it’ll be amazing in its own special way. Also, big shout out to the writers who aren’t writing the main miniseries, but are writing the tie-ins. Roy, Grant, Jay, John and everyone are doing some amazing work, and I cannot wait to get back from my America trip in August to finish reading everyone’s work!
Be back next week, with more about this year's event! A MUST read!
