Here it is, this week's Planet DC2:
As you've probably figured, this week we've got John Elbe, writer of Suicide Squad and JlvsA. Let's go:
1. How do you feel about being part of the writing roster for this event?
I was extremely nervous at first. I never saw myself writing a super hero ‘pop’ story. But when I was told that I could do my own thing I was able to relax and have fun with it. Of course being surrounded by such a wonderful group of talented people made what I did easier and it was an absolute privilege to be part of this.
2. Your installment incorporated an element that the others were lacking. Political intrigue, also there in another of your works, the Suicide Squad. How much did this and other previous work help you write this?
The ‘political intrigue’ label has been used before when describing this issue as well as my previous work in Suicide Squad and I would have to disagree somewhat. My goal is to always write what I would enjoy reading and that’s suspenseful character-driven stories involving characters that are broken or flawed. I love intrigue but politics is often used as a backdrop and rarely drives the story itself. When I was asked to write this issue I tried to use story elements that I felt the most comfortable with so it helped a lot. The Checkmate ongoing that premiers next month (insert shameless plug here) will include a lot of those same elements in a series that I hope will deliver an exciting and completely unexpected story. Of course this event is far from over so who knows what the state of Checkmate will be in once it’s over or who, if anyone is left standing in the end.
3. How much of the elements in here were your part, and how many where planned before?
Most of the main story elements were in place long before I began writing the issue. For the rest I spent a lot of time with Brian hammering out the details regarding what I could add to the story involving Checkmate and some of the ‘political intrigue’ LOL! Of course Jay (arcalian) had a big role in some of the Justice League scenes as well as Brian and of course Mark, who edited the whole thing and was able to make the issue flow better and tie into the big finale that follows. For anyone interested, there’s an‘extended cut’ version of this issue with a few deleted scenes left on the cutting room floor. Those missing or expanded scenes will show up elsewhere.
4. Can you tell us about the villains at the end? How were they chosen? Are they causing things in this event, or are they just going to use this for their advantage?
The villains at the end where mostly chosen by Brian using input from the DC2 staff that worked on this story behind the scenes. They were gathered together for a reason and individually they are all dangerous. Together they will be one group to keep a close eye on.
5. Any final thoughts, comments, or spoilers?
I want to personally acknowledge Brian for all his hard work and dedication to this project. He rose to the challenge and made this truly a remarkable event. I don’t want to give anything away so no spoilers here but I will toss this out there: Not all of the players in this saga have been revealed yet. Plus, with all of the characters seen thus far, there is certain to be some ‘interesting’ confrontations before this story ends.
Thanks for reading!
