Here's the latest Planet DC2 column, plus details of this week's new releases. Details of previous and future releases can be found on the calendar.
And I'm back!
Yes, it is that time of the week again! This time, I'm interviewing Charlie... again. Hear what he has to say about his run on the Flash, Green Lantern, Doctor Occult, and everything else. Here it is:
The Flash
Okay, after nine issues, you come back. Why do you return? Unfinished business, new ideas?
Charlie: Because I wanted to write him again. And we needed a new ongoing writer. Well, actually, swap those two around, because we needed a new regular writer, and I only had… two books I was writing post IXXE. So I thought, hey, I can do this. I was also going to be co-writing Action Comics with [name redacted], but he did that thing he normally does and dropped off the radar, so thankfully Roy Flinchum took the baton on that and ran, ran with it like a sprinter from Nigeria. He seriously showed he was up to snuff with #20 and #21. Amazing.
And yeah, I suppose my first arc was a let down for me (was it a let down for you?) because I went off it for three issues, allowing a fill-in arc from Brandon and another from… Sean. Then I came back in, kind of raring to go because Borize had turned in some amazing work, and I carried on like I never left. Literally. I assumed that the three issues I left for had actually been written, and I continued the story as if the story was there. Ha, I think John said “I made no apologies” for the way I wrote that arc, and I really didn’t. I enjoyed it, personally, because… You know, Zoom. Awesome character. I enjoyed all of that, because once I had that final little twist, with Jay Garrick, I knew I had to write it. It’s like Arcalian’s, Jay’s, his Corporate Rivalry mini series in Elseworlds, it’s like the reveal at that. God, I cannot rave enough about that book. It was amazing. Big fan now.
And new ideas? You could say that. What we’re doing, Mike and I, is we’re taking things that weren’t in the previous writer’s run, and we’re bringing them to the forefront. The last nine issues were very ROGUE centric, with the Top, Captain Cold and Weather Wizard all playing pivotal roles, and we wanted to change that up. So #21 is very different from what you’ve seen before, with Kid Flash and the two other Flashes facing a very different villain. And also, we introduce a new cast member, who plays a major role in the book. We thought that Wally wasn’t utilized well in the arc, so we want him to play a big role (and you’ll see what we mean early next year in a little event we’re working on ) and with Jay’s return in #20, he’s got to be around, he’s got to be held over until Dave arrives with Justice Society of America, which is coming in 2008, if you didn’t know
Oh, and also, Barry Allen gets a career change in #21.
"Time flies" was retconned at the end of it, and with the return of Jay, it's almost like half of your run doesn't even count (Still, it's awesome, in my opinion). Will you retake some of the things in there, or will it be entirely new stuff?
C: A villain will appear that appeared in that run, and will play a major role in the entire arc, and it’s going to rock. He is going to make you think ‘What the hell?’ because his motivation behind what he’s doing is unlike anything that’s come before.
And I loved the fact that my arc retconned itself out. It was so f’in ridiculous, that I’d written the book since #0, and I’d kind of messed up my own continuity with introducing a young Wally West and stuff, so I decided that the ending just worked like that. Ha, best moment of my Flash career.
You've said that you'll have a co-writer now. What made you decide that? What is your co-writer's opinion?
C: Life is hard. Honestly, too hard.
Mike: And of course, Charlie's sunny disposition is always welcome in our writing.
C: Mike Hewison everyone, known throughout the DC2 for his unhealthy love of Corinthian, and in fact turning Rogues Gallery into a book focused mostly on that guy!
M: And of course Charlie is best known for his bloody rampage across the DC2 and his man-crush on Dr Occult
C: Bastard!
M: Wanker, yeah I used British slang Charlie, eat it.
C: Mike, just answer the man's question.
M: Oh, isn't that one of your victims?
C: MIKE! Answer the question!
M: Fiiine… Well, Charlie asked me to help write The Flash, we had talked about working on a couple different projects together, but none of them really got green lighted. So, both of us being the speed freaks we are, The Flash was the perfect project to team up on.
C: It’s been really fun talking about where we’re going to go with the book, even though like twenty nine of our ideas have been shot down by editorial. But we’ve kind of got ourselves a clear direction we’re going to go in, and when I say clear, I mean clear with chances of MANY TWISTS AND TURNS TO MESS YOUR MIND UP!
How can you hope to reach the level that the last writer left? I mean, he was amazing.
C: Pretty easily, I think. We just won’t include the Top. Or will we?
M: Well, I do enjoy writing Rogues Gallery, but I think I'd prefer to write about the heroes this time around...
C: We jest of course! In all honesty, our runs will be different beasts. Where yours was Rogue centric, ours will focus on the Flash, and this is going to be a very personal story for all of the speedsters involved.
M: And I for one am personally going to settle the question, "Is The Flash truly the fastest man alive on all fronts?"
C: Ok, you’re finished here.
The Question
So, are you bringing him back, or what?
C: Yeah, I am.
Action Comics Annual
Issue Two: World War Three Part Three (of Three)
Written by House Of Mystery
Cover by Roy Flinchum
Interior Art by Mischief Dragon
Edited by [To Be Confirmed]
This is it, the wait is over! Superman is back after being missing for months, and he's just in time to face down his deformed brother, Kru-El, the villain known as Doomsday, in a knockdown, drag out slugfest for the fate of all humanity! Meanwhile, in Metropolis, the Guardian escapes the clutches of Cadmus, and you won't believe how! Caesar faces down the escaped inmates of Stryker's Island! Steel lies dying in his Steelworks, and Rip Hunter is trapped in the future... Listening to the final words of one of the world's last heroes! What is wrong with the timeline? And what does this have to do with what's going on in the present?
What makes this any different from the last fight he had with him last year?
C: Ha, oh, I love this cliché. Because this time, it’s personal. Because Doomsday is sentient this time round, and he’s got a grudge. Before, he was a mindless killing machine, only making noises and grunts, and Superman wasn’t even able to clearly defeat him then! I mean come on, Kru-El just broke out all the villains from Stryker’s Island, and destroyed the Justice League! If Superman doesn’t stop him, who will?
You spent your arc with the supporting cast in Action Comics. What will happen with Caesar, Steel and Rip Hunter?
C: Rip Hunter is… I don’t think I can talk about what’s going to happen with him yet. Chris, Pat, Mike and I are working on something that will blow your minds with that guy. We’ll get back to you in a few months with news on that…
Caesar will be appearing in a miniseries from under the “ACTION COMICS PRESENTS” banner, written by MischiefDragon, along with the re-release of Roy Flinchum’s Escape to Krypton! Miniseries, which was quite popular with anyone with common sense, and I’m sure John Henry Irons will be appearing somewhere in Action Comics, especially after the announcement at the end of the Annual.
Doctor Occult
Originally, this was supposed to be a limited series. What made you change your mind?
C: I listened to more metal, and I got more inspired. It wasn’t a pretty process, but it’s done wonders for my imagination. Like I’ve said before, I got him in a bad place when he appeared in The Flash, and this was my opportunity to “fix” him, and by the time I’m done with him, and he goes through what he’s gone through, he’ll be a different man once more. Will it be for the better? Stick around for the ride, it’s going to be awesome. As a story formed, I had to make more room for it, and Mark was kind enough to agree to it.
Why Dr. Occult? There are many mages and things like him in the DCU, so why him and not others?
C: I don’t know. I always thought he had this effortlessly cool vibe to him. Noirish like the Question, but with a specific twist to him that made him awesome. And I loved the Rose/Doc relationship, and I really wanted to play with that since… The site started. If you read around, you’ll see what I mean.
Green Lantern
Another question like the last one. What made you want to write Green Lantern? What makes this attractive to you (apart from your evil plan of writing every title in the site at least twice)?
C: Because Scott Kruger asked me to. ‘Nuff said.
Green Lantern came into my life with JLA under Morrison, and Green Lantern: Rebirth. I’m not an old-school fan, and by all rights I should be a Kyle Rayner fan, but no, Guy Gardner all the way. With Rebirth leading into Recharge, I fell in love with the guy, and he always will be close to my heart, as well as now Hal. Rebirth was so awesome. And with Scott giving me the opportunity, I couldn’t say no. Well, I could, but, really, I couldn’t. Really.
And I wrote a Green Lantern story ages ago, and it didn’t even contain Hal, which was a bummer, and it didn’t go down as well as I wanted it to, so I killed the character in Action Comics in a very memorable story arc that I’ve been told I can never mention again.
I think, when it comes to second runs on books, I’m trying to fix what I did before. To make restitution. When I started Action Comics initially, I did it poorly. I could have done it better, I admit that, and then when Doc and I took over this year, we tried to do something different, and when Doc left, I again tried to do something different. And it worked for some, and for others it didn’t. Story of my life.
What are your plans for your run here?
C: Three story arcs planned so far. #8-10 is going to be a wild ride. Then after that, we’re going to have some more fun. It’s going to be a dark place for Hal at the start, but by the end of the first arc, he’ll be out of it.
Someone close to his heart has been taken away from him, and that’s going to be niggling at him for the initial arc. Or is it?
Read it, it’s going to rock. And DrDread has signed on for covers on the first two issues!!
Other Stuff and Future Projects
Any future projects, last thoughts, or something?
C: Somethings. I have an Elseworlds proposal I want to write. I also have a project with Crow that we’re both excited about, and you’ll be hearing about that soon. Doctor Occult will be undergoing some changes as of #3, and then you’ll be hearing about our project soon after that. Pat, Chris, Mike and I are really excited about our Rip Hunter event. Yes, it’s an event, and it will blow your mind. And when it’s all said and done, I’m out of here!
S: How do you manage to write so much titles?
C: Well in advance.
Also, join the "Who will be the New Outsiders members?" contest in the title's letter page. Simply, write who do you think will be in the new formation of the team, and if you win, you'll appear in one of the issues!
