Here's the latest Planet DC2 column, plus details of this week's new releases. Details of previous and future releases can be found on the calendar.
Welcome to Planet DC2!
October 31st is three things. A magical holiday, Halloween. A fifth week day, with things like the House of Mystery, Action Comics long awaited Annual and Faust coming out this day. And, most importantly, my birthday!
Yay!
Now, returning to focus. Lissilambe (Don) is a new member who is writing two titles, Justice League and Danger Trail, both of which I highly recommend. And I had the luck to have a live interview with, him. Here it is, part one of a two parter that will continue next week (he is one hell of a talker):
1. What do you think about the DC2?
I find it very interesting. It's built a very strong, loyal following for certain, and solid feelings of community, they've built and maintained a very good veneer of professionalism for an amateur, hobbyist activity, and it's commendable. Seeing how it continues to grow, adapt, change, it's fun and exciting. I'm looking forward to seeing more of it.
2. What titles do you read from the DC2?
I try to read all of the titles at the moment, though I have chosen (because I'm going this route of trying them all) to start from pretty much a couple of months back, when I became truly involved in the site. Of the titles put out, I am enjoying how Global Guardians and Checkmate have started, with very strong potential and hooks, and I'm quite curious to see them play out. Green Arrow has also gotten off to a great start, and I'm enjoying Suicide Squad and Teen Titans as well. I think my favorite so far has been Weird Western Quarterly. I love obscure characters, and I think DC's western heroes were a wonderfully diverse lot, and I really think Susan has captured the core of these figures and built them up into a special title.
3. How do you feel writing a title with the most powerful characters in the DC2?
Justice League is an astounding writer's challenge. Possibly one of the biggest I've seen. We're writing short stories here, and short story rules are largely along the lines of "Small cast, very few settings, tight contained plot" and really, Justice League in this format violates just about all those rules. So it's a major challenge, and one that excites me. I like to be pushed, I like to have to really work hard on a story, and having to make sure all these big, huge, mythic figures get their moments to shine, and make the plots they deal with big enough to challenge them all, well that's a powerful test of my abilities, and one I look forward to.
4. Why did you introduce more characters?
I wanted to introduce other characters, newer members or wannabe members, so I had people to play with as I wish. There's only so much I can do with the big guys. Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, even people like Atom and Elongated Man, I'm hand-tied with really beating on, since they have to appear more or less as they are in all other projects. So putting in others, lesser lights, most likely those characters only I'd be interested in writing, means I can do things to them, really let loose and play with those characters. It also lets me provide the illusion of "great change" in the stories. If character development, growth, crises are happening to them, then it helps obscure how little of it is affecting the "untouchables". I also want a chance to play with the "super-hero social castes" to some extent. Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Lantern, Superman...they're the top. Atom, Elongated Man, Hawkman (maybe, Hawkgirl for certain), they're the nobility...well-respected by readers and peers, but unable to really break out beyond their station, for any length of time. Then the rest of the rabble...the commoners. Dawn, Kit, and some others I am bringing in, this lets me play with that dynamic, have fun with it.
5. Are there going to be even more new characters like Dawn and Kid Eternity?
Yes, I'm bringing in a few more in the arc following "To See Tomorrow". A pair of characters that will be my biggest challenge yet to make cool and interesting to the readers, I'm sure. And I'll be bringing in Gypsy, a personal favorite that I hope to make fun and interesting. Dawn and Gypsy will be "viewpoint" characters for me. To let the readers get a real close-up, ground view perspective on the "great DC2U pantheon". After that, I'll be sticking to the core cast, these new recruits and bouncing the reserves through as needed, and mixing that up, but my full JL cast will have stabilized after the next set of introductions.
6. Justice League #8, ended somewhat vague and quick. Is this going to build up to something? Something magical?
Will it be magical? I’m going to take the magician’s route and say “a good showman never reveals his secrets” and neither confirm nor deny. I will say that the source of the trouble it leads to will hopefully be a welcome and surprising revelation.
7. Kid Eternity. Wasn’t he in a coma? Or dead?
Yes, yes he was. Back in Flash Annual #1, he was put into a coma and had his powers stripped from him. In his reappearance, he confirmed to Barry that the reports of his death were accurate. Does that make him a ghost? Indeed. How? Some of that will be getting hinted at during the League run, and the rest of that story gets filled in with the Doctor Occult mini-series. Charlie and I have worked hard hammering the answer out, and it should make for a great tale, getting Kid Eternity back in line with his original concept and incarnation.
8. Is Dr. 7 going to appear again? I really liked that character.
He will. I enjoyed writing him more than I expected, so I’ll find another use for him. When exactly, I can’t be sure. But yes, he’s an important in “the big picture” and will definitely be back.
Join us back next week, when we talk about Danger Trail. Meanwhile, read this week's spooky and amazing titles!
