Here's this week's Planet DC2 plus details of this week's new releases at DC2, DC3 and the first titles from our sister site Marvel2. Details of previous and future DC2 releases can be found on the calendar.
Also, thanks to anybody who took part in our recent survey. The results are now posted at www.dc2universe.net/index.cgi?board=openforumforallmembers&action=display&thread=1199577577
Months ago, I had the opportunity to interview another of our members, RocketeerZ, the writer of the Booster Gold title. Here's the interview:
1. What do you think about the DC2?
I'm slightly disappointed in it. I really thought my clothes would be much brighter coming out of the wash. I mean, c'mon... shouldn't a deterg-... Oh wait... you mean the WEBSITE? Sorry, was thinking DC2 was that new fangled detergent on the market!
I think it's great. There's a boatload of talent over here... it's a total rip reading DC characters from a different standpoint than Dan DiDio decrees over at the regular DC Comics. Some of the artwork has been just stunning. It's also just a genuine set of nice people here. It's a fun place to be.
2. Which are your favorite titles?
Right now DETECTIVE COMICS is totally kicking arse. I'm chomping at the bit for new issues of that. WEIRD WESTERN QUARTERLY is always a solid read and I've been looking forward to the 2nd part of the current storyline. FLASH is always fun and I can't wait for that title to come back after a brief hiatus.
Not to mention SUPERMAN: ORDER OF THE PRESIDENT and BATGIRLS both being just really fun reads over in the "fan comics" section.
3. Why did you want to write Booster Gold? Was he your first option, or did you want to write someone else first?
He was. I made two proposals upon trying to get myself a title. Booster Gold was one, Supergirl was the second. Supergirl was already under someone else's radar but Booster was approved.
I've been a huge fan of the character since he came to be back in 1986 (yeah I'm that old). I think the idea behind him is facinating. Think about it... wanting to be both famous and rich, as well as help people... it's a very realistic concept. What I wanted to do was show the side of the character that was always trying to poke through in DC Comics, and that's a guy who has grown enough to realize that the fame and fortune isn't everything.
The funny thing is, I've heard a lot on how much my version is mirroring the current DC Comics version of Booster Gold. The storyline and the ideas I'm writing now are stuff I came up with years ago, long before DC did 52, much less Booster Gold. It's something I thought of way back when DC put out the TIME MASTERS mini series. I'm glad to see the concept of Booster as a time-cop of sorts has come to be, both here and in the regular DC, because that's what I think is a natural place for him to be in.
4. Time travel stories always have the possibilty of becoming too confusing to follow, or end up with things unexplained. Yours, so far, has not. How do you manage this?
Well, I'm glad to hear it hasn't been confusing!
I think one of the biggest problems people have with time travel stories is that they tend to over-think them. They really still follow a natural progession... you just have to make sure you draw solid lines to each "section".
I tend to be a little overly descriptive in my writing (so much that sometimes I think people feel I overdo it and get accused of Bendism or Kevin Smith-itis). While I do overdo the "talky" end of things at times, it does help that many things get covered in my stories so that there tends to be less questions or confusion. At least that's what I like to think.
5.- The character roster has been expanding since the first issue, and there are still some left. Which character do you enjoy writing most?
Yeah... for me that's a good thing, but I have heard the cries of "too much!" also. I like a big roster. I can't help it.
I love writing Booster and Blue Beetle together the most. I just see them as two really, REALLY close friends thrust into the wildest situations you can imagine. That makes for some fun writing.
I can say that once the current arc "Ripping the Future" is done, we'll see an arc with almost NONE of the supporting cast. It'll be mostly just Booster (and Skeets) on their own on that particular mission.
6. Any other future projects?
I'm connected with one BIG (but mostly secret) project on the horizon at DC2. I'm not sure how much I can say about it, but it'll be HUGE. I've been dropping little clues about in each issue of BOOSTER GOLD and there's been a few other places that have also had some big connections to this project. Maybe some people should head back and read some of the older ACTION COMICS and FLASH issues (tease). I have two proposals ready to go to Mark soon, so hopefully at least one of those will come to be.
Also, over at Marvel2 (which is another sister site that Good 'Ol House Of Mystery has started) I'm writing the WHAT IF? title that should see life sometime around March or so. I think everyone should go over there and check it out! (Right Charlie?)
7. Final thoughts, comments, spoilers, something else?
First, I cannot stress how great it has been working with Sylvain Swimer on the Booster series. Having worked in publishing for years, I only WISH I could have worked with artists with HALF the talent and professionalism that Syl has. Mark Bowers has also been a great editor who has a lot of patience with me.
Second, thanks to everyone who has been reading BOOSTER GOLD. I totally welcome any and all comments in how I can make the series better and more fun for those who read (or haven't been reading) it.
As for spoilers, let's see... coming soon in upcoming issues of BOOSTER GOLD? Let's take a page from the book of Geoff Johns like he did at the end of the first issues of JSA and BOOSTER GOLD... How about the following teaser "scenes"? (yeah I know you can't 'see' them, but the dialogue alone should be teaser enough!)
"My world is gone. I guess Superman and I have one more thing in common besides an 'S'. I'm now the last daughter of Earth."
"I'm telling you Booster, I know who stole the stupid thing. It was YOU."
"IT'S COMING RIGHT AT US! EVERYONE SCATTER! SCATTER BEFO-" (cue loud explosion).
"I can tell you this much Booster. You made one major mistake, and that mistake just wiped out an entire universe."
"There's only one thing we can do at this point Skeets. I have to die. We have to go back in time and KILL ME."
Enjoy!
