Here's another edition of Planet DC2, plus details of this week's new releases at DC2, DC3 and Marvel2. Details of previous and future DC2 releases can be found on the calendar.
Why, hello DC2! It's Charlie here filling in for Seb in your friendly neighbourhood Planet DC2! Today we've got an extra special interview with new writer Kevin Feeney, someone you might be familiar with if you've been around the UDCU, DC3, Marvel2, and other sordid websites! Let's cut right to the chase and move onward directly to... the interview!
Charlie: You’re relatively new to the staff at the DC2, tell us a bit about yourself, Kevin!
Kevin: Where to start? I'm a relatively young writer from Ireland who's been active online on message boards and whatnot for a few years- ever since I got deeply into comics, really. I'm a self-confessed comics geek, and my main hobby besides that has always been writing.
C: What books are you writing?
K: I made my debut with "Ultimate Fourth World" on DC3 and followed it up with Fantastic Four over on the Marvel2, and here on the DC3 I'll be writing both the new "New Gods" title starting in April and "Flash" with a tentative start date of May.
C: Seems like you've got yourself on a major New Gods kick, Kevin! Why are you attracted to Jack Kirby's finest?
K: Heh, yes, definitely a Fourth World fan. I'll be honest, Kirby in general has always fascinated me ever since I read Fantastic Four reprints in Marvel's "Essential" editions, and I've always considered the New Gods his greatest creations. What Kirby did through the New Gods was craft a truly epic story which really pit two ideologies against each other- it's about order versus chaos, but interestingly, it's the villains, through Darkseid, who represent "order" and the heroes who represent the "chaos" of freedom. I guess that reversal of normality, plus the sheer scale of the whole saga, is one of the main attractions for me
C: Who’s your favourite New God?
K: Oh, that's an easy one. Darkseid, definitely Darkseid. For me, he's both the best New God and the best DC villain- I mean, he is pure, undiluted evil, obsessed with total control over everything that moves. He has no redeeming factors like Luthor, he's not small-scale like Joker, he is the one New God who is very clearly, very terrifyingly, a God, and I think that's why he will always be the ultimate evil of the DC universe
C: Darkseid is one of my favourite villains too, and I wish that you never came around so I could use him, but hey, what you going to do... Talking of villains, who's your favourite Flash Rogue? And what attracted you to the book?
K: I love the Rogues in general- from Mirror Master to Weather Wizard and with a fondness for Zoom.... but I have to say, for number one, Captain Cold wins every time. It's his rough, down-to-earth attitude which makes him such a great Rogue- Cold isn't the smartest guy in the world, or the most powerful, but he's tough, he has his own twisted sense of morality and he's very dangerous
You'll see a lot more of Cold, and his fellows in "Flash" as the year goes on, picking up from where we last saw them!
C: In a sentence, tell us why we should be reading these books. I dare you.
K: Do I get a sentence each or a sentence for all of them and- aw crap, there goes my sentence.
C: Fair enough!
K: No, but seriously, in a sentence each:
You should read my "Flash" because it pushes the boundaries of where the series has been so far, with far out stories with big villains, time travelling, plenty of Rogues and more speedsters than ever before!
You should read New Gods because it's an epic for our times, one single giant act in the cosmic story of the New Gods, taking avenues never explored before with the characters, and very much a spiritual successor to DC2's Mega-hit "Apokolips Imperative".
C: What do you hope to bring with the titles?
K: Mostly, I want to bring a sense of progress and motion. No book excites by sticking to the status quo, and in both titles I'll be building off existing plot threads of other writers to move both sagas onwards while staying firmly anchored in what's come before. On another note, I hope to bring a sense of fun, excitement and unpredictability to Flash, and a sense of epic scale to New Gods
For both titles, I also have long-term plans, so nothing will be throwaway or pointless, and the two series will be moving towards some big things!
C: What are you wanting to do in the future?
K: Between New Gods and Fourth World, I have my dream books right here! Long-term, I hope to continue writing both until either I'm kicked out or I start writing stories I'm not happy with- whatever comes first! Beyond these two titles, I'm tossing around ideas for a Zauriel miniseries when I have time to explore another of my favourite characters, and I'm hoping to some day get a crack at the World's Greatest Super-Heroes, the Justice League of America.
C: Rookie mistake there, Kevin, there's no "Of America" there yet... I hate it when people make that mistake, because I think I start doing it by accident! Anyway, anything you want to promote or say before I run away crying?
K: Yes; I want to thank our gallant EiC Mark for taking a leap of faith in letting me launch New Gods without too much experience on DC2, I want to thank you as well, Charlie, for being yourself and getting me the Flash gig! As for promoting- the Marvel2 is still out there with some phenomenal titles done by some fantastic writers and artists, and I heartily recommend EVERYONE to check it out!
Oh, and another request- can I get a new editor? I have this idiot on New Gods and Flash, guy's an amateur really...
C: You're fired.
Look out for New Gods to debut pretty soon at a DC2 near you! That's pretty much it this week, but if you're lucky you'll see more Planet DC2 next week, but in the meantime, I hear I've written two books this week. Weird that.
Check out Action Comics #28 and Wonder Woman #22!
Thanks!
Charlie.
