Here's another edition of Planet DC2, plus details of this week's new releases at DC2, DC3 and Marvel2. Details of previous and future DC2 releases can be found on the calendar.
It's time for Planet DC2!:
Tired of the never-ending interviews featuring only writers? Wondering about what other things happen in this magical factory of dreams? Well, here is your chance to know about another fellow member, Goldk, who besides plotting Action Comics, is also an artist!
Read it and enjoy:
How did you find the DC2?
I bought a cosmic treadmill on eBay.
Actually the one and only time I visited the DC message boards I saw a link for it there. I Read Dave's first Superman story and was hooked. I sent him a sample drawing and begged him to let me play.
What do you think about it?
I think about it quite a lot actually. It's great fun and I've made some great friends here. Before I found this, this, "Fortress of Comictude" (just go with me) I was drawing maybe a few times a year. Now I'm drawing nearly every day.
Which ones are your favorite books?
If it weren't for time constraints everything would be my favorite. and there's some I'm going to read because I like the character. like I'll probably read a Superman book just because, but I'm probably not going to read an Elongated Man special.
I like what Mr. Burchette does with the Outsiders and Mr. Walsh with JL. Mr. HoM captures my imagination with everything he does. No one weaves a tale like Mr. Charlton, who somehow manages to update old ideas without losing their original flavor.
My favorites right now are Outsiders and JL. But everything on the site is so well written.
Can you tell us about your work in Action Comics?
Well, I hope I didn't screw it up TOO much. I believe that I may have been duped into that gig.
"Oh here, write a little bit of this. Here write a little bit more. Hey that's good, here ya go, here's a whole book a month!"
I have so much admiration for the guys that do this every month without fail on this site.
I'm coming up on the end of my run and I can finally breathe!
Right now Mr. HoM has graciously agreed to write the story with me plotting. I don't know how long we can stand each other doing that, but we'll see what happens.
We both have some ideas for some cool things down the road. Stay tuned, Same Super-time same Super-channel!
Who is your favorite fellow artist in here?
That's like asking me which ice cream I like the best.
Ramon's speed totally amazes me, and his colors are da' bomb!
Craig's art is very polished, very professional! And the way he handles a brush is amazing! He was the reason for my brief stint with a brush.
Riz's colors and his light and shadows are wonderful, he knows just how to evoke an emotion with his art.
It's hard to pick a favorite 'cause everybody on the site does such a great job, you can tell that everyone is always striving to do their best and each artist has their own flavor.
I guess some days I'm in the mood for a Mischeif with nuts and some days, I'm in the mood for a Ramon with sprinkles.
What can you tell us about Ramon, the art director? Is he as crazy as he looks and writes?
You ever been to a comic book convention and seen that guy at the artist's table, all sullen and withdrawn, cringing at the thought of yet another fan-boy asking him for the one millionth time how to draw boobies?
Well that's nothing like Ramon. Ramon is a great guy who has always been there to help me, when I can't get something to look right or to do a quick color job or fill in for me. He gives constructive criticism when asked and is always open to the same. Ramon is a great talent, and I'm sure we'll see his name in lights somewhere soon. (was that right right Ramon? Did I do good....please not the cat-o-nine again.)
How do you normally draw? When? How? Do you do something before? Anything that might tell us more about your artistic commitment to this site?
I usually get a PM from the writer, either detailing the cover they want to see, or the story itself, for me to pick a scene from.
Depending on how much time I have or how many "layouts" I see, I may do several roughs, scan them and send them to the writer for their input.
Once we've decided on what we want to see. I use either a hard lead pencil or a non-photo blue pencil to do a light sketch, a little tighter than the rough.
I like drawing big so I usually work on 11"x17" with 10"x15" actual drawing area. This reduces down to a comic size page.
It's at this point I usually go find references for characters or other objects if any.
Then I tighten up the pencils more, adding some details, crosshatching, things like that, to get an idea where the dark areas need to go, what direction the light is coming from, that kind of stuff.
Then I break out the trusty sharpie and start inking. Large blacks areas first and then the fine lines till I work my way through the whole picture.
Then, cause I don't own a 11x17 scanner (EXPENSIVE!) I go to the local staples and reduce the pic to 8.5 x11 then I bring it to my work where I scan it into Photo-shop and add the colors and title!
That's all there is to it!
How is that pet shop going?
It's going OK, it really gets in the way of my time on here, though. I may have to quit the pet store if it continues to interfere. Check my website and blog...
