Here's another edition of Planet DC2, plus details of this week's new releases at DC2, DC3 and Marvel2. Details of previous and future DC2 releases can be found on the calendar.
Hello, and welcome to Planet DC23!!!
Welcome to this week's column. Today, we've got you an interview with Don Walsh, the third admin of DC2's sister site, the DC3. Here it is:
1) You are the third admin of the DC3. How does that make you feel? What makes you different from the other two (besides the fact that they quit?)
Well, I feel pretty honored to be asked to fill the void, for sure. DC3 is still a small part of the overall community, but I feel it's important, and can grow into a valuable asset of the expanded DC2 Universe. I'm still new to the whole place, relatively speaking, so to be approached by Charlie to jump into the breach and help him out was a nice feeling. I hope to live up to the trust, and to the standards of the entire group, now stretched over three sites.
What makes me different? I think I have a more organized approach to what DC3 means and how it's established. I think David had a great concept and jumped into it boldly, and made some good foundations, but his attentions were split between the new site, the DC2 and his personal life (screwy thing that it is) getting in the way. Charlie maintained the site well, but he never felt comfortable in the role, and when the chance and inspiration to work on Marvel2 appeared, I was happy to take over the DC3 to let him do that.
I love the old DCU multiverse, pre-Crisis, and the chance to build a version of that excites me. I think I have the opportunity the other two didn't quite get to make the concept gel, and to take off, and I hope I can help it reach a more complete potential. I also have my good friend Tim Abramo, the computer whiz, to help me with administration and the tech stuff that I sorely lack skills in. he's the man responsible the the "Newly Added Issues" bar (NAI for short), a tradition we brought over from our old UDCU site (now the exciting Earth-Five of DC3), that seems to have really caught on. So I think I'm different from the previous admins largely because I have a stronger chance to take the vision created and make it actually happen. I couldn't be doing it without that start though.
2) What do you want to accomplish with the DC3?
I have three main goals: first, I want to grow the readership and participation of the DC3. Not an easy job, as the admins of all three sites can tell you. Participation in particular, is hard to grow. But we're working on that, and we'll not give up the ghost.
Second, I want to make sure that the DC3 is indeed the viable DC2U multiverse: that this is the first and best stop for people to go to if they want to read parallel world material of heroes famous and infamous and obscure. That writers and artists know they can draw on this rich tapestry of Earths we're all building over here to add to the depth of the DC2 titles when the stories there warrant. I believe we're making a first, big step in that direction with our participation in Zero Hour. Out this summer, Pat and Charlie and Chris were kind enough to make some last minute alterations and tailoring to their epic to fit in the worlds of the DC3 (some of them anyway) and help to cement the notion that these really are a part of the DC2U whole.
Third, I want to make sure that my own personal line, Earth-Five, the "Ultimate" line, continues to be a strong and gripping world on its own merits, growing, expanding, and offering interesting twists to the heroes you know, drawing on the various mythoi of each of these great DC characters, and at the same time streamlining it into an easy to jump into modern telling of their tales. I think James Steel exemplifies this approach best of all at this point, with his Ultimate Batman and Robin series. Batman is Bruce Wayne, millionaire playboy by day, troubled Dark Knight Detective by night, and Alfred at his side. All the elements of the classic Batman are in there, but added to it are new takes on classic villains; Carrie Kelly, the Dark Knight Returns Robin, as Bruce's first Robin; Warren McGinness as one of her friends (along with Stephanie Brown, Tim Drake and others); Penguin as manipulative rogue running for mayor; all of these great elements refashioned from across the Batman universe into a new and easy to grab onto whole. The goal of all our writers in the Ultimate line.
I go on about Earth-Five since it's "mine" in a sense, but I do not want to take away from the great work on other Earths by great writers and artists as well: Earth-Two, by Borize and Brian and David, who have built a world where the heroes age and the new generation rises; Earth-Three, David's brilliantly-crafted world where evil rules and the Crime Syndicate reigns supreme; Earth-Four, where John Elbe will be unleashing new takes on the great Charlton heroes; Earth-S, my own Fawcett Earth, where Captain Marvel IS Earth's Mightiest Mortal; and Earth-X, a Tangent-style Earth where the old names lead very new lives. And more and more.
3) In your opinion, what makes the DC3 different than the Elseworlds?
Elseworlds is a wonderful exercise in speculation, of what if. In my mind, Elseworlds are for those stories that just can't really exist and interact with the canon DC2U. The actual Elseworlds line from DC was where you found the Justice League in the Old West, or in a fantasy realm; where Batman was a vampire, or Superman was raised by Soviets, where Bruce Wayne finds a Green Lantern power ring; in the DC2, Shadows of Shazam exemplifies this approach well, as does Ellen's Batman: Lost to the Night. They are limited and self-contained tales that really should sit on their own, as a wonderful display of imagination and never really interact with a canon universe, which I feel would detract from their unique nature.
Parallel earths are a mainstay of speculative fiction of all stripes, and in the superhero universe, they're very nearly a must have. In the DCU, they've a grand old tradition of providing a wonderful alternative narrative of the characters, but also a chance to interact and have grand adventures with the central "spine" of the multiverse. That's the DC3. DC3 may change up some names and faces and costumes and ages and locations, but ultimately, it's a standard sort of superhero line, with all the grand tropes and cliches and "markers" that identify themselves as such. When Earth-Two teams up with Earth-One (the DC2 Earth), neither universe is left detracted, since they're both great four-color, epic and over the top heroic fun. DC3 is where you get parallel Earths that can happen, that can cross over with each other and the Earth-One and not lose its valuable flavor. Indeed, that flavor is enhanced by light doses of this interaction, and the internal narrative of each Earth (Including the main one) is enhanced by the characters' knowledge of the greater multiverse. To make "League of Justice" (an elseworlds that finds the JLA as a Fantasy realm adventure), "Justice Riders" (Wild West JLA), "In Darkest Night" (Bruce with a GL ring), Batman: Lost to the Night, (or worse, others like Watchmen, Kingdom Come, JSA: The LIberty Files, and the like) mere parallels of the main Earth dilutes the power of those stories. For them, those Earths need to be the only ones that do and ever will exist for those characters.
Hope that explains my take on it.
4) Any major events happening at the DC3 soon?
Well, we're still in our building stages. Mightiest Mortals (of Earth-S fame) has the longest run right now, at issue eight. That said, there are some interesting developments on the horizon. A new Earth will be joining the ranks, with Riz and a new friend working on some familiar characters set in an ancient time period (I won't say more since it's still in the planning stages, but I'm excited, and those with a keen insight may figure out what's coming there); Earth-Two writers and artists are discussing their first big event, set for some time next year; Earth-Five will be planning its first big event for the fall, spearheaded by James Steel, and bringing in Ultimate Luthor in a big, big way. Before then though, next month "Ultimate All-Stars Giant-Sized Special #1" will see the Golden Age Wonder Woman, Queen Hippolyta, in her last costumed adventure set in the mid-Eighties, alongside long-time friend and agent of the IADC Steve Trevor, and acts as a zero issue for the Ultimate Wonder Woman series coming up in June (co-plotted by myself and Samantha Chapman, written by Sam and covers by Catsmeow, exciting new specialist artist in superheroines of the DC2/3); a new issue of Crime Syndicate is coming up; Earth-Two titles are really beginning to pick up speed in their second month of storylines; and on Earth-S, Speeding Bullet introduces Bulletman to the Fawcett world and helps to lead into the exciting two-part finale of Mightiest Mortals' first year, which includes the debut of two new heroes and the return of an old one. So lots of excitement milling about in the next few months, absolutely.
5) Can you tell us about your writting projects (Danger Trail and the others)?
Over in Danger Trail, I'll be wrapping up "The Nation of Murder Affair" with newcomers to my narrative, Argent St. Cloud (forebear of Silver St. Cloud of Batman fame) and Michael Gallant (who's not quite dead yet, a chance to see his pre-Captain Triumph career). Following that will be the Danger Trail annual that starts to bring various threads together set in place at the beginning, involving the Ineffable Libram and Bennett's diary and the villainous, immortal Vandal Savage (utilizing material from the never-released Savage Tales, a Vandal Savage special). This leads into the exciting three-part storyline to round out Danger Trail's first year, a story titled "The Stolen Myth Affair", includes the return of Doctor Occult and Rima. And for those fans of Super Friends who remember Rima, and remember who she often teamed up with, then yes...a very special guest-star in Danger Trail 10-12 teams up with her there as well. Plus more of the mysteries involving Rose Psychic, her interaction with the St. Clouds, Harriet Cooper (also of Batman fame) and her mysterious quest and connections, and the return of the Hammer from Hell!
In Justice League, I return to the writing chores with #17, after Susan's Wild West time travel storyline, and jump into a tale of extra-solar arms smuggling and a classic League foe, as well as introducing Gypsy (of the not-so-lamented JL Detroit era), as well as two other surprise additions. If you thought I pushed my luck introducing Manitou Dawn, just wait until you see what I try to pull here. LOL After that will be Justice League Annual #2, co-plotted with Brian and including the debut of the Lord of Time (what's that? But he's debuted already? heh...just wait and see) and a wedding! We have a couple of smaller stories, and then we bring the back-burner storyline that's been running since my very first issue, #8, up front, and double-hot and reveal the secrets of Injustice Unlimited!
I have more over at DC3, including Ultimate All-Stars, the WWII-era superhero stories, including the JSA in their first battle with Baron Blitzkrieg and Ian Karkull; a tale that finds Johnny Thunder, Sandman and Atom facing the consequences of Japanese internment, in the form of Tsunami; and we round out their first year with a clash with Wotan that leaves the JSA depleted and seeking new recruits and wait until you see who joins. In the back-up stories, we have Starman and LIberty Belle meeting with Johnny Quick and the debut of the Mist; Liberty Belle seeking out the mysterious Doctor Mid-Nite and terrifying Tarantula; and Hawkgirl and Wildcat facing the Gentleman Ghost with some help from a man who knows evil.
And at Marvel2 I'll be starting The Avengers this month! Come and check that out, along with all the other great titles being written there, Charlie's gathered some great names to work on some cool titles, and people need to be reading them.
6)Any future projects, final comments, thoughts, something?
Mark and I are discussing future projects, something for me to work on in the near future, but we've been hammering out various ideas and we'll see what comes of it all. Mark's been very patient as we work on this, and it's to his credit that the work that's done here by myself and others gets its due. Kudos to a great editor-in-chief. I hope more people keep reading both sites, and especially DC3. We have some writers only to be found there, and they deserve a chance to be read, so come on over and check them out. We also have some artists that have some great work, and again, only to be found there, and I can't thank them enough for their work. the only way I can come close to the thanks these creative people deserve is by calling out loud and clear to all of you here at DC2: come and check it out! DC2 has high-quality stories and covers, and DC3 has done everything in their power to live up to that standard, so come on over!
Meet us next time!
