Here's another edition of Planet DC2, plus details of this week's new releases at DC2, DC3 and Marvel2. Details of previous and future DC2 releases can be found on the calendar.
Welcome to the Planet DC2!!!
Yes, another interview. I know you love them. This time, we have Batman writer, Grant LaFleche, who is going to talk to us about an upcoming arc in the Batman titles. Read it now:
1) So, you edited and now write one of the Batman titles. How does it feel working with such an iconic character?
Oh man. Does the word "geekgasam" mean anything you to?
Batman is, so far as I am concerned, the single most interesting character in comic books. It's been said that Odysseus is the most complete man in all fiction. Hamlet wasn't a complete man, neither were the other great hero figures in our literature. I think Batman might come close to Odysseus in terms of exploring the full gamut of what it means to be a human being (writ large of course.)
Unlike a figure like Superman, who is pretty straight forward and simple, Batman is a mess of contradictions. His motivations are at once horribly selfish and short sighted while being completely noble and epic. He's not a super hero in the classic comic book sense of it like Superman or the Flash or somebody is. He's a hero in the Greek sense of the word. Which means he often does things that might not be considered "heroic" to many people. But he is endlessly fascinating.
He's also bizarrely flexible. Obviously, my preferred interpretation is along the Frank Miller side of things, but Batman also works as camp comedy. A mysterious detective. Even as a more standard superhero.
I'm not terribly interested in characters or stories that say, in effect, "this is the hero and he is good because he is a hero." That is sort of self defeating. I am more interested in the reasons why characters do what they do. As Batman might say, everything has a reason and I want to explore those reasons, even for fairly minor decisions a character would make. And Batman is the kind of character where you can mine for gold all day along and always find something interesting.
Batman was the first comic I ever read, and continues to be an endless source of entertainment for me. So to be able to explore the character, even in fan fiction, is a real treat.
2)There has been talk about an event in the Batman titles. Can you tell us about it?
Yeah, the DC2 Batman is about to undergo a pretty drastic change. We are currently bringing our Ra's Al Ghul storyline to a close in Detective #30 and Batman #30. The end of Batman #30 will trigger the single biggest change in the Batman titles since DC2 starting running Batman stories.
By way of background, the current story arc is something I've been building toward since I starting my Batman writing duties with the City of Crime mini. The seeds of the Ra's storyline were planted then and have been building primarily in Batman ever since.
For those who have not been following the story so far, it involves the introduction of the DC2 version of Ra's Al Ghul. I think we have a fairly interesting take on him that is a bit different than the classic Denny O'Neil Ra's. Ra's is making a big play to take control of Gotham, which pits him naturally against Batman - his former student and surrogate son. So it's not just a conflict between hero and villain, but between father and son and all the emotional baggage that implies.
The story also involves the manipulation and evolution of The Joker. Ra's was able to use The Joker as a puppet and when the strings are cut, the consequences are nothing short of disastrous for Gotham City. I think that Brian, who is writing Detective, and I have pushed The Joker into a much more vicious and scary character than he has been so far in DC2. He's not played for laughs at all. He's a horror movie come to life.
And finally it's a story exploring Batman himself. Who is this guy? Why is he the way he is? If you go back and read Charlie's initial run on Batman - which I recommend everyone do...seriously, go do it now!....one of the very cool things he did was to establish Batman's world in Gotham. When he left the title, Batman was in a very good place - well for Batman anyway. With him "good" is a relative term. Anyway, we've been pulling on those threads of that "good" world for a while now and in the current arc everything comes apart for Batman. From a storytelling point of view, it allows us to take a look at this extraordinary character in extraordinary circumstances.
There are some sub-plots that are important as well. We see the continuing development of Tim Drake on his path to being the next Boy Wonder and also take a hard look at Batman's relationship with Jim Gordon. Just exactly how does a cop work with an outlaw who breaks the law a thousand time a night?
Plus we sort of kick the living hell out of Gotham City.
3) How many issues will it be? Any tie-ins?
The current Batman arc, titled A Mirror, Darkly, began in Batman #27 and runs to the double size Batman #30 at the end of this month, which closes the Ra's story line.
In Detective, the story got underway in Detective #27, but really picked up steam in #28 and will end with an atomic denotation in this week's double-sized Detective #30 - which I am reading right now and let me tell you it is going to blow your minds. It's one of Brian's best stories.
After Batman #30 we are going see ripples through all the Bat-books. Obviously the impact is going to be seen in Batman and 'Tec in a big way.
But we are also going to see very important ramifications in Nightwing, which will be tied thematically very close to Batman and Tec for a while. Ellen's fantastic work in Nightwing will actually drive the Bat-books forward.
Also of note is a Jason Todd mini coming out. It's written by Charlie and Ramon and I think it's really going to impress our readers. I've read a little bit of it already and I have to tell you these guys are bringing their A-game. Their story is tonally related to my work, particularly City of Crime, but is completely fresh and original. The little bit I have seen was just fantastic and could be a DC2 classic by the time it's done. If Batman: Trauma was the direct sequel to City of Crime this mini could be seen as the 3rd part of a trilogy bringing us the next stage of Jason Todd's troubled life.
4) What characters will be involved in this storyline?
Well the current arc in Batman really turns on three characters: Batman, Ra's Al Ghul and the Joker. As the story gets near the end of Batman #30, Jim Gordon plays a bigger role.
In Tec, we get more Joker and lots of Tim Drake. If I can go off on a bit of a tangent here, Brian is doing a great job on Detective and his version of Tim Drake is just fabulous. It's hard to imagine anyone else writing Tim for DC2 right now - I've used Tim once or twice, but it never has the same vibe as when Brian does it. He has a very clear vision of the character which makes Tim seem very real.
When A Mirror, Darkly, is done we are going to see a much larger role for Dick Grayson and Jason Todd as well.
We also get a healthy dose of two villains who are both crazier than a crap house rat: Two-Face and Black Mask.
And of course Alfred is there and what would a Ra's Al Ghul story be without Talia?
5) Any issues we might need to read to understand this better?
As I said before the threads of A Mirror, Darkly go back to my first DC2 Batman series "City of Crime", which laid a foundation for everything I've done on Batman since. From there the Trauma storyline that ran in Batman #21 to #25 and Agoge in Batman #26.
Of course a reader can just jump on with Batman #27 and Detective #27 and join us on the ride.
Back issue wise, Charlie actually introduced us to Talia Al Ghul way back in Batman #11 - and some of the fallout of her involvement in Gotham City that far back gets addressed in Batman #30.
On the Detective Comics side, I would recommend going back to read Brian's and Charlie's Black Mask stories in Batman #15 and #16 and Detective #15 and #16. Also I would highly recommend reading the introduction of the DC2 Two-face by Brian in Detective #17 and #18.
So in a lot of ways, the threads of our Ra's story go pretty deep.
6) Are there other projects you might be working on?
I'm actually pretty focused on Batman at the moment. I would like to do another Lobo story in the near future. He's just so damned over the top and a blast to write. I've also been kicking around an idea for an Aquaman mini, but nothing has been discussed or approved at this point.
7) Final comments, thoughts, spoilers?
Well, I want to send some props to the cover artists on Batman and 'Tec. They've captured the sense of chaos and destruction the stories have been about. Each time I see a new cover I'm impressed.
Also, I would be remiss not to say a big thanks to John "Romans Empire" Elbe, my long suffering Batman editor. His support, along with our fearless leader Mark, has been a huge help on the Batman stories I've done.
And also, I cannot say enough about Brian's work on Detective. The Ra's story would not have worked without solid stories in Tec. And working with him has been a blast.
You know, after I initially worked out the story and where it would end up, Brian was on board right away. He and I banged out the general plot details and since then it's been like playing jazz. I am a horn player and there is nothing more fun than improvising with a really good musician. Working with Brian is like that. We have a general story structure we are working from, but each of us approaches the stories our own way. We've been playing off each other's themes and ideas as each issue comes out. So it's like I see something he's done and not only want to play off that in my story, but I think it makes my stories better because I want to keep up with the guy!
My hope has been to really bring something exciting and different to the Bat-books. We are headed for a pretty radical change for the DC2 Batman so I hope everyone reads Detective #30 and Batman #30 - both double-sized issues that will kick off a whole new direction for Batman. It's basically the perfect time to jump into the Bat-books.
As for what that direction will be - I'm not going to spoil it. But there are some hints, thanks to Ramon's great artwork at the end of Batman #28 (and Ramon's animated signature) that you should definitely check out.
Well guys, that is all. I have to be honest, and say this is one of the best interviews I've had, and it only makes me want to read this issues more. So, do yourselves a favor and read the stories.
