Here's another edition of Planet DC2, plus details of this week's new releases at DC2, DC3 and Marvel2. Details of previous and future DC2 releases can be found on the calendar.
Welcome to this hijacked session of Planet DC2. We kidnapped the regular columnist and are holding him hostage to see who wants him back. When I say we, it is meant as Mischief and KrystaleDragon. So let's kick off this interview.
As we sit here in the cyberspace offices of DC2Universe, one might actually wonder one main thing: HAVE YOU GOT MULTIPLE PERSONALITY DISORDER OR WHAT???
Mischief: (Laughter) Easy answer is no...well most of the time no. I created this account so me and my wife could actually browse it at our leisure. I thought it would be stupid to have separate accounts for both of us to log in with. Every time we open our Internet Explorer, DC2's page is one of three pages that automatically opened. And we are forever logged in. So to clear the confusion for all: MISCHIEF is the husband that is the artist/part-time writer. KrystaleDragon is the wife that is the writer/part time editor.
Who was the nut that sucked you into this wonderful cyberworld of fan fiction?
Mischief: Blame it all on Brian. I saw a post that he had written on www.Newsarama.com. I saw that he had a link in the signature section of the post. In hoping that it might be a link to an adult only type of site, I clicked on it and to my disappointment and delight I found DC2. Now the screwball that threw me into the basement that is the Art Dept, with those fiercely talented artist such as Ramon, Roy, Craig, Jim, Scott, Riz, Brandon, Sly and others that escape my memory at the moment, that guy was House Of Mystery.(THANKS, CHARLIE!!! I MEAN THAT TOO) Talk about being scared ****less. These guys are so talented that, hell, I'm afraid to post my stuff against their work.
Quit cryin’ and stop the [beep]ing [eep] kissing, you [beep]in’ bum. Let’s keep it moving, you did three covers for Charlie and Action Comics…
Mischief: Yes I did...
Don’t [beep]in’ cut me off! One more time and I’ll tell Dragon to beat you.
Mischief: WHAT...She ain't beatin'...(Mischief is slapped in the back of his head by his wife.)
Thank you. You actually wrote a bit on Action Comics #15…but that’s not important…cuz Caesar sucks and Dave is writing his death scene as we speak.
Mischief: What???
Just messing with you (DAVE PM ME ABOUT THAT STORY). So what hooked in the Dragon???
KrystaleDragon: Well the ability to write stories involving my favorite DC characters.
How did you get involved with the behind the scene stuff at DC2?
Krystledragon: I got involved by editing a few issues of the Black Lightning/Static mini-series. The main reason for that was my husband doing the covers for the series. Soon after I got to be the editor of Aquaman(soon to return with the talented Masoud ‘Crow’ House at the helm) and Batman Beyond in Elseworlds(Hopefully to be returning to a regular).
Fast forward to the end of 2007, you had only done how many covers and how many stories written between the two of you?
Mischief: I had actually drawn more covers than what were posted. Two covers for Action with a variant for #17. I loved that issue. Five for BL and Static. Great series too. One cover for Rogues Gallery that I drew over Crow's layout with Ramon's coloring. That issue was my solo writing debut. So that's nine covers. Thats not including the four for Firestorm, the four for Shazam! and two Black Adam's Rogues Gallery stories. KrystaleDragon had written a story for DC2's Christmas Special based on a Christmas Carol. And we are proudly the current writers of Shazam! starting back with issue #7.
So you are writing the Shazam! series…why would you want to work together?
Mischief: Well I really wanted to write something with my wife. Pretty much most of the main titles were already taken. All except Shazam! We thought, ‘Hey we should [beep] with Shazam! I, myself, never really followed any of the past Captain Marvel series, but because of DC's 52 series, we were really interested in Black Adam. I loved what Geoff Johns did with him in JSA. So I instructed the wife to read the previous six issues and I would work on a plot for introducing Isis.
So did that plot include using Caesar?
Mischief: Yeah, it did
So you’re the idiot that wanted to use Caesar…why???
Mischief: Well I needed a mystical character and didn't want to bother anyone else about using characters like Zatanna or Doc Fate for our story. Plus I didn't want Caesar to just simply be forgotten in DC2. Hell I had created a history for the character and had started writing a story to explain his origin, but that was never completed. So this is a chance to raise his stock and show some continuity in Shazam! Making some mentions of his time in Metropolis and stuff.
Now back to Isis. The Goddess Found storyline was her introduction into DC2 and really who did the research for the story???
Mischief: Well to be honest the Dragon did a lot of research into the actual history of the Queen Pharaoh Hatshepsut. I wanted to have Hatshepsut and Black Adam connected somehow. I wanted to really go back into the past of Teth-Adam and how he was imprisoned in the scarab that Theo Adam would find many years later.
Krystaledraon: Researching information can be quite fun to do. I know that Mischief found out a lot of interesting things along the way too. So that was a plus side to writing this story.
How the hell did you manage to get a DC Comics' Exclusive artist to do a cover for Shazam! #9???
Krystaledragon: Well, the 'Chief's brother went to high school with Justiniano. The 'Chief and I have bumped into him at the mall and restaurants. It wasn't till I joined www.myspace.com that I started a friendship with him. See Justiniano is a native of the city where the 'Chief was born. I would correspond with him and joke around via messages with him. Finally, when we where first thinking of writing the Goddess Found storyline, we both looked to Justiniano's image of Isis for inspiration. I’ll send him a copy of the stories that we write. It's a relief for him to read a story just for fun. So with that said, he is just a good friend of ours, who just happens to be a comic book artist.
I believe that the readers have noticed that on the covers that you have been doing recently, you have credits on them. Why the hell are you doing that???
Mischief: I know that I started doing it on Shazam! #7. It was the first issue that we were doing together, so I wanted to put it on the covers as a warning(LOL). This is not your typical story. Hell I thought the first response to the story would have been that we had screwed up Shazam! and that we should burn at the stake. And no one will mistake this run for something else. Plus I figured I’ll give Mark his dues on the cover, that way people familiar with the other books that he edits would check it out. I'm also doing that over on Firestorm, but it's a bit different. I'm looking to make sure each title cover that I do is different from the other. The reason that they are black and white...
SHUT UP!!! Moving right along, are we done seeing Caesar in Shazam!
Mischief: Maybe we’ll bring him back, because we know how much Dave loves him. Hey, at least he's not on the cover. (Mischief gets hit in the head with a stapler.) OUCH!!! Brian, I found your stapler. Dave had it.
Dave didn’t throw it…I DID…(Uneasy Silence) What do you have in store after Goddess Found?
Mischief: After Goddess Found, we have plans for The Big Red Cheese's partner...not his sidekick. In the end, the Shazam! status quo won’t be the same. We plan on re-introducing a few characters and do a DC2 introduction for one character that was on our list of characters to work on.
OK...WHAT ABOUT BLACK ADAM???
Mischief: Black Adam's future will continue as we are writing something that might appear in Shazam! as a back up story or in future Rogues Gallery issues. We plan to move him forward. Read Rogues Gallery #9 to see what I mean about moving him forward.
So you two are planning to hijack Rogues Gallery...hold on...HEY YOU, TIED UP IN THE CORNER, PIPE DOWN BEFORE WE TOSS YOU IN THE CLOSET WITH DANIEL SUMMERS. I'M TRYING TO INTERVIEW THIS CAESAR-LOVIN' WANNABE WRITER. Okay, anything else you wanna say before Mark kicks you two back into the basement.
Mischief: Well I finally made my DC3 cover debut with Ultimate Catwoman…written by Jay Zirron, and the Dragon is working hard on collaborating with another talented individual on a mini-series soon for DC2. She can’t say much about it, but she will be lighting a fire under his butt soon. All Mischief needs to do is a cover for Marvel2 and he’ll be all set. And we are both looking to be producing some fanfic over at Jay Zirron’s Independent Comic Universe. Dragon hopes it won't be too far, far away from now. I plan on going solo for my project too. Plus we got more in store for Shazam! coming soon.
Oh no Mark is here...(HE EXTENDS HIS RIGHT UP TOWARDS THE CEILING AND MAGICALLY A LIGHTNING BOLT APPEARS ON HIS CHEST AND A WHIP OF LIGHTNING FORMS IN HIS HAND.) Good thing this interviewer is a figment of Mischief’s imagination…I ain’t goona get a whuppin’, but Mischief and Krystaledragon are gonna get it.
