Here's the return of Planet DC2, plus details of this week's new releases at DC2, DC3 and Independent Comics. Details of previous and future DC2 releases can be found on the calendar.
Welcome back to Planet DC2, this week featuring an interview that House Of Mystery (Detective Comics, Wonder Woman, DC2 Showcase, too many others to mention) conducted with writer Kevin Feeney (The Flash, New Gods).
Charlie: Kevin, what aren't you writing nowadays? Or to better ask a question of you, what book are you wanting to be on right now?
Kevin: It certainly feels like I'm writing a lot, particularly when deadlines fast approach, but no, it's still only two books! To answer the question, I suspect my answer is the same as that of many on the site - it remains my goal to work on the World's Greatest Heroes and write Justice League!
Charlie: Like that'll ever happen! Right, so you're writing The Flash right now, and I hear you've got some exciting stuff coming up soon, are you wanting to share a bit? Or are you going to be a selfish guy and leave us wanting?
Kevin: Well, as anyone who's been reading the Flash knows, big, huge, humongously massive changes are ahead for the Flash which will affect the book for some time to come. And it all stems from one not so little story which starts next month with Flash #30
Charlie: Why should I care, Kevin? Ignoring the fact that I'm the editor, *cough*, what can you say right now that will make me want to read this book?
Kevin: Read the book right now because it's beginning the biggest, most important Flash story EVER on the DC2 - yes, EVER. I know the real-life DC love to hype up their products as much as they can but this isn't so much hyperbole as a statement of fact - the Flash after this story will be a very different book to the Flash before this story, and you should catch the changes as they happen!
Charlie: To be honest, Kevin, DC hasn't been delivering with The Flash recently. Wally vanished, Bart died, Wally came back, and nothing was really that different. With Barry coming back, do you think the DC2 Flash will get a bit more attention?
Kevin: You're absolutely right in saying that DC hasn't been delivering on the Flash lately, but I'd argue that's a lack of clear direction and focus. The reason the Flash has lagged so much is because they change focus every few issues - but that's not the case on the DC2. This book has been working towards this since I came on with issue 24, and elements have been laid that tie into this story all the way since 0. Unlike DC, we have a solid direction and know exactly what we're doing to get there - and unlike the DCU, I fully intend for the changes to stick! That said, I do of course hope that the return of Barry in the DCU inspires our readers to give some much-needed attention over to our scarlet speedster on the DC2 - because the DC2 knew years before the DCU who the REAL Flash was!
Charlie: Heh, okay. So, what is this story about anyway?
Kevin: In a nutshell, it's the Flash against the Reverse Flash for the very first time on the DC2. Two of the Flash's oldest enemies have found out his secret identity. His family have come under attack by the mysterious Eobard Thawne, who, unknown to Barry, has united his worst enemies under himself for an unknown agenda. And on top of it all, his wife Iris is about to give birth. This story opens with the Reverse Flash making his opening attack on Barry's family - an attack with tragic consequences. It's Barry Allen against every foe he's ever faced, led by the deadliest enemy of all - one he's never faced. At stake are his cities, his wife, his son, his friends, and his unborn daughter. And it will be his darkest hour. Beyond that, the only other information I'll disclose is the title -"Legacy of the Lightning".
Charlie: I'm quaking! So, it'd be safe to assume all generations of the Flash play a pivotal role?
Kevin: The story is very much about all generations of Flash - including those yet to come - and the idea of legacy is central to the story, but it does focus on Barry Allen in particular, for reasons that are made clear in the story itself.
Charlie: Excellent! Now, you think this is the most important Flash story on the DC2, right? What standard do you hold that to? What stories have really grabbed you and refused to let you go?
Kevin: There's some tough competition on the DC2 - "Time Flies" and "Rogue State" are the two stories which really leap to mind here. But though I love both stories, I'd argue that status quo-wise, the Flash now and the Flash #0 aren't really that different except for the presence of Bart. Jay died and came back, Cold died and came back.. overall, everything's remained pretty static, despite some fantastic stories. So I figured it was time to shake things up! There's no doubt in my mind that the difference between before and after the story starting in Flash #30 is easily the most radical shift in the status quo the Flash has ever had on the site
Charlie: Fantastic. Who can we expect to see in the event then? You tease it's massive, but really, is it as massive as it could be?
Kevin: Simply put; Everyone. Barry, Iris, Bart, Max Mercury, Johnny Quick, Wally West, Jay Garrick, Joan, Barry's parents, the Top, the Trickster, Weather Wizard, Warden Wolfe, the Turtle, Eobard Thawne, Abra Kadabra, Gorilla Grodd, Murmur, Double Down, Girder.... and that's just issue one! That big enough for you?
Charlie: So, if this is as big as you say it is, Kevin, what's the world going to be like when this event finishes? Who will be left standing? You're probably not going to answer that question, but it's worth a shot!
Kevin: What the world's going to be like when the event finishes... that's an interesting question. In a lot of ways, this event is intensely personal for Barry and for his family. Keystone and Central City will be very different places. There will be loss within the Flash family itself - that I can promise you, and the views of the survivors will not be what they were. There's not much I can say for fear of spoilers, but with regard to people being left standing, I'll just repeat the familiar line I'm using to promote this event - Speedsters will live. Speedsters will DIE. And Nothing will ever be the same again.
Charlie: Well... You'll still be writer, right?
Kevin: Well, okay, fine, one thing will be the same. You keep this nitpicking up though and maybe the editor will never be the same again!
Charlie: Touche! I have to say, every time I receive a new issue of this book, I get excited. You've been writing us a wild ride, and with your high hopes for this arc can come nothing but a high quality storyline that, as you say, will be the biggest Flash event on the site ever. Do you want to say anything else before we part ways?
Kevin: It's been really fun on the Flash thus far with some great feedback and some phenomenal covers, and I hope we get some new readers with this issue and that everyone enjoys the story! Hopefully we'll do better than the real DC with the character these days!
Charlie: And while "Legacy of the Lightning" kicks off with The Flash #30 next month, you can catch the prelude this very week in issue #29 - "The Once and Future Flash"!
