My Word has a way of freezing up on me at random moments. Okay... not random. It's when I've typed more than 3 pages without hitting save once. When I've just typed the perfect phrasing. When I've...
Whatever. These days, I'm saving after every paragraph and hoping we get a new puter soon.

Sorry to hear that, John.
Whenever I start a new script, I have learned very quickly that I should type a word or two and then save. If it crashes, I can recover it, if it doesn't, I'm fine. But it pays to do this as early as possible in any given document to avoid....consequences.

Control+S! Control+S! (Save) I do this so habitually that my fingers do the control+S dance automatically even when I'm trying to write an e-mail.

I too feel your pain. Not with writing but with my artwork. I learned real quick to save and save often. Nothing hurts more then putting in 8 hours getting a pic just right and have your computer just freeze up or shut down completely.

The problem is simple. Computers hate writers. We use them abuse them and crate works of wonder but give the ones who did all the work no credit. Next time your story is posted make sure whoever is posting it writes: Written by: (author) and his/her computer And the entire world will be filled with techno-sapien harmony. Thankyou, goodnight.

So I got my laptop back today from Compaq but they didn't fix the problem. Apparently the problem is something that would cost more then the computer is worth. So now I have a dead laptop and need to get a data transfer from the hard drive which is going to cost $150, plus the cost of a new laptop. Not a happy time let me tell you.

We bought a new computer last year because we were sick of dumping money (and buying data retrievals) for the old one. Now I flash-drive everything in the computer once a month or so, just so I have SOMETHING in case this one goes kablooey. (but it won't...because it's a good computer...goooood computer...*pats hard-drive tower*) ;D

Now it's my turn to say AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGGGGGGGGH!!!!
This computer is still working, but not my own that it is connected to. You know, the one with my stories on it. Especially the Suicide Squad story that was really hitting a groove....
It is my hope to have this fixed soonest. Also in the meantime I have a new email address zavrian@gmail.com as yahoo is rebelling as well.
Hope to have this fixed by as early as monday. Yeah, I could use some luck like that.

Sorry to hear that, Jay! I can relate to finally hitting a groove and then losing everything (the long suffering Wonder Woman #33...).
And gmail? One of us. One of us.

Honestly? You guys should be using Google Docs or one of the other online word processors. That way, if the comp blows, you can get back to your work on any other machine that can go online. I quit using Word some time ago for local work. I now use AbiWord. Its just as good and stable. I've never had it crash.

Ooh, hope it gets repaired soon. And same here--almost. This is the first day since Saturday that the PC/printer have been working. First the printer went. Tried all kinds of things, finally went to reinstall the driver, and the PC messed up. Everything's back... for now. Got it in fiar running order just in time, though, since my MP3 player messed up and I had to get a backup copy of some of my new songs on it. It died right after. But at least I have the backup files.

OK, so we are back in town and I was laptop shopping at Best Buy yesterday. I found a couple of cool ones for under a thousand dollars but they all run on Windows Vista. My wife thinks that would be a bad way to go and wants me to get a Mac. They cost a lot more and I have never used anything other then Windows.
I am tired of not having a laptop and I really want the Geek Squad guys to transfer over my data from my old laptop to a new one so I can get back to writing and posting stories again.
Anyone have any opinions on Vista and or Macs?

I have a laptop with Vista... and I have had nothing but problems with it, John. If you can avoid Vista I would recommend it.

I use a Mac and I enjoy it a great deal, but it does take a great bit of geting adjusted too. That said, they are pricey, and servicing and maintaining them are trickier since you're stuck relying on the Apple people (which of course, isn't an issue in how excellent the service is). I recently had to get my logic board replaced, and it cost me 280 dollars for the repair, but they fixed EVERYTHING (replaced the disc drive which had broken a while back that I blew off fixing as too expensive at 300 dollars, cleaned and refurbished an all). So the expense is a factor, but if not an overrriding one, then there's little you can't do with the Mac and it's a quick, powerful little machine.
Windows Vista is not the horror show that people say it is. I have two friends who have bought new PC laptops that have Vista, and the key we've figured is this: a new machine ready to run vista, with new software to work with, has Vista working fine. Sarah loves her machine and has no issues with Vista. The problems with Vista (as we can see it) lies in trying to mesh with older machines and software.
I have always been a Mac person, and lean toward my machine sligthly, but having used both Sarah's (in recent months while mine was out of commission...and that was for money, keep in mind that when we brought the Mac in for repairs, it took just under a week to get the job done and back to me) and mine (for a couple of years now), I've been fine using both. This probably doesn't help much, I'm sure. LOL But good luck with the shopping.
Take care Don

Thanks for the insight guys. I am off to the Nuggets game tonight, so I might swing back by Best Buy either tomorrow or Monday and see what my options are. If anyone else has any suggestions or opinions I am open to ideas. I don't mind spending the money on a Mac but I am not too sure I would like the change after all these years.

My mom got a Vista laptop and it has been sent back at least two, I think three, times since we've had it because of various problems... it was a Christmas present from my uncle, and he had to send it back before he could give it to her. She tried it, it was messed up, sent it back, it was messed up.... once we got it working, we found it does take some getting used to. It has some neat features, such as the slideshow of pics in the upper right-hand corner, etc, but I can't recommend it.

Yep, had to happen, just 'cause it's never happened to me before.
Last week (Friday) my computer caught a virus and crashed hard core. Don't know who did it (I blame my wife- she blames me) or how it happened but we lost EVERYTHING.
Of COURSE we had nothing backed up.
Got our computer back and building back from scratch. We're going to buy flash drives tonight.
ARRRRRGGGHHHH! indeed.

I use to have to re format my computer once a year cuz of stupid viruses and so on. But now I use malwarebytes, spybot, and bitdefender. They do a real good job of keeping my baby safe. lol. And when all else fails I use good ol combofix. I ended up getting the big bad of last year cuz my firewall crashed for a couple seconds. Combofix saved the day. I highly suggest using them. Combo fix is a last ditch effort though cuz it can cause you to lose some stuff, but losing some stuff is better then losing everything.
