After talking to you guys for the last few months, you are starting to get me more interested in the DC side of things. I was wondering if all of you DC fanboys could recommend to me what you believe the BEST DC ongoing title is, or one that is about to come out you think will be amazing, and WHY. I am a sucker for excellent artwork. But when the story and artwork combine it makes a masterpiece. So have at it, and SELL me on a DC series. I will pick the one that is most referenced as being the best and add it to my comic pull list.

Well, if you are looking for one book that everyone agrees on...you might not find one. Everyone has different tastes so there might not be one singular book to choose from.
For myself I no longer collect titles like I use to. Right now the only books I have been catching up on are...
Manhunter GL Justice Society JLA Checkmate
Of course I am very interested in Final Crisis and possibly Trinity but not sure what else?
I can speak more to the DC past then the present or future, so I am curious what people will come up with here.

Manhunter is one of my favorites, too. Get the TPBs!New issues will come soon. Another awesome series is Blue Beetle (although you might not want to pick it up because of the art of Cully Hamner who is drawing very cartoony. But after Rafael Albuquerque took over this book is a must have IMO!!! It's the perfect series to come to DC. You're not involved into all the big crossovers, but you get to see a lot of other characters from the DCU who are introduced to you. I think that would be the perfect title for you ;D ) Green Lantern is very good Checkmate was very good (there's a new writer and artist coming, so I have no idea if the series will stay as good)

I would recommend Green Lantern. The writing has been being top notch since its relaunch with Rebirth. The current artist Ivan Reis is a great fit for the title and anything that has to do with space adventures. Jump it now has they are about to really introduce more of the 'other' Lantern Corps.
Green Lantern Corps is another one that always delivers on the art and story. Another book to collect as DC pushes toward summer of 2009's Blackest Night.
Teen Titans is consistent with delivering good stories and art too. I do miss Geoff Johns as the writer of the series but Sean McKeever did a great job with Titans of Tomorrow storyline.
Personally I recommend anything that is written by Geoff Johns.
Oh and for great artwork...All-Star Batman and Robin, Boy Wonder.

The opening of Bruce Timm's run on Detective Comics.
That, in my opinion, is definitive Batman.
And apart from the rocky ending, "Face the Face", by Robinson, Kramer and Kirk was one of the best OYL launches done.

Hmmmmm what book would be safe with Final Crisis, bearing down upoun us.
Not knowing how it's going to effect the "universe" it might be a bit jarring for a new reader to just get started then have the proverbial rug ripped out from under him.
Starting with Final Crisis could also leave a new reader dazed and confused, or send them running to the back issues or wikipedia to find out about a character that piqued their interest.
I know it's been said that you won't have to know all about DC universe to "get it" but come on how well would that last page have played to someone who didn't know what that was all about?
From what I've read, I would suggest Batman RIP as a good jumping on point. He is a well established character that even non comic people know a little about, enough so to make what I hear are great changes coming for the character an "Oh Crap" moment. Thereby "hooking" the new reader, into a new mythos for the character so they will feel invested in the story. Be interesting to see what you choose and read your thoughts.

hey Trev,
I gotta point you to:
Green Lantern. The last two issues have been a retelling of GL's history with Hal Jordan and GL is one of the greatest DC character's around.
I could also suggest Justice Society and Justice League. Those books have been really good since I have been collecting the last two years.
Manhunter is a really really good book. It's stories are engaging and take a lot of different chances that you wouldn't expect from a hero in that role. (Kate Spencer.)
Dini's run on Detective has been good.
Savage Run (which is about to wrap up) has been fun.
Just a lot of different titles I could suggest.
Checkmate is a fun title, but it's not one I read regularly.
Hope that helps.

I have to agree with Riz. Blue Beetle's awesome-- at least, Ted Kord is. Heh, a good one to pick up for it's 80 glorious pages is 'Countdown to Infinite Crisis'... Incidentally, it is the one I read when I fell in love with Blue Beetle ( I know, I know, guys... Ramon got me already... ) But seriously, it's a good one, Trev. Wonderful artwork and great writing. One of the best comics I've read.

my suggestion would be to invest in the first volume of Geoff Johns' run in JSA in the trades. This new series is very good, but his first series was really amazing! It's worth the money. I bought the singles and the trades. Only other comic I've ever done that with is Manhunter.

Okay I spent a solid hour going through every DC comic my comic store had in stock. I looked at the art for the titles everyone mentioned, and kept in mind everyone's suggestions for writing. I also went out on a limb and took a chance with one that wasn't mentioned by anyone! Here are the new DC titles I added to my monthly pull list: 1) Justice Society of America - I heard this title was solid and two people in the store were really excited about this title, especially the latest issue, so I thought it would be worthwhile to give it a run. 2) Checkmate - I actually found some of the drawn scenes (visual storytelling) in this issue intriguing so I thought I would give it a run. 3) Year One - Huntress (#1 of 6) - I thought this would help me learn more about the Huntress and what she is about. Since it is limited run, if it sucks, I am not out much, and I can replace it with another title once it is over. Hopefully I chose okay... I went with my gut from the feel I got from paging through the comics.

I could suggest JLA too. It's always solid.

JLA? I haven't liked it much in the last few years.

Meltzer's JLA was quite sucky but the current McDuffie JLA is indeed pretty good. I'd also recommend Simone's Wonder Woman to ANYONE, Diana fan or not (I'm not!) and of course Green Lantern remains one of the best comics at either company.

you read it recently, 'Kid? Recently, no. I lost interest with the Obsidian Age and the, what was it, JLA Classified-- Hell on Earth, Hell Breaks Loose, etc-- thing? They were sooooooooooooooo dumb!

The JLA is pretty awesome. The Lightning Saga was brilliant, and if you imagine Tornado's Path to take place in two issues instead of the what six? Then you'll be a happy little chappy. Dwayne Duffie is just a talent so anything he touches is brilliant. His FF was cool!

...I'll have to disagree with Charlie, because virtually nothing happened in "Tornado's Path" no matter how many issues we pretend it was, and I still have next to no idea what happened in "Lightning Saga". The problem with Meltzer is that he spends most of his time remnicising about how awesome the JLA are (were) instead of having them actually do... well, anything. Big, big breath of relief now that McDuffie's on the title- though he's been fighting editorially mandated crossovers thus far, that looks to be over.
