I was wondering something recently...I like to buy TPBs and read entire stories at once, and lately I've seen some good stories that I've missed out on before. But there's so many stories!
So the question is, what is your favorite comic story (or stories) ever, be it a maxi-series storyarc, a mini series, or even a one-shot?
So far, for me, I'd say that I've really enjoyed Alan Moore's stuff (Watchman, V for Vendetta), but that's a given.
Otherwise, I can't think of anything particular, but I've loved Marvels (by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross) for putting the humanity back into superheroes, and some of those future stories involving Alex Ross, like Kingdom Come and Earth X (written by Ross and Jim Krueger I think?).
Anyone else?

A Lonely Place of Dying. Batman/Titans crossover. Origin of Tim Drake. My first story ever as a serious collector, and it holds a special place for me.

A Death in the Family was a turning point for me. When the fans killed Jason Todd. Crisis of Infinite Earth is another one, the massive crossover that set the bench mark for company wide crossovers. Recently I think of the twelve issues of Teen Titans. Maybe I'll think of other stories later.

Every issue of Uncanny X-Men from #98 - #138. best run of any comic book, ever.
also the entire run of The New Teen Titans til nearly issue 100. But the Judas Contract was always my favorite.

The Wolfman/Perez New Teen Titans is excellent (three volumes now available in Archive Editions, plus "Judas Contract" and "Terror of Trigon" has been collected in a TPB), as well as the LSH epic "Great Darkness Saga" (also in a TPB).
As far as some good collected editions out there, I have to go with Charlie and say the Starman trades are top-notch. Other reccommendations:
The New Frontier Crisis on Infinite Earths Kingdom Come (Get the Absolute Editions if you can, the extras are well worth it!) JLA/Avengers (Busiek/Perez--- just to see Superman with Captain America's shield and Thor's Hammer, drawn by Perez and looking badass) Kevin Smith and Brad Meltzers Green Arrow runs (don't waste your time with Winick's subsequent "efforts") Ed Brubaker's reintroduction of Catwoman Any of Gail Simone's BoP trades or the forthcoming Secret Six trade GL: Rebirth is worth the price, as is Johns' run on the Flash Hawkman has been consistently excellent up to the recent Simonson issues (there are three trades that culminate Johns' run in a JSA crossover called Black Reign, which is quite good, but the Palmiotti and Gray stuff is good, too).
Oh, and Adam Strange Planet Heist was a great read, as well (and some nice art, to boot)!

all that david said... for starters. i LOVED planet heist, i so regret not buying that when i had the chance, i would just read it in barnes and noble on my down time from school. And even though i read the issues, i'm still gonna buy the secret six trade.
of course there is dark knight returns. the final scene with him and joker i got enlarged and is on the closest thing i have to a wall in my room.
i know its awfully long, but Bone was freaking amazing. I had got the one volume edition and so i was able to just read it through once and was blown away. not literally because i'm still here but you get the idea...
oh name of the game by will eisner was awesome. it chronicles a couple generations of these jewish families and it's pretty cool the way he shows time passing in that.
