It was reported on Newsarama on Saturday that the creator of Poison Elves has died at age 37.
I did not know Mr. Hayes personally but I felt like I did through his work. I found his title Poison Elves when signed on with Sirius back in the early 90's. When indie titles were all the rage Poison Elves kinda got lost in the shuffle but it was a superb title with attitude, memorable characters, and a wicked sense of humor. The protagonist was a sort of anti-heroic elf named Lusiphur, who kind of hacked and slashed his way across a fictional landscape.
I have had Poizenelf as my AOL screen name for over 13 years now and I proudly sport a Poison Elf tat on my right arm. And though the book stopped coming out regularly back in '04 due to Drews health issues, I never lost interest in his work and would often go back and read the series from the beginning again.
Along with Jeff Smith, Dave Sims, and Terry Moore Drew stood tall as the survivors and thriver's of the 90's indie scene.
Drew Hayes never took himself too seriously and his friendly feud with Brian Bendis was the stuff of lore back when Brian was still at Caliber. Drew wore his heart on his sleeve and often spoke of the ups and down in his personal life in editorials that appeared in every issue.
I remember when Bendis started to hit it big Drew stuck with Sirius who's' only other hit title had been Dawn. And when the big two went on a signing spree Drew Hayes made the boldest move of them all, he signed a lifetime contract with Sirius. The man was a bad ass with class all the way!
Though the series never got the attention it deserved in the mainstream (maybe thats what made it cool for us fans) but Hayes truly deserved to be recognized for his contributions to the industry as a whole. Maybe now with his untimely passing he might get the recognition he so deserved.
If you never heard of the man or never checked out the title before, give it a shot as all or most are in TPB.
Drew you will be missed. Peace.
