I thought of this because I have been having a bad work month +. It is summer @ the Home Depot and is my busiest time of the year. Long hours and no sleep is a summer ritual. It is an 8 minute drive to and from work and just long enough to play one song off the I-Pod. So I am curious, If you only can listen to one song, what would it be. Whats the song you hum all day long or when it comes on the radio you say "Cool beans!" It doesn't have to be your all-time fav just the coolest song of the moment.
Before today my choice was Jewel "Again and Again". Laugh it up if you want but that ladies voice just does something to me. Besides I am still a newlywed and I dig the occasional sappy love song. Today I heard the coolest song I have heard in a long time. After another 12 hour day I got in the car and popped on the radio to Gnarls Barkley "Crazy". Groovy song! It's kinda like Mo-Town with a twist! I can't say any more about it. You just have to hear it!
So, what's your song of the moment and why?

You just have to hear it! Great song! The first time I heard it, it actually reminded me a little of Terence Trent Darby. I'm listening to quite a bit of Rockabilly and Punk at the moment so my song would be "Search and Destroy" by Iggy Pop and the Stooges. Also stuck in my head at the moment is "Santa Monica (Watch The World Die)" by Everclear and "So Far Away" by Dire Straits.

Wow! What a diverse group of selections already! My wife wants to butt in on this after reading and said to put her down for: Celine Dion "I drove All night" or Erasure "In Your Arms" She is such a girl! But I love her anyway!

Your wife has good taste, John. I've been in a bit of a sentimental mood so I've been listening to a lot of seventies and eighties stuff. The Cure's Pictures of You and Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds are on my play list at the moment. Oh, and Pink Floyds The Wall.

Those are great songs Brian! I have been listening to Seven Mary Three in the car lately so I have Cumbersome and Waters Edge in my head. Honorable mentions got to The Doors Light my Fire and The entire double disc Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness Album by the Smashing Pumpkins.

I love Sublime. I went to a show a couple of years ago and saw the band with Sublime's old drummer , the Meat Puppet guitarist and Krist Noveselic from Nirvana a.k.a the band full of leftovers from great bands with drug addicts. They were really fun to watch and it was a small club so I was up close so it was pretty coll. The opening band was called Guardina Alien and they were a punk band with a lead banjo. It's way cooler than it sounds look them up if you like that sort of thing.

i dunno if anyone else watched it, but gnarls barkley performed at the mtv movie awards dressed as darth vader (the helmet was taken off at the beginning) and was backed up by a live band all dressed as storm troopers and rebels and there was a jedi and chewbaca on drums. it was awesome.

I just checked out that Gnarls Barkely video, and you can consider me a new convert. And that set at the MTV Awards with the Stormtroopers banging away on the guitars was just surreal. Max Rebo is somewhere eating his heart out!
On another note, I can't wait for the new Elvis Costello/ Allen Toussaint collaboration The River in Reverse .
But what's in my car CD player right now? I'm addicted to audio books, and right now I'm listening to The Gospel of Judas, about, well, the discovery of a Gnostic manuscript attributed to Judas Iscariot, which seems to rehabilitate his character. It's a fascinating archaelogical and etymological detective story, produced by National Geographic.

It sorta amazed me with the recent brouhaha over Judas maybe not being such a bad guy and perhaps being a cog in the Big Plan. I mean, didn't any of these people watch Jesus Christ Superstar for pete's sake? ;D
Not to get this thread off-track, but I was reminded of that. Okay, music!

Embarrassing Admission: I can sing every role in Jesus Christ Superstar, verbatim, by heart. And do, on occassion, in the shower. Not that it's fit for anyone to listen to... Also, Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell, the entire catalog of Billy Joel and the Beatles and most U2. Again, not that anyone would (or should) listen.

Wow, Idle! I thought I was the only one who could boast about knowing the whole score of JCS. In fact, two years ago, I actually had the honor of playing Pilate in our Community Theater production. The show itself was probably awful, but I had a blast finally getting to sing in a show that I loved growing up.
Beatles? Billy Joel? U2??? My respect for you just grew in leaps and bounds.
KSM, I've argued the whole Judas concept with my father for many years. I know this isn't the thread for it, but it's a theory/question that has always stuck with me.

The Beatles are (IMHO) the greatest band ever. BIlly Joel... can't get enough of him! And U2, with the exception of their latest CD and the tavesty that was the 'Pop' album, I love them dearly!

The Beatles being the best band ever is not a humble opinion it is a scientific fact proven by...eh scienctists or something close.

I disagree Chris, sure they were big for their time, and sure they've had a lasting effect on the musical landscape but they were just a four piece pop band, and if you look at the bands today, how many of those are they? And for all you people who like John Lennon's music, I'm afraid to say, the only reason Imagine is as popular as it is is because Lennon was murdered! Best band ever, in my opinion, is Led Zeppelin. You have so many bands back then who made an individual contribution to music, and Led Zeppelin defined the rock genre, just as The Beatles defined pop in the 60s. Sure, music has evolved since, but so many bands show that they were inspired by those greats. Anyway, wrong thread to say this, but your science is whack, Joe!

I like that mary magdeline song, "I don't know how to love him" it was redone by weezer but it was, "i dont know how to love her" and it rocks.
borize, i was jokin' man, you probably got that.
The beatles are pretty cool but the best band ever? have you ever heard of a little band called Starship? I mean come on people, thats magic.
also gnarls barkley sounds like CHARLES barkley and that is just kickass to the extreme.

Zep is great too... but the Beatles are scientifically proven to be the best! And I think Imagine would have been a classic regardless of the tragedy... unfortunately, that could never be officially proven . I find myself wondering what would have come out next had he survived. Would he have continued to be an innovator, or would he have just continued to write catchy pop tunes? Same goes for Zep... had Bonzo lived, would they have blazed the Heavy Metal trail, or continued to produce excellent hard blues-rock? I know for a fact that I'd rather had a geriatric rocking Zep over another 'Tall Cool One'. Unfortunately too many visionaries have been taken too soon. Kurt Cobain, Bradley from Sublime, that screechy dude from Blind Melon & the druggy dude from Mother Love Bone... others that I'm too tired to think of right now... Starship??? Man, 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now' & 'We Built This City' were freaking classic!!! They were like the... uh... Air Supply of the 80's! Oh, wait Air Supply never really went away did they? Damn... too bad.

I'd have to agree with Chris and Scott. The Beatles changed the face and sound of music forever. I doubt if there is anywhere in the free world that you could flip radio stations for ten minutes and not come across someone playing a Beatles hit. Almost everything they did became a hit. They were extremly innovative, constently changing sound and style. It's unfortunate that ego's, the press, and that darn Yoko got in the way). I'd also like to think that John would have gone on to write even more substantial work. He was my favorite out of the four. I wonder what his reaction to world events now would be, were he still with us. I think this country needs a few more tree hugging hippies! ;D
