With the release of the original Star Wars trilogy a mere month away, I'm debating whether I should get the fullscreen or widescreen versions of the film. There are obvious advantages to both:
Fullscreen -I don't own a single widescreen TV. -No black borders, so the picture fills the whole screen.
Widescreen -None of the picture gets chopped off(because it's the original theater version) -I may be kicking myself if I buy the fullscreen version and end up buying a widescreen TV, as everybody will look fat.
Just out of curiosity, what do you perfer?

I'd always go for widescreen - it's the way the film was intended by the makers to be seen.

Full Screen? Pan and scan is the devil's work!Widescreen is the only way to watch a movie on TV. I always laugh when people mention the black bars as a distraction. You mean the TV and everything around it is easy to block out but some black bars will ruin everything!

There's not really a spot for "indifferent" so I'm not voting. I honestly don't care. I still feel able to enjoy a movie whether it's presented in the full view or not and my DVDs are a mish-mash of full screen and wide screen formats. I think the only movies I've deliberated gotten in widescreen were the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions. More over I think it's silly that they are sold separately when the technology is in place to have both versions in a single package.

I chose widescreen, although my movies are a bit of both. My preferance is wide, though. Back when they started the widescreen format, though, it seems to me that the fullscreen versions would come out first, with the widescreen following a couple of months later. This way they could try and double their money. Now, however, they both come out at the same time, so I'm not sure why they can't just put it in the same package.

I'm with Brandon. I might make a "FULL SCREEN/WIDE SCREEN DVDS: I'M WITH BRANDON" banner. Hmm...

Yeah, I guess I'm gonna get the widescreen version.
I have yet to get the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD (I have the '97 Special Edition on VHS) and I can't wait to get these awsome collector's versions of the movies? Who else is planning on getting these?

Yeah, but this one is the one. It will include both the original and modified versions. It will be the Holy Grail in many DVD collections.

After this, there's no way that I'll have to buy another version of the Star Wars Trilogy until DVDs are ancient.

what about when they release all six together with the bonus discs and stuff like that in a shiney new package so that all the discs look the same? I just don't think we have seen the last of the star wars trilogy...

I go widescreen whenever possible, and I do have few DVDs that include both, though you don't find that very often.
Whether or not we'll buy the new Star Wars DVD is up to debate in our house -- more than likely we'll give in and keep both our old and new box sets...and that's it! If Lucas pulls this crap again, the only way I'll buy it is if it comes with a real working great-for-cutting-off-arms lightsaber!
I remember trying to explain widescreen to my grandma years ago: she thought the black bars meant they were cutting off the top and bottom of the picture! I told her, "No, it's the other way around, they cut off the sides on pan-and-scan!" but I still don't think she gets it.

Personally, it depends on the movie and the director. Typically, I prefer Widescreen, since that is how it was made, before it was modified to fit your television.

I usually buy wide-screen. It just gives the movie a more theatrical feeling to it.
