I just, for the sake of passing time, re-read GL 145 to 150, the storyline that concludes Nero's battle against Kyle (after which, he is saved by the Qwardians to return to the anti-matter universe) and Kyle, faced with a decision of erasing history (his getting the ring and getting the chance to stay a simple artist) or accepting his new power and moving onto something more. The things that happen here make me a bit mad because I see that it has been lost since then.
Kyle's Fear
If not mistaken, this particular issue addressed Kyle's place as a GL and his overcoming fear. Right after a talk with Spectre-Hal (Spectal?) the narration goes to say:
"Like the moment years ago when an alien immortal appeared before him and offered a new life, he is not a man who turns away from the unknown.
"He is not a man taken by fear. Or dishonesty. Or a man filled with rage.
"Before and after he accepted the ring, he was a hero."
This whole particular issue shows his strengths, and that particular quote shows his power over fear I suppose, for lack of a better phrase.
Kyle's accomplishments:
To not mention all he has done before these issues is a crime against the poor guy, but for now I'm looking just at these issues and those close to it.
Not too long before these issues Kyle is established as both an intergalatic and Earth hero, when he goes to space to try and solve a conflict. In his times as Ion, and his immeasurable power, he did so much at once that he had built up a nice reputation as a hero. If he had no coverage before this, he certainly did enough as Ion to make up for it, and since he did do something before this point, he was only building himself up higher with these acts.
He even stops war on the planet that was at conflict before (we get to see a nice little blue girl smile at him to show that he did it the right way, not a dictator way). He made even more of a reputation with this.
Now that Hal is back and the DC writers have reestablished a corps, aside from being the torchbearer, he has pretty much been given a small role up until his renewed status as Ion. In the Rebirth issues Kyle was made to be a rookie who still had fear, yet he'd been a GL for years in DC continuity and he had a lot of accomplishments under his belt. But, I'm sad to say since I love Hal just as much, to make Hal shine above the rest they had to downplay everyone else. Even in the GLC Recharge series Kyle's role was small even though he was the second main character.
Nero:
I don't remember if Nero has shown up since, but if he hasn't, he should be among Sinestro's Sinestro Corps since he carried the torch for Sinestro in a way. And fear was his thing right? Psycho that he was.
John:
Winick dedicated a whole issue (just about) to analyzing John's life and then ending the story with how great he is. John says himself that he's always been second fiddle, and it's gotten to him, which must have been Winick's way of addressing John's useless role so far.
What gets me mad is not his role so far to that point, but that he is still written inferior. The same way they made Hal so heroic and so much mroe supreme than the others in Rebirth they could do for the other lanterns. The same way Guy not only became funny again but has an importance and greatness should happen for the others as well.
John, in Recharge, Rebirth, and so far in IC, has continued to have the least talknig time between the earth lanterns I'd say, and usually someone is giving him orders or suggestions. It happens in each book, usually Hal saying "John do this!" or John saying something doubtful and Hal saying somethnig cliche and heroic to reassure John.
Kyle's dad:
Just wondering whether he has been mentioned or cameoed since being introduced.
And I think that's it for now. Please respond and give me your thoughts, whether you agree or think I'm ranting.
